COH Quick & Dirty Guide

- This is a really quickly produced guide to getting started in City of Heroes on the Homecoming Servers. Apologies for any oddities, confusion or incorrect facts, I made this super quickly and did the minimal editing :)

You can just follow the instructions there if you want to get started with playing this terrific game on the Homecoming Freeshard. I play on Torchbearer Server just FYI as there are actually 5 servers running on HC :) - Hry
One thing I found out about making a character is to conceptualize your idea - what is your character really good at? That's your primary. What else do you do really good, but not as good as your primary descriptor? That's your secondary. Everything else can be mustered through power pools and/or epic power pools which any character can gain access to. Just because you imagine that your character can throw a relatively decent punch doesn't mean you're restricted to a particular archetype. You could invest heavily in the Fighting Power Pool with a Sentinel and wade into melee along with the other melee archetypes. Know that you won't be as good as the other archetypes designed specifically to melee, but melee attacks are available to you if that's a particular playstyle you want to have available even though the archetype you chose doesn't state being capable of doing.
I was recently introduced to this game on the Homecoming private server or free shard as you call it.
There is a LOT of things going on there, so I appreciate this guide very much.
P.s. I can relate to your story about you and your wife buying the game to play together and losing loads of time to character customization, lol. My wife and I do that for just about every game we play together :p

If you haven't heard, the Homecoming team recently negotiated official permission to operate the game from its own NCSoft - this is a first for fan revived games and should mean that Homecoming has a more stable future.
just so folks know "Iron Lad" is also copyrighted to Marvel (pesky comics), best idea for "close enough" is parodies, like Incredible Grouch, Rat Man, Iron Chef etc etc.. sadly there's always a risk of some copyright troll but the more random you make your character the less likely it'll come foul.. plus part of the fun of superheroes is making things as silly as you want.

so the P2W Vendor and the different changes from Live to Homecoming were implemented by Leandro who was running the "secret server" (now known as Resurgence) prior to SCORE getting access to the source code and creating Homecoming. The version HC launched was "as is" with Leandro's changes and alterations. Of course since, they've created their own Issue expansions.
Yes, I am more or less aware of the history here, but thanks for posting it for anyone else who reads up on the server. Regardless of that history I am so glad we can play the game again, it has always been one of my favourites :P
@@oldskoolgaming still my favorite MMO. It was a very emotional day and a blessing when I got to play again. and then for the community to turn around and bless me right back because of my Comic Con Fire Farms. Right in my heart.

Glad you enjoyed it, it was literally Quick and Dirty - one shot mostly, very few retakes and quick editing in DaVinci, but I figured I needed to get a video out in some form because getting started in COH/V is pretty complex and its a great game. Already introduced a few people to the game who had never played it when it was live :)
