In this video I’m showcasing my Bear Montana Longbow.
The Fred Bear Montana is a 64" slightly reflexed design with tapered limbs and slim tips to be smooth, stable and fast. Classic lines, maple lams and black glass are brought together with attention to detail creating an elegant blend of beauty performance, and tradition. Perfect match for those just getting into shooting the longbow due to its lower cost, but still packs a punch and is smooth shooting.
Riser: Radiused, cut-on center shelf. Solid piece of black Dymondwood®. Leather grip and arrow rest included. Inlaid Bear medallion.
Limbs: Clear white Maple core surrounded by black fiberglass. Reinforced bow tips can handle high performance string materials.
String: D97 Flemish twist bow string. Manufacturer recommended brace height: 7½" - 8½". Replacement string length of 61" recommended.

Traditional Archery How To Get Started

Great video! My OMP Sierra gets here in rwo days and I can't wait! I'm new to archery and I'm like you, a straight tradionalist. My favorite guns are revolvers and simplicity just brings me peace. Figured a piece of wood and a string has been working for 5000 years, so it's good enough for me. Thanks again for the video and I'll check out some of your other vids if they're on longbows.
Another really fun review. Thanks much. Beautiful bow!
Great review. Thanks for putting it together man!
Thanks my friend.
Great vid gettin ready to buy my self and my son a couple long bows I currently shoot a compound but ready to shoot something like that thanks wingman
There is something about shooting a bow that had a history of thousands of years. Thanks for watching and have fun shooting with your son.
Loved watching this! Great skill and training. Looks like a blast too.
Thank you.
I'm catching up on some of your videos, and I am impressed and happy to hear your attitude about traditional archery. I also tend to get carried away when talking about how much fun archery is and the mental and physical benefits that go with it. Keep up the good work, Shoot straight.
Thank you.
By chance is your quiver green, if so we will be matching cause I couldn't tell. The had five color options, it was a black vs green and I went with green to get less silver color. Lol.
Love your attitude with shooting the bow. "out here having fun" sometimes thats all its about.
I was the same, went from compound to traditional but... I shot the compound instinctively and right now I'm trying out some of the modern sights. Talk about a learning curve. LOL
Keep up the great content!
Far-Nor-Cal here.
+pinkiewerewolf Thanks so much for stopping by and watching my video.
Hi can anyone please tell me the width of the limbs at the handle. Looking at this video my guess is 1". If you have a Montana can you please measure it and comment. Thanks Mike
Awesome bow and great video!
Thanks for checking in.
Just got one as well in 50# lb, afraid I won't be able to handle it, or maybe it's my technique. Will try to practice more and see... I'm pretty strong, dough... 205 lb build well. Excited !!
sure is a pretty bow, I recently got back into archery from my boy scout days. the sammick sage has been an absolute delight to use.
+cori camp It's a great bow.
What kind of material is your bow string
I started with a Bear Whitetail Hunter compound bow as well, when I was about the same age as you at the time... Ha... But I always knew my true calling was in traditional archery! We'll have to link up and do some shooting one of these days. Till then, keep making great videos.
+Jaime Leon de la Parra Let's do it. Maybe some stump shooting in Laguna.
thank u for this nice presentation man / regards from Bavaria, Germany
Nicely done!
Thank you Bob.
I totally enjoy your videos. Now a subscriber. 👍
Much appreciated thank you.
I'm really enjoying your archery videos bro. I looked up some bows on sportsmans wear house and there's a samick sage for about $130 or $140. I've been saving so I think I might get that or the hoffner hand hawk that MrLeonidas designed when it finally comes out. I've done some practice with an old bear compound that my friend gave me but I really want to get into recurve. There's just something about the traditional style. Thanks for sharing!
NATEaBERGER Your welcome Nate. Now get out and shoot that bow.
Great video!
Thanks for stopping by.
Jonathan, thanks for the good video. Did miss it? What weight is your bow? I am looking at the Montana and at 65, I am starting to think I should go with a 40 or 45lb bow, but I do hunt (mostly whitetail) and have been using a Matthews FX ~60lbs for a long time. I started out with a 45lb Bear Black Bear bow many years go. Any additional advice?
40 to 45 would probably be perfect weight imo
Enjoyed your shooting and review. I shoot a Au Sable with a bow quiver for stability.
I need to get on for the Montana. Thanks for watching.
