  • Royal Ballet Principal dancer Marianela Nuñez rehearses the role of Myrtha from Giselle with coach and former Company Director Monica Mason. Book now: www.roh.org.uk/tickets-and-ev...
Watch the full #WorldBalletDay stream at • Video
Giselle is the classic ballet of the Romantic era - and, for the dancer performing the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the repertory.
Peter Wright’s production, a classic itself, perfectly achieves the dual aspects of the ballet, moving from the naivety of young love between Giselle and Albrecht in the village setting of Act I to the ethereal Wilis in Act II’s eerie moonlit forest. Rich in vivid character detail and poignant depth of feeling, Giselle is a reminder of ballet’s power to move and thrill.

I'm in US in a city that will never see RB but while traveling in 2019 routed myself through London and really built my trip around having a chance to see Nela dance. I was hoping to get something where she really showed off her bravura technique. Got R&J and OMG could not believe the difference this consummate an artist made to the role of Juliet. Balcony was exquisite. I hope you get to see her live one day. See her in *anything* you can!

She's just such a blessing to the Royal Ballet and the ballet world as a whole.
She's so beautifully talented, but she's so open and receptive to anything that will keep pushing her to improve. She just drinks it in and is so respectful to those who came before.
It's hard to find a talent of this calibre who is also so humble.
We're lucky to have her over here.

There's a video of Lopatkina being coached by Makarova floating around YT. I made this exact comment and heard back from one of YT's ballet "influencers" that he'd seen Lopatkina that night after seeing the rehearsal video and that it was a little tense in the studio and Lopatkina had just done exactly what she wanted to do that night in performance and never mind about what Makarova had tried to suggest lols! Nela seems to truly have a beautiful work ethic and really does absorb and enact those corrections. Gotta say Monica's eye is incredible. I never would have seen there were changes to make, but she made Nela's Myrtha...just better.

i'm just gonna go off here for a sec. marianela is a completely gorgeous dancer. and i don't think people see how hard ballerinas actually work, yk? it takes SO much effort for just this part, and your entire mind has to be set on the moment. i think most people don't treat ballet as a true sport, and it kills me bc we burn just as many calories as one would when running, or working out at the gym, etc. and girls like marianela are working hours upon hours everyday to nail just a single part or technique. i commend all the ballerinas out there for pushing so hard 🥰

I agree with the hard work it requires to be a ballerina but as a dancer I wouldnt like it to be seen as a sport. There is a fundamental difference between using technique and phsyical capacity as a means to an end (to express emotions and thoughts), than for the technique to be the end itself. In sports you are rated in an objective way based on what you can do, in art you use you training in towards subjective expression.

ROH’s 2006 Giselle recording is the first time I’ve watched Nela dance. I still go back to that recording from time to time because I simply adore her portrayal of Myrtha so much. But now watching her interpret the same role 15 years later, I am even more amazed by how much she has grown and perfected her art from that already high caliber. Her tempo, interpretation of music and choreography, the way she carries her eyes…. Really shows how much thoughts she has put into the art of ballet!!

    • @minissa2009
      @minissa2009 Před 2 lety +1

Is that the one with Cojacaru and I think Kobborg? Yes, she was an amazing Myrtha even back then. Kind of wish they'd had her dance opposite Osipova in the ballet cinema production in around 2014. I've still never seen anyone other than Martine van Hamel get in *two* promenade/penchees in the first part of Myrtha's choreography, but Nela's single is exquisite. Her musicality is very similar to Martine's. I first encountered her in a fouette video, so I came for the technique but stayed because she is just such a consummate artist, at the top of her game and still taking corrections to improve. Gotta respect that. I think she's the best in the world.

I hope the RB will post extracts from the forthcoming production of Giselle.

There's an older vid of her as Myrtha with Cojacaru as Giselle that you might find with some creative searching of the internet. Even then, she was a brilliant Myrtha. She used some little tweaks you wouldn't notice unless you knew the ballet well and just totally made the character her own and clearly a role meant for a principal dancer.

I've watched Marianela through all the years of morning ballet classes and she truly deserved being a Principle. Love rewatching all these rehearsal's it highlights the hard work and dedication that dancer's put in.

Excellent as always Nela. I have always enjoyed your interpretation of Myrthe. It's so great to see you dance a role so different from your usual likeable heroines. I hope I get to see you and good luck with your shows. ❣🌟🤞🏽

When Monica Mason just repeats "wonderful, great..." and bearly corrects the dancer, it's because the dancer is pure technical and drammatical perfection. Just saying...

I practice promenade in arabesque into panche almost daily, and have my students do the same. None of us do it that beautifully (yet!), so nice to see it performed by a master of the art.
