  • Mariazell has been on my bucket list for a long time. Finally, we made it. Mariazell lies at 2.822 ft, so it is a high elevation field. Therefore, performance and climb rate are less. Landing- and takeoff distances get considerably longer. Additionally, Mariazell is surrounded by high mountains and a mountain ridge even extends right into the traffic pattern.
We first overflew the field well above traffic pattern altitude to check it out. We looked for the windsock and tried to get a good picture of the surroundings. Overhead Gusswerk where the valley widens again we turned back. Then we descended to traffic pattern altitude for an entry on the right downwind leg for RWY 15. After a touch&go, we did one more pattern and a final landing. By touching down on speed and just beyond the displaced threshold, we managed to vacate the runway at the mid-point.

Amazing! My grandmother lives in one of the houses left of the bridge that you can make out at 1:14 between LOGM and the trees and it's been a dream of mine to learn to fly to go there on a trip :-)

I found your video because Mariazell is on my bucket list too, and we just might get a chance to fly in this Sunday. The weather should be beautiful and we hope to get a glimpse of Schneeberg too. Thank you for the approach video, it definitely gives us a better idea! (but I'll still fly it in the sim, just to be sure).

Sunday ... That's tomorrow. It will be warm tomorrow and LOGM is at a high elevation. So you will face an even higher density altitude. And there are mountains all around. That's why the pattern has a 'dent'. Just make sure to double-check all your performance calculations. Otherwise have fun! LOGM is one of my favorite airfields! Last time we were there, they offered us bikes for free and we could pedal to Erlaufsee (approx 20 minutes by bike) which was awesome.

@@FlyingRagilein I'm watching the weather develop, there are still TCUs along our route from LZDV, and the winds are rather strong, but Sunday should be calmer, cloudless, a window of opportunity. I would have preferred the RWY15 approach like you did, but winds appear to demand RWY33. We'll carry enough fuel to return if it does not look good. Thank you again for the video!

@@FlyingRagilein Well, everything went beautifly, the weather was a little bumpy and more clouds than I expected, but the airport is truly amazing and the approach for 33R was very nice and not too hard. Very nice people too!