+Wingman115 John just curious, why three under rather then split finger? Preference? Or is there an advantage? I've heard it throws off your aim for longer shots.
+strong like monkey I used to shoot split finger for almost 30 years! Then I started shooting 3 under to get the arrow closer to my eye and found I shoot a lot better. My advice is do what's comfortable and best for you that works.
Thanks for your input John! I will try them both. I'm just getting back into archery and noticed the different styles.
this bow looks good. wondering what poundage i should consider? guess I need to shoot one. I shoot about 62-66 compound
45-50 is good for most people. I bought one used for $200 (good price) but its a little heavy at 60lbs, wish is was 50 or 55
what's your draw length? I just got this bow, and when I was at the range one of my fellow members commented that the bow is way too short for my size (I'm about 6 ft 5, 30 inch draw).
I'm not concerned with it looking small, but is there any risk to me damaging the limbs due to overdraw?
I would contact bear customer service and ask them.. They should be able to help answer that question.
Brent Mifsud no i have a 30 DL as well no stacking.
I had a question, would using this particular longbow necessitate canting it to see your target and sight in your shot?
It may it depends on your sight picture. I cant the Montana just a bit so I get a full view with both eyes on the target.
Ok yes, that confirms what I thought I was observing in watching you shoot here.
Red video man. It looks like you've nailed all the arrow variables to get an extremely straight flight on your shots. How did you calculate that? My arrows tend to drop down on the fletching side, while the tip does spirals. Pretty frustrating
You have to play with arrow length and tip and insert weight. Each bow will be different depending on how the shelf is cut. Start with full length arrows and cut a 1/8 to a 1/4 inch at a time until you get the right arrow flight for your shooting style and setup.
Great advice-do it. I enjoy traditional shooting. Bear Montana rh 45 lb.
Thanks for the video! Do you have a favorite pro shop in SoCal that you would recommend?
Bow N Arrow shop in Lakeside. Bruce rocks.
Great content 👍 All Archers should need to have the same attitude as yours👍👍👍 oh, to find your arrows try using a metal detector . Weather metal Shafted, or even if only the tip is metal you can find them!!! Keep on letting the fly !!!
Got a 55# love it.!
👍🏻👊🏻
Nice bow,i need to get one to practice. But man you are pretty good at shooting
I need to get better at over 25 yards. We keep shooting and having fun.
but how does the string improve performance you didn't say or I missed it
Better material and better made. Make for a smoother shooting bow.
Beauty.
+John Grytbakk Thank you for watching.
What kind of arrow would you recommend for a 45lb version of this bow?
There are a lot of variables like how long you need the arrows, how far you draw the bow, and whether you want carbon, aluminum or wood. If you honestly don't know, than you should call up one of the big archery shops like 3 Rivers or Lancaster and they can walk you through it and recommend the best arrows for you. You'll need feather fletching for shooting off the shelf and you'll want to stay away from the super light arrows the compound guys use.
Remember you want 5grains per pound. However if you talk to 3rivers archery the can hook you up.
Good shooting thumbs up ☺
+Noel Conroy Thank for watching.
Great looking old school bow lots of fun with a Fun Challenge! What mic you using Jon?
+guns4funcajanajustin Rode video mic. It's a wireless wifi mic.
Thanks Jon!
I think the Bear Montana is a bow that punches above its price tag. Brace height seems a little high but it seems to be shooting pretty good though.
Sweet longbow! I'm planning to purchase a bear super grizzly soon but for now I'm enjoying my 50llb sage. My dad also has a few bows I get to play with (old bear stag hunter 45 lb, bear super Kodak 55 lb, old Hoyt ram reflex hunter 60lb). I too started with compound I've got a pretty nice bowtech and every time I pick it up it feels so unnatural compared to a trad bow.
Got to love the Trad Life.. Thanks for stopping by.
Got a super as well awsome bow
Nice bow, it's a lot like my '50's Bear Polar.
+AlaskanFrontier1 👍🏻👊🏻
what string do you use.another thing do you make your own wood arrows
Simply Traditional made the string. I’m shooting Gold Tip carbon arrows.
Good video , I bought a Bear Montana 40# @ 28" 11/2 years ago and I love the bow. I've been into trad for about 2 years now and just enjoy shooting my longbow more than my compound, hopefully this coming deer season I'll have an opportunity at one. Anyway I have a 31" draw length so I had the bow scaled and it stacked to 52 #s , but it is a smooth drawing bow , just have to keep practicing to keep good form .Keep making those vids !
