I had a music teacher that taught that a fiddle was just a violin you can spill beer on

    • @danielcraft3727

More accurate would be spilling whiskey. A couple shots of whiskey turns a violin into a fiddle.

@@banjoboy1337 you may know the banjo brought over from Africa made out of gourds. A strang is a strang ABCDEFG. Roots of southern music primarily Scot Irish Fiddlers and African Banjo. Hymns and spirituals roots of Rock N Roll. People have been banging rocks and sticks together singing in harmony for thousands of years and put the rock in the roll. Otis Taylor I think the name of the black banjo player put out Bringing back the Banjo I think the name was. Worth a listen.

The only differences are the way they’re played, and the way the bridge is set up. Fiddles have flatter bridges so it’s easier to play double stops.

Fiddle is simply the Anglosajón way of calling the violin. There is no major difference, they are the same instrument. If it is true that this term is used more in the traditional music of those countries, such as Scottish, Irish, or old time music.

The fiddle or violin are objects. They do not become something else when the are or are not being played. While they are being played they are identical. The difference is in the playing not the object. The fiddle and violin are just different names for the same thing.

  • @robertbolding4182

Well obviously they don't know the difference but there is a subtle difference which I will now explain both the violin and the fiddle are the same instrument however they are totally set up differently meaning the distance between the string and the bridge the shape of the bridge the shape of the fingerboard the distance between the string and the nut and the strings are entirely different. I have made seven so I know a thin
g or two. Not from a kit from scratch. It's much easier to convert a violin to a fiddle than it is to convert a fiddle into a violin you can't put wood back on an instrument that has been sanded or carved away that's why set up is everything.

The difference isn't the instrument: a fiddle is still a violin.
The difference is the style of playing and the bridge.
A regular violin is meant for Western Classical music, jazz, and some other cases, but a fiddle is meant for country and folk music where you have a lot more string crossing, more ornaments, some other articulation stuff. Because of that, a violin that's meant for fiddling has a slightly different bridge. Technically the same bridge but the difference is the curvature of the bridge, it's a tad smaller so playing multiple strings is easier.
This isn't to say that you can't use a regular violin for fiddle-playing but the bridge isn't really made for it.

Most people say the playing style is the difference between a fiddle and violin but I'd also argue that there are more aspects.
For example, I come from Finland and our fiddle music (atleast in the Central Ostrobothnia region) is very much based on the Swedish style of fiddling, which in of itself has alot of baroque ornaments. So some playing techniques may be completely identical to classical violinists but I think the main difference is that ornaments are improvised and personally embellished as the music is usually learned by ear rather than sheet music. So I'd say that fiddling is more about playing more freely and personally, as there is no exact right way to do things.

Old Time Fiddlers used to flatten the bridge. I happened to visit George Washington Carver's museum near Joplin Missouri, Fiddle country!. There was a "violin" there with samples of music Mr. Carver played. I noticed the fiddle had been refurbished, and mentioned that to teh docent. She was impressed, I was the only person to catch that. So she brought out the original pieces that had been replaced....and low and behold there was a flat bridge. Mr. Carver had acquired the instrument from his Uncle....who was a well known fiddler in the area!
And western fiddlers put a Rattlesnake rattle in their fiddle....I have one in mine. I learned that from Cliff and old fiddler who taught me.
