  • Everything you need to know about The Beatles' "Within You Without You." |
    Somewhere in 1967, George Harrison confessed to author Hunter Davies, "I don't personally enjoy being a Beatle anymore. I'm attempting to find answers to the more significant issues in life." At the same time, in the height of his disillusion with being a Beatle, he made the most un-Beatle-esque tune possible.
    🗣️ "Before then everything I’d known had been in the West," George said, "and so the trips to India had really opened me up. I believe much more in the religions of India than in anything I ever learned from Christianity. I was into the whole thing, the music, the culture, the smells…I’d been let out of the confines of the group, and it was difficult for me to come back into the sessions. In a way, it felt like going backwards. Everybody else thought that 'Sgt. Pepper' was a revolutionary record - but for me it was not as enjoyable… I was growing out of that kind of thing."

    Within You...Without You.......fantastic composition!!
    Surprisingly, the Sgt Pepper Lp (songs and art packaging) turned into THE major force in the evolving culture of that historical era!!

    I can remember really enjoying this song when I was seven and I started getting into the Beatles catalog without the influence of my parents I didn't appreciate what a tour de force record *Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band* was at that age, but I came to over time. "Within You Without You" played no small part in that appreciation for me. Add to it, George wrote it 1967, and we in the human race haven’t caught up to it nearly 60 years later. If George was still alive today and you asked him, he would probably say that there's more urgency to his lyrics now than there was then.
    The only thing I don't like about this song has nothing to do with the song itself. It's that George only wound up composing two released songs across 1967, the other one being "Blue Jay Way".

    George helped popularise World Music and Cultures, in this case highlighting Indian instruments like the sitar. Not only that, he raised the bar on spiritual conscience themes, philosophical enlightenment and the meaning of life. A timeless recording.

    Paul said this was like all on the Chord of C like "Tomorrow Never Knows" same with "Within You Without You". Poor Paul he must have worried how George Martin was going to take it because on other songs they had 3 chords and maybe a change for the middle-eight.

  • @paulnolan4971
    @paulnolan4971 Před 25 dny +1

    We were talking about the space between us all
    And the people who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion
    Never glimpse the truth
    Then it's far too late
    When they pass away
    We were talking about the love we all could share
    When we find it, to try our best to hold it there with our love
    With our love, we could save the world, if they only knew
    Try to realise it's all within yourself
    No one else can make you change
    And to see you're really only very small
    And life flows on within you and without you
    We were talking about the love that's gone so cold
    And the people who gain the world and lose their soul
    They don't know
    They can't see
    Are you one of them?
    When you've seen beyond yourself then you may find
    Peace of mind is waiting there
    And the time will come when you see we're all one
    And life flows on within you and without you

    "I'm Only sleeping" from "Revolver" matches well with the philosophy of " Within You , Without You", so I'm surprised John wasn't more of a fan.

  • @karaamundson3964
    @karaamundson3964 Před 27 dny +3

    George and Ringo didn't care for Pepper as they both felt like they were being treated like session musicians. Interestingly, John wasn't a fan of the record, either, as he felt rushed throughout the production and he didn't like most of Paul's songs.
    So this supposedly culturally shattering record may have been relying on the cover and a few tunes which actually *did* break the glass ceiling of rock culture..."Within You Without You" is certainly one.

    George was intellectually interested in Indian philosophy, but he certainly didn't live it. I think Within you and without you doesn't really fit with the concept of S.Pepper, S.P. is about this fictional band, then suddenly there's this Indian music , it sticks out like a sore thumb. I used to like it at first, then I always skipped over it, because it was too long and I wasn't that keen on it. Now I do wonder if they should have left it out? Instead, they could have put in Baby Your Rich Man and All You Need Is Love, that would have been a fantastic album!

    • @reddwood4971
      @reddwood4971 Před 13 dny +1

      To me that’s part of why it fits so well. Theres an almost circus variety show to me about Sgt Pepper and to me this is where some exotic magician comes and hypnotizes the audience. Maybe I just hear it that way coming out of Mr Kite. You get this very deep thoughtful mystical spell that is than broken by laughter and the lightness of when I’m 64.

    • @sandrafrancis3631

      @@reddwood4971 if you put it that way, it's convincing and makes sense, sort of? Wouldn't that fit better on Magical Mystery Tour? I still say it doesn't fit well on SPepper. Baby Your a rich man, and All You Need Is Love would have been better and a fantastic album.

  • @tooth2k

    By far the worst song on the album, almost ruining it. It was first on side two of the LP (kids…), so you could just skip over it easily to get to When I’m 64& the rest of the magnificent record. All revisionist history aside, the “reluctant Beatle” never measured up to the genius of Lennon&McCartney in terms of material. He was one hell of great guitarist/accompaniest though. Truly underrated in that regard.

    • @reddwood4971
      @reddwood4971 Před 13 dny

      Dude part of what made the Beatles so enjoyable to many is everyone has their favs and a different take on things. It’s fine to have an opinion but it’s not gospel. Personally I think George’s songs were almost always on par if not exceeding P&J. His first song on a record “Don’t Bother Me” is waaaay better than Love Me Do and is one of the highlights of WTB. From rubber soul onward his songs were consistently some of the best and don’t get me started on Abbey Road. For me the only record he comes up a bit short is “Help” but thats one of the lower tier Beatles albums for me anyway
