Chance and Bowman. No question. I was at Oxford with Bowman when he was in the New College Chapel Choir. We knew we were listening to something startlingly new, and the way forward for the voice. But my generation was brought up on the version by Alfred and Mark Deller, so let’s remember them gratefully too, as the real pioneers.

Chance & Bowman win to me. Followed by *stunning* Scholl & Dumaux (intriguing voice Dumaux's, probably because I never heard him in duo with Scholl's nectar-voice) and the very good Djian/Guillon.

Nectar-voice is a good way of describing Scholl. My first exposure to the counter-tenor voice and I fell in love, hearing ":the raggle-taggle gypsies" on the radio (where he also sings the baritone part).

Without a doubt, CHANCE AND BOWMAN. Been listening to so many versions over the years and this is by far the most professional.

Scholl and Dumeaux achieved the best technical and musical quality, but I liked the artistic version of Chance and Bowman. So sad the third one doesn't have a video. Dumeaux's play is always amazing!

Well, so far it's unanimous! Chance and Bowman. I believe in general that the best performances are by musicians of the same nationality as the composer. They just tend to understand the language and culture. I fell in love with Purcell as a kid listening to Alfred Dellar, so for me Alfred and Mark Dellar would be a contender as well. czcams.com/video/x4Txjhj4P9A/video.html

Definitely Chance and Bowman. The others probably don't know what they are singing about. The pair of Scholl and Dumaux is a complete misunderstanding. I don't know who put them together, because these two voices don't even sound together at all. I can't stand performances in which the most important element is that the voice sounds at full volume - there is no music in it, just shouting over who sounds better. Music is not only about showing the singer's ego, there must be space for the color of the voice, colour of the language and, in the case of this piece, lightness and joy. Colleagues, famous countertenors - singing is not only your voice - a little humility and respect for the listener's ear would be useful. Even looking at the faces of Guillon and Bénos-Djian, the appearance of their faces alone discourages me from listening any further.
Considering the above. Oh yeah...definitely Chance and Bowman.
