ARE YOU AN ALPHA? - Simon Sinek - Why Leaders Eat Last

  • In this in-depth talk, ethnographer and leadership expert Simon Sinek reveals the hidden dynamics that inspire leadership and trust. In biological terms, leaders get the first pick of food and other spoils, but at a cost. When danger is present, the group expects the leader to mitigate all threats even at the expense of their personal well-being. Understanding this deep-seated expectation is the key difference between someone who is just an "authority" versus a true "leader."

Some leaders of the modern-day fail to see this and blindly say, "I'm just doing my job". Last time I took a class at college, my teacher was in fact the opposite kind of leader. He was friendly yet serious, trustworthy, knowledgeable, and provided proper assistance to those who weren't even in the class. Since he had the power to do so, why not do it. People may say, "that's because you paid him to do so". Maybe but nobody goes to the lengths he took.

    "Leaders eat last"
That really is true because I'm in a management position at work and I break last (if I even get a break) because I make sure everyone & everything is taken care first. I break when the work is done, not when it's time for everyone else to metaphorically "eat". The people are my burden & responsibility; I do nothing for myself until they're taken care of.

The point he ends on is that while Alpha's "eat first" a leader will "eat last" meaning a leader understands that he/she must use their alpha qualities not for themselves, but for the good of the whole. They must sacrifice to protect those underneath them.

    Very true from my experience.
A few years ago I was in a bar with a couple of friends. The biggest, strongest friend (who had always been our caretaker) was so drunk he went to the bathroom for an hour and didn't come out. Left me with our two friends, one was an overweight placid guy the other was a small nervous guy. We were playing pool. Three guys came into the bar and two of them immediately came over to me and started trying to offend me. Getting too close, invading my space. Smacktalking etc. I could see their betas were glancing around at my friends, and it became apparent they wanted trouble. Their alpha, the biggest guy by far, was sitting at the bar with his back to us. I didn't get a good look at him but I knew he was at least 6'3" and probably 3-4 stone heavier than me. I was very nervous, I knew I wouldn't be able to fight all these guys (and they were bad guys) and I knew I couldn't rely on either on my friends who were present, and a little bit of me felt responsible for getting them out of harms way. So I "pretended" to be alpha, and got cheeky back, and stood up tall and kept control best I could.
Finally after what seemed like forever, our big friend came out of the bathroom, and he stood there silently near the doorway looking at the three guys. I had no idea how long he'd been standing there when I spotted him, I'd been playing pool and trying to keep my eyes on my two extremely nervous friends. Then my alpha friend put down his drink and walked over to the biggest one of their group and sat down next to him and put his arm around him. Looking him straight in the eye and smiling, he asked if he could buy them all a beer and started feeling the guys nipple inside his shirt. Then he stood up and laughed and said "yeah I'm not gay! Just joking! Hey you guys want a fight? Or a beer? I'll buy you a beer. Or I'll kick the fuck out of you... nah I'm just joking! Let me buy you a beer! THREE BEERS PLEASE DARLIN! You wanna beer, yeah?...." and I swear to god all three had left the bar in the next 2 minutes.
That's alpha, he knew instantly he had to do something, he wasn't nervous, he knew what to do and he ENJOYED doing it. He got a kick out of it. Then he came over and rubbed my shoulder and said "well done, sorry I was being sick ha! lets play pool" and we carried on playing.
So yes I was nervous, because there was trouble and our alpha, our protector wasn't present. Yes I (we) expected him to fix it and step up. Yes he DID step up without fear or considering his own safety. Yes he got the job done. I guess he was just more alpha than their alpha!

To anyone confused about "should the alpha/leader eat first or last", here's how it is: the alpha/leader eats first, so that they can provide. If the alpha/leader is not fed and able to protect, then he's not fulfilling his role as a leader. It's not to say "oh, alpha/leaders are selfish" no, not at all! But in order to be able to help others out (especially those who depend on you) you need to "eat first".
For example: when you're on an airplane and the oxygen masks drop and you have seconds to make a life or death decision, do you put your mask on or your kids? You put yours on, then help your kid, and then help others. But if you help others first, then you run out of oxygen and die, and you can't help anyone if you're dead.

No , if you have kids I hope you feed them first before yourself. I’m pretty sure you wouldnt be disrespectful enough to make a meal and eat it infront of everyone and then feed the other 10 people or so the left overs. It’s like saying if there’s a flood coming, you get onto the boat first then help other people and your kids, but by the time you try and help your kids half of them or more have drowned , then that’s where you fail at being an alpha male protector/provider. Everyone should put their kids first man, it’s common sense. I think people need to stop trying to associate humans with animals, we are on a much higher level of consciousness compared to a gorilla or any other species. I think you mean “you can’t help anyone if the people you’re meant to be protecting and helping are dead, because you’ve been too selfish to help others first before yourself”

Even if the claimed synchronization phenomenon occurs, and even if human pheromones cause it, so what? It’s a matter of curiosity, not of clinical importance. When there is a reason to manipulate ovulation or menstrual timing, pharmaceutical hormones work very well. The paucity of evidence for human pheromones suggests that if they do exist, their effects must be too small in magnitude to be very important.

