top tip with those non-permanent pens, if the writing is left on the clapper for too long and won't rub off, simply write over the text again with the same pen and then wipe off. Comes off straight away and there's no need for cleaning wipes or detergents etc. Handy to know in a pinch.
A great tool I never see mentioned, but I always carry with my 1st AC bag, is a *multimeter.*
Seriously, I use it to all kinds of stuff. Like checking the charge of small batteries, and distinguishing 12V from 24V batteries, now that cameras like the Alexa LF require different more powerful but still V-lock batteries and you don't want to mix them up. (I also work at a rental house, so I see a ton of similar looking batteries every day)
Also, some D-tap powered accessories could get damaged during a shoot from another crew, and get "repaired" by someone that doesn't know what they are doing.
So I always check for the polarity regardless of the shape of the D connector.
Ah yes. Very true. I haven't ever really seen an AC with a multimeter but we had one in rentals to check things over, especially dtap polarity! But carrying one in a kit is a great plan. Thanks for your comment!

Super nice of you to make this for aspiring assistants! Did someone mention to never ever point a laser towards a camera. Harmless as it looks, the lens is totally magnifing that. You dont want to be that person havving to explain this....
Nearly had a heart attack when she pointed the laser at the camera. Phenomenal way to wreck a digital camera sensor. Not sure about that type of laser, but still... Super informative, thanks!

Allen wrenches, called hex wrenches, both metric and imperial, are usually on a handy hex key set, sort of like a pocket knife. They stay together and flip out the individual one when you need it.
i started on Amazon looking for a slate to use on a project. Found lots of china made garbage for $20. Then I remembered this vid. Rewatched it, followed link to filmtools, now I know where to find better quality gear. Thx Felicia :)

When I started freelance camera assisting over 40 years ago, pretty high up the list of things in my bag were the cameraman's favourite cigarettes. How things change.

As of this moment I made a very interesting discovery: coming from Andrew Lock lightning channel, luckily being pointed to your channel I recognised you are both from Australia. Working myself with Rode mics and Black Magic cams; they too come from Australia. Having check on Andrews recommandation of ThoughBuild working gear I found them very great; again Australia. I mean, Mad Max. Australia. "The Red Paintings". Australia. Jim Thriwell (originally). Australia.

I'd add a set of micro-screwdrivers, some hand towels and a set of utensils for those days when you're on set late and they bring in food, but forget to get forks to eat it with, which has happened more than a few times for me.

First! Haha. Great stuff Flick! Some of the things you mentioned can definitely be handy to have in your kit if you're a DoP as well. I've got to get one of those camera covers for any of those quick changes in weather.

Hey I have a question the 35mm cores what is holding it together

I like this a lot! I think those film cores are actually 35mm (unless Felicia is a very small person) ... I guess nobody shoots film any more? I've never been an AC but this is very instructive.
They are actually 16! I was a bit silly and said the wrong thing accidentally though. I actually tape two together to make one wider core. You can use 35 as well. Glad you liked the video! 😊👍
can someone tell me what pliers would be used for and how regularly please?

You could really go on forever putting together an AC bag. A sensor cleaning kit / led loupe magnifier would essentially save the day if you were to get a speck of dust or dirt on the sensor and need to clean the sensor on location (I only would recommend this for people who really know what they are doing or have worked in a camera rental house as a technician).

Maybe I totally glossed over it in the description, but could you give me that link to the cloth measuring tape you mentioned at 12:15?? Thank you, and fantastic video!
I did link it there but I just clicked it now and it brings up a 404 error. Looks like they don't sell them anymore but I used to have one from Bright Tangerine that had a leather casing. Really you're looking for a wind-up cloth tape measure that has measurements in feet and inches and is maybe around 30ft.
However I did see that they are still on B&H's website, so maybe they are still around?

Hey Ryan! Awesome to hear about the interview, that's so exciting! I think the biggest tip I could give you would be that attitude is everything. Have a "can do" attitude and always be polite and willing to learn even if the day gets stressful. Keep yourself cool, calm and collected. Guaranteed, you'll have a better time and you'll probably get called back for more work!

I guess I would want to know what experiences they have had and in what capacity (a CV of sorts), and also who they have worked with in the past. Usually my crew come from word of mouth. If someone I know has worked with them them I'll probably seek out their thoughts on the persons ability and attitude on set. If that makes sense.

Hey Felicia how are you? As a fellow AC here in Portugal i have a question for you! Ive been working as an Ac and focus puller for 3 years now in national tv here in portugal, most of it tv series and soup operas, here in portugal its very hard to grow as an AC and experience better productions because its a very small market with no big productions. I would like to work as an AC in other country to see what its like, do you have any advices that may help me find different projects out of Portugal? Sorry for the long question in an older video! Keep up the good work i love your content
I'm good thank you, Gonçalo! Hope you are well. That is a difficult question to answer because it depends on where you are looking at going. I've never worked in another country before but I've found that there are good ways to find other people working in film via creative groups on Facebook. Finding groups for filmmakers wherever you are looking for work is a great step. Another way would be heading to a camera rental facility and introducing yourself. You'd be surprised how many wonderful contacts you can find there.

When I was assisting I had two sizes. One large (kind of like the one in this video) and one a little smaller for smaller jobs where I didn't need everything.

Just a heads up "16mm Film Spools" 6:50 I'm pretty sure is wrong. Pretty sure it's supposed to be 35mm. Gaffer tape is usually 1 inch = 2.54 cm. In the video the Spools have extra room on the edges. I just bought 16mm and looking at them now I'm pretty sure Felicia ment to say 35mm.
