  • A satellite image of what appears to be the U.S. military's prototype unmanned submarine is drawing attention. Dubbed the Manta Ray because of its shape, the image of an underwater drone at a California naval base gives viewers an idea of its sheer size.

No they aren't, you do not understand Naval Designations based off things like the way they Turn and the Sort, so those are Not Ships, certainly not, however they are Not Boats either, they are Canoes, and US Super Carriers are actually Rafts under strict Naval Definitions... You know at some point what's a Ship or a Boat is really dumb, because the way they classify them by the way they turn and the sort, can leave a small craft actually a Ship, and a Large Craft which everyone would think of as a Ship, actually a Boat, but to the Normal Person, the distinctions between the two are a Moot Point, because they just Don't Care, and they are Not Going to Memorize the Differences Between the Two than Appraise something between the Two just to speak because of Nit Picky People like you...

It still needs active propulsion for maneuvering in shallow waters, and doing things like staying in position for underway reloading. However it would do the gliding thing once away from shore which doesn't produce any more noise than that controlling the buoyancy tanks. The gliding is still mostly passive, and a free spinning prop isn't going to cause that much drag or extra noise.

I witnessed a triangle craft in the Florida straits with about 2 dozen people on a overnight drift boat fishing trip that very year.
2am that morning, it just lit up directly below us like a bomb, about 50 feet below the ship.
Everybody freaked out,ran to the sides to look down at it.
That ship was 60 feet long.
There were 3 white blue lights below us,one in front, one behind, and one off the side of us.
And a big dull red dome, circle in the center of it,slowly pulsing.
It was backlit too from under it so you could see the shape of it.
The point lights had to be, I'd guess, 200 feet apart under us.
Big black solid body of a triangle
We were like a toy boat in size to it.
When it lit up and I looked down, you could see it clear.
Every bit of fish below us scattering everywhere,it was that bright.
No sound,no pulsing feeling in the deck, just sitting there.
Then, it slowly started descending at a 45° degree angle.
We watched it desdend until the lights of it faded out in depth.
Captain got on the horn and told fishing trips over and throttled up out of there.
Some of us talked amongst ourselves about what the hell did we just see,but mostly everybody kept quiet.
That was the last time I went fishing offshore at night.
I don't know wtf we saw,but I know I saw something vast and powerful.

I find it surreal the way weapons of war for conflict with ourselves/fellow humans are spoken of so sweetly and flippantly. There is no difference between the news readers mood, they discuss weapons of destruction the same way they would discuss a new fashion line. It is sick. I wish I lived in a world where all the resources were not spent trying to destroy ourselves but instead for the benefit of us all.

this video is 20 year old tech, they now have twin turbo jet engine ones that go 48mph underwater and carry a 480kilio explosive payload and can travel up to 700 miles before striking an aircraft carrier and sinking it. they turn and dive and can avoid detection and attack by zig-zagging and rapid change of depth. they are capable of being programed to automatically attack a target tracked by satellite data ,radar data ,aircraft data or be guided manually from a low frequency radio connection up to 2000 miles away or encrypted internet connection from anywhere in the world remotely via onboard cameras.
the US has an estimated 5000 of them positioned on the west coast of the philippines and another 5000 on the north coast of the philippines and west coastal areas of japan. this has been their first real time deployment in a defense environment.
the US based ones are in alaska, hawaii, southern california and florida and virgina. they are currently working on an extended range model to 1300 miles of operational field.
