The books they're reading are-well, not a hint exactly, but part of the joke. Iain Banks / Iain M. Banks was an author who wrote "literary" fiction under the former name and science fiction including his middle initial. So, the same person, presented differently, as the desk officer appears to be. I suppose they are also kind of a hint, if you notice that the officer appears to be switching back and forth between reading two different books depending on the time of day and/or his hair's appearance.

As in the Leonardo DiCapro/Claire Danes movie. Hence the costumes, the suicide by gun, and breaking in to Lovefool at the end. The "Romeo & Juliet" the Amateur Dramatics Society is putting on is a homage to Baz Luhrmann's "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" which moves the story to the US. Usually set in the countryside or small towns where everyone knows everyone, and where solving a murder is not about blasting your way through a bunch of baddies or using flashy technology like in CSI, but all about calmly connecting the dots between all of the people. The NWA member who watched the camera feeds is Edward Woodward, who had lots of memorable parts over the years, but probably his most memorable was one playing a police officer sent to a remote community, just like Nicholas Angel. I'm not sure if you recognized the priest, played by Paul Freeman, who you previously saw in Raiders of the Lost Ark as Indy's rival Belloq. Early in the movie one of the Andys jokingly suggested they call up the whole phone book, starting with Aaron A. Aaronson; the red-headed kid in the miniature village is later revealed to be that kid. But that joke is itself a reference to the Judge Dredd strip in the comic 2000AD, which Simon Pegg is a huge fan of; in one story we meet Aaron A. Aaronson, a man who changed his name specifically to become the first person in the phone book.

This movie is so good, every time you watch you notice something new. The sheer calibre of actors in this is phenomenal, there's not a single wasted performance, they are all brilliant.
Cameos from Cate Blanchett and Peter Jackson at the start.
I love that they built up a completely believable crime narrative with reasonable motives like something out of a John Grisham novel and then went "Nah actually these people got killed because they were annoying."
Some of the little details that others may or may not have mentioned are:
Nicholas never actually kills anyone. He's a police officer first and foremost and whilst he would be well within his rights to kill them, he doesn't and sees them all arrested.
When Nicholas is riding back into town, you can see a poster in one of the shop windows advertising a production of Romeo and Juliet with the new actors.
The fact that the names of the NWA are all weirdly sinister (Butcher, Skinner, Hatcher etc.) and the other names are just the person's job. Messenger works for the newspaper, Tiller is a gardener, Merchant is wealthy and so on.
Every single thing that Danny asks Nicholas "Have you done this?" They do by the end of the movie. Like when he says "Have you ever fired your gun in the air and gone agggh." or "Have you ever fired your gun while in a high-speed pursuit." They do all of it.
The relationship between Nicholas and Danny is great, it's a true bromance.
    Love this movie so much.

Yes! Please do the Evil Dead Trilogy. The original Evil Dead is the first feature film directed by Sam Raimi who directs the Toby Maguire Spidermans. Watching the progression of the creativity used for the special effects from the super low budget first film to the significantly increased budget of the final film is a lot of fun!

Oh man, I would love to see their reaction to Army of Darkness, it's my favorite movie.

Olivia Colman, (police woman Doris Thatcher) played opposite of David Tennet in the BBC series Broadchurch. She plays a detective, and was AWESOME in it as well.

The "Generic Ex-Wife" is Cate Blanchette. Volunteered for an uncredited role because she enjoyed Shaun of the Dead so much.
