BEYOND CUTE: Interview with Minions director Pierre Coffin.
The first Despicable Me film took half a billion at the box office. The sequel did almost double that. So it was inevitable that the very happy suits at Universal were going to ask director Pierre Coffin for another installment in the franchise.
The thing was that as a movie fan Coffin was too familiar with over-hyped franchise films that ended up disappointing their fans. And he knew the film would come with a tsunami of marketing, over which he had no control.
That fear of making a film unworthy of its saturation marketing drove him. So his brief to his team was simple: put everything into Minions as though it's the last film we ever make.
The result is a wall-to-wall delight, though Coffin has no tickets on himself, despite the enormous success of the first two films.
In this interview he discusses the pitfalls he and co-director Kyle Balda wished to avoid with Minions, the semi-disastrous test screenings and how he needed to manage the film's cuteness levels to make it enjoyable to parents as well as children.
