Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project Any% Speedrun in

- This is an RTA speedrun of Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project set on Easy difficulty. There are a lot of mistakes in this run, but mostly minor mistakes. I did die a total of three times (two times in E5M3, and one time in E7M1). These deaths alone costed me about 15 seconds. Clearing the long gap in E5M3 typically takes me a couple of attempts. Not sure how my death in E7M1 happened... I fell off the moving bar after making a quicksave.
Overall, I feel this is a pretty decent time. I'll still need a lot more practice if I want to pull off a god tier speedrun. With current strats, sub 1:20:00 may be doable.
Shoutout to Xarthok. A couple of the tricks I used in this run are tricks I learned from watching his DN:MP IL speedruns.

A few things to note:
- Three pipebombs that are in near proximity produce a much bigger blast radius than the blast radius of one or two pipebombs upon detonation (however, four or more pipebombs detonated at once won't have a bigger blast radius than three pipebombs). Sometimes the extra blast radius is needed to trigger explosive barrels at the other side of a wall / barrier; if the wall is cracked at the side with explosive barrels, then exploding the barrels will cause the wall to open up and thus allow the player to skip directly to that area. I exploit this once in the first level (i.e. E1M1)... I throw three pipebombs to blow up the barrier that's initially blocking the yellow key card.
- The GLOPP gun can shoot through very thin walls. This can also be useful to trigger explosive barrels at the other side of a wall / barrier. I use this trick to my advantage in E3M1 and E3M2. The GLOPP gun makes its first appearance in E3M1.
- At the end of E8M1, Duke will lose all of his weapons (except his hand gun) while going through the weapon scan machine. The normal way of beating this level is to re-acquire all of Duke's weapons before destroying the spherical force field that's guarding the key card. However, it is a lot quicker to destroy the force field with Duke's kick attack with double damage and complete the rest of the game without ever collecting back Duke's weapons (saves about 1 minute). The only disadvantage is that it makes E8M2 and E8M3 much harder to go through, and there is a much greater chance of dying (this is especially true for E8M2. I had a couple good runs put to waste because of E8M2).
- Duke automatically acquires the double damage power-up when his EGO hits 250 and another when it hits 400. However, these can only happen once per level (not including double damage power-up pickups). Having double-damage is especially useful for most boss fights (that's why it's typically a good idea to hit 250 or 400 EGO points right before a boss fight).
- Having the double damage power up actually increases Duke's kick attacks by a factor of 10 instead of 2. Hitting an enemy with Duke's air kick with double damage is equivalent to hitting an enemy with 10 rocket projectiles. You can see that I kill the E3M3 and E7M3 bosses very quickly with Duke's air kick attack.
- Duke can go through the drills in E7M2 while they are in motion, but it seems to only work at certain time intervals. About 5.5 seconds after a drill has started moving from a halted state, you can jump through it without getting crushed, but you'll have about a 4 second window of getting across before the moving drill becomes deadly again.

This game still holds up pretty well. Easy on the eyes but a bit repetitive. I got this game on the morning of my birthday years ago and took the rest of the day beating it. Thanks for the bit of nostalgia.

Perhaps the last great Duke Nukem game. Fittingly a plat-former like the first two titles. Never realised how badly bosses can be bested by pipe bombs :D
35:51 I'm pretty sure that there's a faster way to do the first part in this boss fight. I haven't played this game in ages but I remember that if you kept running towards the queen while spamming the kick button, Duke's animation would glitch and you would practically deliver a kick with every single key press due to animation cancelling. Combined with the kick combo mechanic and the double damage power-up, the health bar would go down almost in an instant.
That trick can also be used with every immovable enemy if I remember correctly. If they react to your kicks(by moving a bit back as usual), the kick animation starts working properly again and the glitch doesn't work.
there is also another way, you can quickswitch to the shotgun back and forth, making the shotgun rapid fire, would be faster than the rocket launcher already.
Also in the robot women boss fight in E7M3, you can damage her without let her talk, so basically stay on the left and shoot the shit out of her.
@@d1rtydan194 Haha, your tip is actually ahead of its time. We started using shotgun quickswapping and killing the robot woman before actual fight on E7M3 only about a year ago.

