In 2002 I moved to Vail to be a snowboard bum. It's an awesome life if your obsessed with the sport. I love Vail. So I started a family, wanting to give my kiddo the same fun life I had. But guess what...can't afford a kid if you're a ski bum, can't afford a kid if you work on the mountain, can't afford a ski pass if you don't work on the mountain, can't make time to snowboard if you don't work on the mountain...so now I'm just a stuck dad in an expensive town and we can't get on the mountain. Geezus that didn't work out.
Move to Alaska. Anchorage is 45 min drive above alyeska. The main resort. Season pass is about $1000-1500
Every year each Alaskan gets a check for about $1500 or so

I can almost guarantee the hotel/casino he stayed in on the Cali Nevada border was Boomtown! I've stayed there a couple times when they closed the road down cuz of snow. Truckee/Tahoe area is no joke they get an ungodly amount of snow up there.
