    Have had no probs yet with my xpresso4. Have ridden Time Equipe Magnesium for years so was very keen to ride Time again. Cleats do wear a little more quickly but got a full year out of them if you look after them (only $20 to replace).

    I was looking at those Time pedals ... and came to the same conclusion .. complimented.. from what I read in reviews. Went with the Ultegra pedals.

    I switched from Shimano pedals to Time about ten years ago. I've been running the Xpresso 4s specifically. The reason I switched is because I had an ankle injury that took out a lot of the strength in my right leg to twist it laterally. The Shimanos were very difficult for me to use but I read that the Times have the easiest disengagement. This helped me get back on the saddle after my injury. So yes, the float is weird, they are difficult to engage and the cleats where out quicker, but for me, it's probably my only option.

    Easy pedals to get into and super lightweight when you got to the higher end. However, over selling at least 30+ pairs of these, nearly half of them came back snapped on the rear end from Xpresso 2 to 8. My customers were having to replace cleats two to three times per riding season. Had I known they wore down so quickly I would have never stocked them in the first place and just stuck with Shimano/Speedplay for everything.

    Something few pay attention to, is that the Shimano, by angling the front and rear cleat engagement areas on an angle, seats the shoe bottom closer to the pedal spindle than most every other system. Look et al basically raise both back and front engagement points up from level, versus Shimano sort of using a triangular line, higher in back but low in the front, a difference of at least 5mm, usually more. They don't wear out, or break, easily adjust tension - little things add up. Cleats wear out, cheap to replace, repeat. Ride.

      Interesting - is this still true, and is the stack height number on the Shimanos over-reported?
      I used to ride bebops, and I think it was low stack height that helped my knee issues.
      The really old Time criteriums were my 2nd choice. I had tried the speeplay way back and they didn't work for me.
      Now that I'm getting back on my bike 1st time in 15 years, can't get bebops anymore, looking for the lowest stack height. It's either the TIME or the Shimano
      Also I'll be commuting and if I need to walk, the Times aren't ideal.

    Like RA Ive done all thr systems. Rode the Time Equipe Mags Ti's (super wide 🙏) then RSX's for a good while and weren't bad. Then Speedplay, the greasing and wear of the cleats irritated me soo much. I've never done these, tho user-experiences aren't hot toward them. After the Speedplay, i done Ultegra spd-sl's, the surface area is great but then went to Look blade 2's as the cleats are cheaper BUT i t lots of back plate wear - i felt the carbon blade on the bottom was too stiff (12nm) and wore it away and also they wore in the front cleat area of the pedal. Also a tiny stone got into the gap under the carbon blade, which was a pain to remove on the roadside. So've bought DA 9100 SPD-SL's which are pretty nice, entry bit crazy as the lip at the front is low so you can slide off the pedal. SPD-SL's cover all bases for me 👌

    • @JustRideAdelaide
      @JustRideAdelaide  Před 7 lety +2

      I always wanted to try Campagnolo and this bike popped up on Gumtree for a ridiculous price so I jumped on it. I really like it. I love the ergonomics and the shifting feel. Shimano is a much lighter action, this feels more mechanical. It's also really reliable. Once it's all aligned a basically don't touch it for months. The bad things are the expense and the annoying lack of compatibility. Like all things Italian there's a certain pain-in-the-ass factor but I still love it!

  • @mikaelliddy6475
    @mikaelliddy6475 Před 7 lety +1

    Used to run the i-clic pedals (pre-cursor to the X-presso), loved the ease of clipping in because the mechanism is "open" due to the blade rather than having to push the spring loaded mech open, don't think the cleats ever lasted more than 3-4 months though. Gets expensive at $45 a pop...

  • @bugwan1
    @bugwan1 Před 7 lety

    James, do you have an opinion of Speedplay vs Shimano pedals? I've been Shimano for 12 years and thinking it's time for a change - especially since the Speedplay clip in looks unmissable...is it worth toying with the competitor?
    Also, Speedplay cleat stack height has put me off a little...

    • @JustRideAdelaide
      @JustRideAdelaide  Před 7 lety +3

      I had a bad experience with Speedplays. They feel great when you're riding, and the clipping in is fantastic. Living with them was shit though. There's 2 micro-adjustment screws on each cleat to adjust float and both screws on one side never stayed screwed in so I ended every ride with maximum float on one side. Then I changed cleats to different shoes and one cleat stopped engaging properly. Not long after I pulled out of the pedal while climbing and crashed hard. So I'm not a fan of Speedplays now. I went crawling back to Shimano. If you're comfortable and happy with Shimano I'd stick with them. Maybe get some Dura Ace ones so they feel special again!

    I am using Xpresso 6's on my Guru, and Xpresso 4's on my Salsa Podio, and I am never going back to Shimano or Look pedals. I love the entry and overall feeling of these pedals. The only concern is that the cleats wear faster than comparable Shimano or Look pedals. Price for the weight, even compared to the likes of Dura-Ace is super nice. I'll also give Shimano a plus as well due to how the pedals hang so getting back going from a start is easier, but that's hardly a concern with how good these pedals feel. Plus, the 6 variant have quite a few colors that it made it easy to color match with my bike. Excellent pedals for the price and worth a look for a quality pedal, especially if you're looking to shed a tiny bit of weight without breaking the bank.

      Ride Adelaide - update on my Xpresso pedals. They aren't mine anymore. Of those two pedals, which I had two distinct shoes being used, and each bike that had the pedals on them of different models described above, BOTH of them began to experience the exact same fault. There appeared to be some very noticable and audible play in the pedal shaft and bearings. Because my pedals were out of warranty, Time USA wouldn't warranty them. They also did not opt to even attempt a repair. They instead offered me two options - 1, here's some new pedals at a discounted price for each ones sent in, or 2 - we send them back to you at no cost and with no repairs. I chose a third option, I found an old set of Look Keo Classics and put those on my trainer bike, and ordered some new Keo Blade Carbon CroMo pedals for my Guru. It's a shame really. I really like those pedals; they looked good, clipping in and out was light but secure, and they were super lightweight too.

    • @JustRideAdelaide
      @JustRideAdelaide  Před 5 lety +2

      I went back to Shimano after a few months. The main problem was cleat wear on the TIMEs . They lasted about 4 months before they were cooked. I hear they've made harder wearing cleats now though so if that's true then they'd be a great package. Still though, Shimano are just so damn easy to live with. THat's why I like them.

    I had both Time and Mavic's xpresso pedals. I find that the bearings are much better in Mavic's they is no play after a few hundred miles. There is a few points I dislike with both. The bearings aren't serviceable. The bearings actually suck to be honest. As it's a single bearing and bushing, that's it. They feel cheap in comparison to shimano' offering. In the winter in the UK the bearings seize up. But I love the level of float, its got to be kinder to your knees.

      The Xpresso 10's featured in this video are equipped in a ball and needle bearing, the second one is not serviceable. The biggest joke is that the pricier Xpresso 12's have a bushing (plastic) rather than a needle bearing.

    have a box of these crappy pedals. they never level out to the right position so ur always flipping it to clip in. tightening the spring tension will eventually destroy the screw. spring will fail and need to be reset by hand while out riding. pedal bodies may crack in half. bearings on models 7 to 12 use the same cheap plastic bearings. bearings will get crunchy and have play very soon.