The menstual sync theory is wrong. If syncronization is intended to exclude competition, as you said, the resulting selective pressure would exclude future synchronization, because those in sync would not pass on those very genes. It is more likely that synchronization improves the mating chances of the women.

    • @zelda12346
      @zelda12346 Před 7 lety +16

It might just be left over from lion-style harem of human history and it hasn't affected a woman's ability to propagate her genes negatively since.
Think about it: in a pack, the alpha gets a harem. Men just like sex, so if a woman is spent, he can impregnate another one down the assembly line. If the cycles are not in synch, then the alpha has to be having sex constantly instead of in a concentrated period. They need to hunt and do other things, and so they can't have sex all the time, reducing propagation rates.
As far as specific aligned to alpha, it might just be an artifact of chance or there could be just the baseline effect of not being as physically fit and so die off more quickly even in the system working as normal. Aligned to the non-alpha would increase chances of instability in alignment, which would affect propagation as said above.
Maybe there is no evolutionary reason and it's just all an artifact of chance that hasn't negatively affected us like the appendix or tonsils.

"Menstrual synchrony research declined after the published critiques in the 1990s and around the turn of the century.[9][10][11][12] The two studies published during this decade incorporated the methodological critiques into their designs and used more appropriate statistical methods.[13][14]
Yang and Schank conducted the largest study to date with 186 Chinese college women. Ninety three of the women lived in 13 dorm rooms, 5 to 8 women per room. The other ninety three women lived in 16 dorm rooms, 4 to 8 women per room for a total of 29 rooms. The women were given notebooks to record the onset of each of their cycles and they collected data for over a year for most of the women.[13]
Following the statistical critiques of Schank,[11][12] they argued that circular statistics were required to analyze periodic data for the existence of synchrony. However, menstrual cycles are variable in frequency (e.g., 28 or 31 day cycles) and in length. They pointed out that there are no statistical methods for analyzing messy data like this, so they developed Monte Carlo methods for detecting synchrony.[13]
They found that in 9 of the 29 groups, women's cycles converged for one cycle closer than expected by chance, but then they diverged again. Upon further analysis, they found that for women with the cycle variability reported in this study, on average 10 out of 29 groups of women would show this pattern of convergence followed by divergence. They concluded that finding 9 out of 29 groups with convergence and then divergence is about what would be expected by chance and concluded that there was no evidence the women in this study synchronized their menstrual cycles.[13]
Ziomkiewicz conducted a study with 99 Polish college women living in two dormitories. Thirty six of the women lived in 18 double rooms and sixty three lived in 21 triple rooms. Women recorded their menstrual cycle onsets on menstrual calendars provided to them and 181 days' worth of menstrual cycle data were collected. The mean menstrual cycle length was 30.5 days (SD = 4.56).[14]
Based on the mean cycle length of the women in this study, the expected difference by chance in menstrual cycle onset was approximately 7.5 days. The mean difference in cycle onset was calculated for the beginning, middle, and end of the study for the pairs and triples of women. Ziomkiewicz found no statistically significant difference from the 7.5 day expected difference at either the beginning, middle, or end of the study. She concluded that there was no evidence of menstrual synchrony.[14]" Wikipedia. yeah its wiky, but also, i find intriguing these studies, and yet, this guy comes with some ALPHA WOMAN revolutionary theory, and i dont even know why....

Well if you are one of the 80% of women who believes in synchronicity - brace yourself. It isn’t a thing. Since McClintock’s study there has been enough research with negative results to move menstrual synchronicity into urban mythology. Many studies have tried to replicate McClintock’s findings - some have succeeded, but more have not.
Criticisms of McClintock’s work include statistical errors - not controlling for chance in the results and inflating the initial differences in the onset of menstrual cycles that led to synchronicity being over stated.
A study of Dogon women in west Africa, who were segregated into menstrual huts, found no synchronicity over 763 days and no effect of the moon on periods (and these were ideal test conditions, as there was no electricity).
study of 186 women in Chinawho lived together for a year also found no synchronicity. But the researchers pointed out that the start of periods varied for women, and cycles were often variable, which could give the false impression of synchronicity. Menstrual cycles can vary from between 21 to 35 days. Stress, weight loss or illness will all disrupt periods. A study of 26 lesbian couplesfound no synchronicity but did find individual menstrual cycles varied by up to 10 days. So despite the internet refusing to let this myth die - you are the owner of your menstrual cycle and no friend, however close, can control it.

