When he was found crying after a hunt Eugenes dad told him that instead of shooting doves maybe he should take pictures of them instead. From then on ornithology played a huge role in his life.

"That's the wrong girl you should be looking at!" No, that's the right one. The one who didn't condemn him to death and tell him to kick rocks.

As much as I want to recommend Generation Kill, Generation War has one character who is a nurse, and no one has reacted to Generation War yet.

The Pacific is such a great companion piece to Band of Brothers, together they form such a full picture of what war does to people. If someone asked me to sum up the themes of the two shows, I would say that Band of Brothers is about how war makes people, and The Pacific is about how war breaks people

Fun fact the army officer Leckie spoke to is the voice actor for everyone's favorite Turian Garrus Vakarian from mass effect lol

Definitely read Sledge’s book “With the Old Breed.” In my opinion, it is the single best book I have ever read about World War 2.

There’s a part when Leckie and Vera are having dinner and she tells him you must’ve been through a lot. In a moment Leckie looks away like he doesn’t want her to see him break down. She grabs his hand and changes the subject like she pulled him out of the darkness

Please accept what I am about to say as a pure compliment, I am old enough to be your grandfather. You are fortunate to be beautiful no matter what you wear or do. Real beauty comes from within. I hope your heart, the ultimate source of your beauty, never hardens or becomes jaded. God Bless you. bring you happiness and always keep you safe. May you continue to bless the lives of those you touch.

I can’t recommend Eugene’s book “With the Old Breed” enough! I have read it three times already. It’s a harrowing reminder of the costs of war. If you look up Eugene’s later life, he became a serious advocate against the use of military force and has spoken in lectures of the costs of war. It’s a reminder to me to always question the reasons for going to war. Take a look at his book, you won’t be disappointed.

I’d recommend watching unbroken as it is an underrated movie, but I don’t care if you react to it. It’s just a movie everyone should see

I think Snafu didn't want to wake him up and say goodbye because he seemed to have a moment of peace after all the sleep deprivation, nightly japanese attacks, bombings and nightmares. Another reason could be that Snafu wanted to finally put it all behind him and doing that, wouldn't even say goodbye to Sledge. That's how he seemed to cope also going forward as he didn't even talk to his fellow marines for 35 years.

the fathers knew what will await his son when he first comes home...he warned him, you americans can be glad you had this great generation fighting for you and the world

The scene at the college interview is straight out of Sledge’s book. The peacetime transition public was seemingly forgetting that it took fighting men to win the war. Sledge simply reminded her.

I was born and raised in Mobile Alabama, There are a number of streets and places named after Sledghammer and Syd Phillips. My mom even got the pleasure of meeting Syd. I currently attend the college, Auburn University (formerly known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute) that Sledge attended and there are traces of him everywhere. Auburn AND Mobile are wonderful little towns. You should check them out on google street view if youre ever bored. I loved watching your reactions to this series and Band of Brothers, much love, and War Eagle

btw little fun fact the family of original Sledge was so touched and proud about the actor and how he portrayed him, they actually gave him as gift the original Eugene's pipe he had in the war and came home with ... and the actor still has it

Dearest Centane, thank you for being curious about the horrors of war and those who fought. Yes, both of these series are outstanding in all respects you outlined - casting, acting, production, etc. I am so glad that the producers decided to create this body of work and giving it the justice it deserves. I concur with others’ recommendation for Generation War and Unknown Soldier. Thank you for this Centane - you’ve given me a reason to feel today.

There is a PBS documentary series called "The War" by Ken Burnes. It features Tom Hanks as the narrator and actually follows Eugene Sledge abit. I think you would really like it, it is packed full of information.