@@uniwersal7061 thats still something. I only have the problem that my new PC makes the game glitch because of too much CPU power (several cores). I can't jump properly sometimes even when I press buttons.

+Andrew Martinez To kill gator grunt boss, I always bend down and and spam the assalt rilfe. It slows down the boss and even if he kicks you, you'll survive. I like to call the mid air kick the "Mid air Ass kicking X)

Why is this game not on steam ?
After the 3D Realms and Gearbox lawsuit was settled, Gearbox became the "full owner" of the Duke IP. In other words, Gearbox now owns past and present Duke Nukem games. As a result of this, all of the Duke Nukem titles that preceded Duke Nukem Forever were removed from digital stores such as Steam and GOG. Gearbox did say that they expect Duke Nukem 3D to be back as a digital sale sometime this year. I'm not sure about the other Duke games.
@@VanTemplar I'm just glad I was able to get this game and the Megaton Edition before they took it off Steam. The newer Duke 3D is crap because of the missing levels from the Megaton Edition, and it's overpriced.

couldn't help but notice that a steam notification showed up on the screen at the start. now did u add this game to ur library or did u by it on steam? because I couldn't find it on there.
Sorry for the late response. xD This game was available for purchase on steam at the time of making this speedrun, but unfortunately it was taken off digital stores after Gearbox Software became the "full owner" of the IP. Not sure when (if ever) it will be available again on steam or gog.

To get your weapons back you need to climb the ladder where it says WEAPONS on the right side by the babe. Then you need to jump your way up and past a lot of robots and trust me it's going to make the game soo much easier.

Getting the weapons in E8M1 certainly does make E8M2 and E8M3 easier to go through, but getting the weapons in E8M1 costs about a minute (which is a lot of time for a speedrunner). IIRC, E8M2 and E8M3 can be completed about 10 seconds faster with a full arsenal, but that is not even close to making up the time lost of picking up the weapons.
I've tested it by going through the final episode while re-acquiring my weapons, and my speedrun times for the episode were slower by about 50-60 seconds than when I didn't recollect the weapons.
a majority of people watching this including myself use this as a faster way to beat levels and get the game over with lol. the vid is great and saves time instead of the 100% vids.
So fast the model was bugged in 13:46 :D

loved playen this game.....hell sometimes I reinstall it just for the fun of it....the best Duke Nukem game imo.
did you ever beat the secret boss? (WOZMA)...I havnt tried that yet I would have to reinstall but if you beat the boss on hard difficulty it gives you a secret OP weapon from start to end of the whole campaign
if you do get the secret weapon will you ever do a speed run with that? or is that breaking a speed run rule?

+MegaTigerII This game is really fun, indeed! :) I wouldn't say it's my favorite Duke Nukem game (Duke 3D is my favorite), but I'd say this and Zero Hour are my personal favorite third party Duke Nukem games. :)
I've beaten the secret boss before on the Xbox 360 version back in June 2010. I don't remember Wozma being too difficult to beat, but it does take a few minutes to defeat it. Pretty cool reference to the Final Fantasy IX boss, Ozma! :P
In regards to obtaining the X-3000 weapon, I'm pretty sure you can get it just by collecting every nuke on Hard difficulty (that's how I obtained it on the Xbox 360 version. I haven't acquired it on this version yet).
When I was playing this game on the Xbox, I actually did a few IL DN:MP speedruns with the X-3000. The X-3000 weapon certainly makes things a lot easier! :) It's perfectly fine for someone to speedrun through the game with the X-3000, but that will have to be in a separate speedrun category. Personally, I enjoy speedrunning through the maps more with the regular weapons. But if people really want to see a speedrun that uses the X-3000, then I may give it a shot. Been pretty busy lately, but I do plan to play games more often during the summer. Cheers.

It has been a while since I played this game, but I remember double jump can be difficult when playing this at a high frame rate. IIRC, I was able to get double jump to work by simply changing the Driver setting to "OpenGL" in the graphics options.
At 4:21, he says "Cleanup on Aisle 4." He also uses that quote in the Shop N Bag level (E4M3) in Duke 3D!