That's a long draw. Glad it's shooting good for you.
Nice bow! Maybe the Bear Montana will be my 2nd bow in a year or so.
Try the Martin Savannah, you'll really like it.
nice :) what's the price range ? and the poundage your using ?
#50 pound and retails for about 375.00
hey man where how do you get feather Fletched arrows like that
+Gabriel Roldan EBay. I had a fellow make them for me.
Gabriel Roldan 3 rivers archery has a good selection of feather fletched arrows. I'd recommend getting a fletching jig and doing it yourself though (it's not hard) you will undoubtedly end up shooting feathers off your arrows and that will enable you to re fletch them
Is Bear making a hybrid bow?Carbon fiber?
Not that I’m aware of.
I put a bearpaw whisper string on my 50# montana and man is it fast. Smooth too.
Good stuff.
DAMN WHATS YOUR BRACE HEIGHT??? I use FAST FLIGHT Flemish with a 7 1/2 “ brace height just saying !
Brace for the Montana is 7.5 to 8.5. I run a 8 inch for my draw length works really well for me.
What was the exact bow string you bought?? I’m gonna order one
I ordered it from the Simply Traditional website.
Good Video, Nice bow. I have the AuSable but it's a 45# and that's a little stiff for me. I'm older and have bad shoulders... so next year maybe I'll snag a #40 model.
The AuSable is a great bow. If you ever want to barter some items for it send me a private message.
William R look into bamboo it is so much smoother than maple. Even in the same poundage. But bamboo has a snappier sound on release.
How does the Bear montana compare to the Old mountain mesa?
Two different handles. The Montana is a traditional longbow design the Mesa is a hybrid design. If your used to shooting recurve bows the Mesa will be a easy transition. The Montana is more of a Howard Hill style grip.
@@Wingman115 if you had to choose. Shrew or Striker longbow???
WHERE IN SOUTHERN CAL ARE YOU? my FAMILY IS IN Murrietta..You do a fantastic job in your videos..
South San Diego.
Great video! What arrows were you shooting?
Gold Tip Traditional 500 spine.
Why did You change the string? BOW looks very nice.
The stock string is bad on these bows. I upgraded the string and that Montana is a sweet smooth shooter with it.
Wingman115 my string sucked too.
I always enjoyed the Montana EXCEPT the grip shape. It was like they made a straight grip and then said “oooppps” and quickly put a pocket and called it a locator lol😂
A rasp and sandpaper and I like it
Friend had this bow and he said the string would pop off the bow. Also read a couple reviews that said the same thing.
Most of the time folks don’t properly string their bow.
Dude... the resemblance to Danny McBride is kind of unreal. Thx for the bow review, it's the one I have had my eye on for learning
I wish I had his money...LOL
@@Wingman115 Just save up and wait for the right time to buy
Get you a cheap metal detector to take with you to places like that and the recovered arrows will pay for the metal detector in no time
Great bow if you like hand shock.
Neil Kraft no issue with mine. Check the brace and weight of your arrows. Sometime a to light of a arrow will cause that.
I Made It, first comment!!!!
Chris we need to get you a bow! Your missing all the fun.
It's on the list, I'm thinking by December, I'll meet up and we can hit the archery shop and select a rig. The area is looking nice now, I'm hoping we can get Hoss and a few other guys up to the camp spot and do some filming soon. I didn't drive down far enough to see if the ruts are deep for the mud, but I recognized this spot your shooting. Great little rest area, I need to hike some more and see what else we can scout out for knife tests, camp talk and relaxation.
Also forgot I need to update the drone for your next adventure, I'm so curious to see the treeline and scenic spots
BlackRifle Survival 🏹🏹🏹🏹🏹
BlackRifle Survival We need to break that bad boy out.
you use the word "mileage" several times in this video. not everyone understands what you are referring to with this word used how you are using it.....namely me for one.....
+Todd Bushcrafter Oh well can't please everyone. Thanks for watching.
what's with the gay looking pom poms on the bow!?
LOL string silencers dampens string vibrations. Makes for a quite shooting bow.
+Wingman115 ahhhh, thanks for the clarification, keep the vids coming!.
Hayden Phoenix
Thanks Hayden I will.
Hayden Phoenix string silencers.