As well as all the "alpha" stupidity. There is no such hierarchical bullshit on humans. Not even on wolves, which is where some idiots gratuitously extrapolated the model from to humans. The same person who "discovered" such hierarchical organization on wolves latter dismissed it, as he realized that those where just family packs where the "alpha" male and female where just the parents of the rest. Of course they would lead, the young ones had to learn from them. Even when he tried to remove the book he wrote about his first stance, no publisher accepted, because they're fucking assholes who only care about economical profit (and it sold a lot). Therefore, misinformation spread like plague and idiots without any scientific rigour extrapolated it to humans.

Nice, love these videos. My ramblings: In a society ruled by conformity, all people will attempt to be alpha at some point. And in the midst of extreme specialization, the roles of alphas in a work setting is questionable, to me at least. Working in teams, I've noticed that people who don't know how to consciously reduce their "alpha-ness" really make me question their input sometimes. And, others generally regard them with disdain. The one who's considerate of everybody's strengths, and steps back to allow others to shine, is a great leader. Not to mention, in a team where the alpha is separate (the boss) and clearly above everybody... no one benefits from peoples' singular desire to rise up in status. Respect and trust is earned, not forced. To me, this is a very redeeming quality in humans, but that's neither here nor there. Hierarchy in society is very fluid within the middle power/status group, especially on the macro-level, above the family unit, but otherwise it's not at all. I won't be advising myself to become more alpha... I'll just let happen what will happen...

Being a leader doesn't mean you rank higher than someone, and even the term alpha is wrong to use here in my opinion, being a good leader is about guiding your people so everyone can reach their full potential. A leader is on the same level as anyone else. This is also the reason why the capitalist system is completely flawed and why so many people are unhappy with their jobs and their bosses (which this guy said no one cared about but that was completely wrong).

So much of modern society and the global economy seems to be ran by intentions/motives rooted in ego or an egocentric nature at the least. If this is the case it would seem to explain (at least in part) why the alpha/beta dynamic is so relevant in its place in modern life.

Real leadership is rare in the business world. The business world is really a knife fight. A marketing person fights the competition to get the business but then might get stabbed in the back by a fellow employee that is trying to take over his/her developed accounts. A good marketing person carries a very sharp bayonet, not a knife.

Truthfully these days to many think being the leader is being a loud, pushy, "dominant" / controlling. Being an alpha and a leader is a whole lot more than that.

I can assure you Simon, I absolutely do have problem if a boss makes more money if he can't do his job or if his job is easier. They become boss by being an asshole, not by being good. And i have a problem and am offended by anyone who thinks they're an alpha or higher status, i don't accept it at all - not because I believe I am higher, but because I believe all are equal.

Few people want to step to the challenge of leadership for fear of failure. For themselves. When you care about yourself first no progress can be made. A true leader puts the needs of others before their own and accepts failure as a whole. Accepting failure is part of being a good leader. Anyone who says they have never failed is a liar and not to be trusted. Those who can accept it without blaming others are fit to lead.

I always tell them to change jobs if they legitimately believe that. Your boss does that? Quit and go somewhere where your skills and work ethic are rewarded.
If they're convinced that all bosses are like that, no problem. Start their own business. Set it up and run it the way you see best.
Oh, and "but I can't because... whatever BS reason". No, they could if they wanted to. Most don't and I think that's because they know the truth. That truth is that THEY aren't worth that much. They don't determine how valuable you are to the market, the market decides that. They don't actually provide enough value to succeed. It's like when ugly people claim that they're hot. I know, it's a crude example but hear me out. They don't determine that. Other people decide it. If someone is really attractive, other people react accordingly.

@@RandomPerson-nd2ey I'm absolutely and 100% not upset my boss takes in more money than me. The idea that allowed me to accumulate wealth in the first place came from the mind of my boss. This idea for value creation quite literally would not exist were it not for my boss who thought it up.
Why would I, as a programmer, be paid as much as the guy who thought the idea up and took on the risk? It actually makes no sense, and on top of that, we live in a society where a boss is allowed to give the employees as much or as little capital as they choose.
If I thought my skills weren't being rewarded at par, I would leave. It's incredibly simple to me. I have a particular set of skills that makes me valuable in certain areas and worth nothing in others. What is the big puzzling question here for these people?

Great at distinguishing the synthetic diamonds from the real thing. It reflects the feelings in society today because it’s dead on in many cases. However one must remember that it’s never a smart practice to paint all people in a segment of society with the same brush. Nothing could be more harmful to the people who genuinely are trying their best than to be wrongly lumped in with their social loafer counterparts. Thanks

Banking was conceived in iniquity and was born in sin.
      The bankers own the earth.
Take it away from them, but leave them the power to create money, and with the flick of the pen
they will create enough deposits to buy it back again.
However, take it away from them, and all the great fortunes like mine will disappear and they ought to disappear,
for this would be a happier and better world to live in.
But, if you wish to remain the slaves of bankers and pay the cost of your own slavery,
let them continue to create money.”
      - Sir Josiah Stamp, Director of the Bank of England(appointed 1928). Reputed to be the 2nd wealthiest man in England at that time.”
