It's a topical satire which was first released in 1962 on the live album "At the Bitter End". The song was written by Michael Brown, a Broadway composer. Michael also composed another Chad Mitchell Trio hit, "Lizzie Borden".
There were a lot of songwriters mocking the John Birch Society in the early 60's, including Tom Paxton, who published his own Birch song on the 5th Issue of the Broadside Magazine. You can hear Tom's song here: • Tom Paxton - The John ... - Hudba

Love these guys. They're as hood now as they ever were.
"We don't know what he did, but he's our hero just the same."
Kinda like the Fulbright scholarship which still exists to this day. Look up J. William Fulbright's politics. Ditto for Woodrow Wilson, probably the biggest racist President the country has ever had. Yet, many schools today still have his name slapped on the building. "Nothing to see here, move on!"
@@demef758 he was racist for the time it was well, ok, except for the popularisation of the kkk, who became a big problem later, but his biggest problems were hid approval of the federal reserve, who became a perfect mean for the capitalists to further control the american economy, and much more importantly, his foreign policy, which became the most important legacy of his, and also the repsonsible of millions of death during the cold war and also nowadays in the middle east

John Birch was a U.S. Army Chaplin stationed in China who ended up being killed by Chinese Communist soldiers during the final days of World War II. The founder of the John Birch Society turned Birch into a martyr, considering him the first casualty of the Cold War, and so naming the society with the permission of Birch's parents. However, Gen. Jimmy Doolittle (of Doolittle Raid fame), had met Birch, and said in his autobiography that he felt sure that Birch would not have approved of the organization being named after him.
PBS got me here. My estimation of John has gone up a notch! John was the real deal! He tipped the balance towards my selecting an Environmental science major!
+PacificCircle1 John gets a kick out of that, wherever the fuck he is.
Who? John Denver or John Birch?
@@MrAlistar99 The fact that they were inspired to become an environmental science major makes it very clear they mean John Denver. There is *nothing* about John Birch that would inspire a career in science (or logic, for that matter).

What a great song! Never heard it before; somehow this one didn't get airtime on the rock FM stations ;-)
This shows that John Denver was opportunistic and knew how to ingratiate himself with the people who run US show business and the record industry. I have lost my respect for the man.
They performed in Richmond, VA. In the 60’s. Fun!
"We think that Ronald Reagan doth protest a bit too much" LOL
I have another recording where they sang Spiro Agnew 😹😹
The Verona Papers !
Venona.
And the Venona Papers didn't prove any of Mccarthy's targets were Communists...
@@sirius212ify as for who is a communist or not, most very rich leftists think they're communists. but they're not going to give up their money and stuff until they destroy the economy and exterminate hundreds of millions. that's one reason they are involved in event 201, crimson contagion and operation lockstep.
Love this!
There is no end to how entertaining hippies are. A riot!
Denver was good, but he could not hold a candle to Chad Mitchell. Compare Denver's singing of the JBS song with Mitchell's, then tell me which one is better: czcams.com/video/pG6taS9R1KM/video.html . A better example of Mitchell's powerful voice can be heard from this same album: czcams.com/video/7QZTNbyA4zk/video.html .BTW: the banjo player on this album was none other than Jim (later Roger) McGuinn, who later formed the Byrds!
now mcguin is republican
@@palestiniansojourner3231 I don't know about that, but isn't it ironic that the very sort of thing this song mocked in the 60s - a commie under every bed - is the very same thing the ultra-left is doing today, finding a white supremacist under every bed? I.e., today's left espouses the very same irrationality it found contemptible 60 years ago, does it not?
@@demef758 Thank you Quack-Anon. Your claim holds no water.
Love them both; there is no need to compare. Music is not a battlefield - you don't have to choose a winner.
Listened to Chad through 1965ish then John D in 67/68. Both are immortalized by a remarkable voice, wide range, and genuine talent.😊😊
I met Chad & the trio together in 2009 in Oregon & again in Miami. Legends!!!!!!

Very Moxy Früvous-y. ;)
Im confused how all of these pro-JBS people in the comments even got here.
Right wingers always seem to find their way into the comments section of music that's making fun of them.
Any song that mentions Peggy Lee is divine.
Pinky Lee
It's PINKY Lee, not PEGGY Lee.
Very contemporary lyrics!
This sounds like Denver Boise and Johnson. Mike Kobluc and Joe Frazier are not on this clip.
thomas Hoban That makes sense to me, since the year after this (1969) Denver released his 1st solo album which included "Leaving on a Jet Plane."
No, Mike and Joe weren't on this clip, but this was recorded before they changed the trio's name.

Now a days it would be singing against Trump and in favor of BLM and Antifa.
Exactly right. Denver (Deutchendorf) was duped.
right - and Fogerty just wrote a song about BLM. Take a hike, fascists.
Antifa ha. Americans are all anti facism.
how do you know? alice cooper and john Lennon liked reagan and Johnny rotten liked trump and roger mcguin liked ben Carsen the republican
correct, its completely legal to sing satirical protest songs these days, even about donald. *rolls eyes to back of head*
This could now be called "The Don Trump Society".

The only problem is the JBS was correct the whole time and also John Denver died from running out of gas. Thats a pretty dumb way to go.
The John Birch Society is right 🎤

The JBS is the main organization responsible for America's continued freedoms. Join us today.
Your a fucking wackjob. Fascism will always be crushed by the communist scrub.
Social democracies are the only fair economies. Far right, and left, are out of whack, and destructive.

If you define a nahtzi state as "free", that is!
I joined the John Birch Society as a young man in 1983. A few months after that someone gave me material written by William Pierce. I saw immediately that the JBS was a dead end for white Americans. I soon left it.
This outfit is living proof that the JBS had it right to begin with.
Remarkable, the number of twits actually posting the same trash and twaddle proponed by the Birchers..only substituting the Qmorons and the Magas' warped and skewed "philosophy", instead! Stupidity must be congenital and they're here to prove it!
The problem with the JBS is they would not allow any discussion of fundamental problems, such as racial issues or the Jewish question. I can only surmise that the ADL infiltrated the JBS and took control and neutralized it. It became a total waste of time.
@@gordonipock9385 they actually had a ton of Nazi sympathizers in their ranks, and I’m sure the Jewish question got discussed plenty.

Poor John Denver. Another idealistic young American who despite experiencing all the benefits of American freedom couldn’t resist the temptation to sell his soul for money and fame. And though he got it all, it wasn’t enough and led to drink, drugs, and despair. A sad waste of God-given talent.
