    I used to take my borzoi to compete against deerhounds, whippets and afghans on a greyhound circuit. The afghans were notorious for diving under the fence, cutting across and waiting for the lure to arrive on the other side of the circuit. They may be dunces in obedience training, but when it comes to the dynamics of hunting they're freakishly smart.

      Well technically the whippet played the game for fun and the afgan knows the course and knows he/she can't win with speed so it's useless to conserve speed. Had the whippet cheated as well then he would've lost too much speed. So really the whippet was smarter and/or faster by running the 'line' and overtaking from behind.

      Borzoi Coursing I agree, I've also read somewhere about this aspect of using afghans. Now the main focus concerns beauty and partly on dog racing cause in some (most?) countries in Europe hunting with dogs is banned. So beside being nice pets, they are not "useful"/working dogs as in countries of their origin. Btw: body structure/building of afghans (generally hunds) and cheetahs have many similarities.

    • @borzoicoursing4225
      @borzoicoursing4225 Před 7 lety +6

      Andy Reasoner A good bit true. This also applies so all "feathered breeds" such as Salukis and Borzois. When coursing, these breeds can't accurately be measured because they are largely owned because of beauty and not really trained and conditioned like the smooth breeds. However in Arabia for Salukis and Russia for Borzois, these two breeds can outrun anything except for the Greyhound. Russians admit that Greyhounds are faster. Afghan Hounds have made records as runners but even at home they're moreso fighters. But if you ever seen a top notch Afghan run they look like a flying carpet because their fur ruffle up and down alongside their bodies. Not a common sight though.

    For a short time, my wife & I had an afghan & retired greyhound. My wife's grandparents had about a 2 acre yard, in a very rural location,with only a couple of trees in it & had several cats. We were out there one afternoon & one of the cats ventured out of a shed, caught the eyes of both dogs & started to run. The afghan was the quickest to get started in a direction but quickly lost ground to the greyhound. The greyhound would run the cat "over" (literally watch the cat until it was under the dog), then the cat made a 180° turn & the afghan was on it immediately whilst the greyhound made this long sweeping turn only to repeat the action of overtaking the cat again. It was quite amusing to watch (only happened the 1 time) & to notice the physical differences between an afghan & a greyhound.

    In fact, that’s a sign of intelligence. The Afghan „knows“ that he won’t be successful by just chasing the whateveritis. So he goes for a different strategy, which might make him succeed more likely.
    I have a Canaan Dog, no comparison to a sighthound in speed. One of her best friends is a Saluki, who can outrun her, probably while being asleep.But my dog KNOWS about this fact, and will use it to her advantage: In playing with each other, she will direct the Saluki towards fences, which MY dog can easily dive under. And leave the Saluki frustrated in front of the fence.
    Every dog has different qualities. The Canaan will prevent a sheep from going astray, because it can see what’s going to happen, even before the sheep knows itself 😉
    Whippets were originally a cross of Geyhounds and Jack Russell Terriers. They will chase everything that moves, and they won’t give up, probably just for the fun of chasing behind something.
    We shouldn’t compare two dogs which obviously have different talents, and estimate one as being worse than the other. It’s like comparing figure skating girls with running athletes.
    In nature, only being successful counts, while hunting. There are no rules in how to hunt. Whoever doesn’t go home hungry, wins. 😉

    I've owned 6 Afghans in my life. They may be hard to obedience train, but they are unequaled when it comes to problem solving. This hound instinctively knows it can't run in a straight line with a whippet, no dog can, so it instinctively cuts the rabbit off at the pass. This is what hunters do. They anticipate where their prey is going and react to the situation. Marvelous animals to watch doing things their way.

      As in all runners, some are just faster than others. So one can't compare one breed in general based on one performance. Generally, Whippets can smoke the coursing field but they are also great sprinters. I had some fast Afghans & some not as fast, just like in Salukis too. Thanks for your comment!

      It usually takes only 6 to 7 seconds for a whippet for finish 100m. It is about 55mph.
      No doubt any dog who run at 40mph should be slower than whippet.

      @chrisricker4022 Před 10 lety +4

      billywongting 100m / 6 seconds is a bit slower than 17m/s. That would be 38 mph.

      +Lance C Well the Afghan Hound is certainly faster than a Whippet. it's just that Westerners are poorer trainers than the folks of the Afghan's home nation. Officially the Saluki/Afghan Hound are the fastest dogs in the Guinness Book of World Records but Whippets and Greyhounds are far more common breeds and therefore the worst and best of these breeds are more common. 1 Afghan could outrun 50 Whippets and lose to 50 others due to them being more common this probability is so. YET, the BEST running Afghan Hounds certainly exceed the Poor Man's Racehorse in open field coursing.

    Afghans are critical thinkers. But my god that Whippet was fast. What speed can they hit in the open chase like that? One good way to find out, put a small vest on it with a pocket, and download a GPS speedo app on your phone and slip it in the pocket.

      Lure coursing is not judged on who is the fastest. So weather the whippet was a faster runner than the afghan doesn't make any difference in the judging.

    I guess 40 miles must be for Whippets and not Afghan Hound.
