I really admire Bishop Barron’s concern about young people leaving the Church. He has other videos regarding this (Catechism crisis, etc). Its important to talk about it. If they are leaving because of suffering well no one said Christianity is easy. That’s selfish. Jesus said carry your cross and follow me (Matthew 16:24). All the saints suffered one way or another and it lead to their sanctification and salvation. God just wants what is best for us. Stop blaming God for all of your problems. That comes from the evil one. FYI I am a young adult and I have grown closer to God in part thanks to Bishop Barron. Praying for you, Your Excellency 🙏 keep up the good work!

That would be like a drunk leaving AA because some of the members fell off the wagon. If anything people are leaving the Church because they do not think they are sinners in need of salvation.

Sheen had a deep belief in Catholic tradition while having the skills on how to relate and communicate effectively with the modern society of his time, the 1950's. In so doing he was steadfast with traditional Catholic teaching, without compromise. He was an able communicator, applying a great general knowledge in psychology and sciences, to make his point on religious matters. This was Sheen to me. Bishop Barron, in this CZcams you almost give the impression, without being explicit, that Sheen was a modernist (by opening a window to modern society) who made half baked concessions in some spheres of human nature that today are hot topics, e.g. on sexuality. I watched several of Sheen's discourses and he does not seem to have ever distorted in a dubious manner any one of the Church's teachings. God bless Bishop Sheen and may he be forever in God's palms, and in our memory. Perhaps you could graciously give us some more clarity. Thank you. Luigi (Malta)

Your statement about Bishop Sheen not compromising his beliefs is correct. To the best of my knowledge, Bishop Barron did not know Bishop Sheen. He is applying an intellectual interpretation of who Bishop Sheen was from reading/listening to his words and perhaps from talking to people who knew him. Yes, Bishop Sheen was well studied and top of all of his classes. Yes, he kept on top of current events and trends; but, he did it to know what was on the minds of his audience. His speeches started from current events and would transition into a discussion about our Lord. He especially focused on Christ's sufferings done on our behalf out of love for us. He also spent an hour everyday before the Blessed Sacrament; waiting/watching with Him; just as Christ asked His apostles Peter, James and John to do in the Garden of Gethsemane. Bishop Sheen said the Holy Spirit would communicate things to him during that 'holy' hour that would come up later in the day. He was also extremely thoughtful, always remembering to contact my parents on their wedding anniversary regardless of where he was in the world. He was a very happy and energetic person; very inquisitive about a variety of topics and laughed alot. Above all, he had a deep heartfelt love for our Lord which drove him to do all that he could. I do not agree with Bishop Barron's assessment of Bishop Sheen, but I am thankful that he is drawing attention to his life and his books and radio/TV presentations.

      @@jeanvandorst4287 Hi Jean,
Yes, Bishop Sheen would not have 'fit in" well in this period of history. However, he did not 'fit in' well in his time either. He followed our Lord who was giving the Sermon on the Mount, casting out demons, healing the sick; but at the same time overturning the money tables in the temple and calling the corrupt religious leaders "you brood of vipers!". Love does not settle, does not become complacent, and it does not 'fit in'. Instead it calls out all evil, all unloving acts & thoughts; and challenges those same people to take up their cross and bear the burdens of those around them out of love for our Lord. Just as our Lord did for us. Love does not seek to 'fit in'; instead it seeks to transform sluggish and slovenly hearts into hearts that are on fire, full of love for others.

@@tom1b1b8 Good post. Bishop Sheen's willingness to "calls out all evil" was one of his most admirable traits. I feel that many Catholics have fallen for this Buddhist idea that calling out evil is contrary to love. It is a relic of an unsophisticated past. We should never tell a young man, who wants to embrace a sinful lifestyle, that he is on the wrong path.

Too many so-called fervent Catholics point their fingers at those of their brethrem who invite dialogue. Of course this can be dangerous fr those who do not practise their faith with the heart or who do not know their own religion well; this is why I appreciate the advice you give on choosing a sound model Catholic, getting "grounded" in his/her teaching then discarding the "lecture notes" and going out to tackle the world on a clean slate; i.e. not just parroting the knowledge acquired, but living it out!

    Bishop Baron,
Recently watched your last video on Fulton Sheene where you speak about finding a touch tone person to study. Where should I start? I don't have a college education. Reading is something I do and I'm very slow at it. Most of the books I've enjoyed and read have been read to me on Audible on my phone. Sadly most of the books I've either physically read or had read to me the information doesn't really stay in my mind but I do understand what I read when I'm reading it. It does help if I read something over and over again like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which do bring to life and link the Old and New Testament for me. Having my first son at 46 (he's nine months old now) seems like I never get there. Really enjoyed your last book " To Light a Fire on the Earth" and I've listened to a couple books. One by Thomas Aquinas, one by Saint Augustine and "The Seven Storie Mountain" by Thomas Merton but like I said the information didn't stick and to really read these books I feel I'd need a companion book to help me understand the Author. Really enjoyed The Catholicism series but haven't been able to purchase any pivotal series due to money just not being there. Any suggestions? I know you are busy and will continue to learn what I can from you. Maybe you are the touch tone I need and I just need to keep listening

Jon, I have three suggestions. First, William Barclay wrote commentaries on each of the 4 Gospels. They include a tremendous amount of cultural background information (things we wouldn't know because we weren't around back then). Bishop Sheen highly recommended them. Second, read the Diary of St Faustina Kowalska. It is easy to understand and has conversations between her and our Lord. If you don't have time to read the whole diary, just read the text in bold (those are the words spoken by Jesus). Pope JPII is the one who read her diary and declared her a saint; so you can trust what you read in it. Also, there is an audio version, just sample the audio first, some people had some difficulty following the readers Polish accent. Lastly, (please take no offense to this last suggestion) eat a handful of walnuts each day. Several studies have proven that they improve memory/retention and general cognitive abilities. The studies were done over a two month period, so if you try them and nothing changes, you can always stop. Substitute almonds if you don't like the taste of walnuts.

I have only read the first quarter of the Summa and not in the original Latin, but I can say I only found the quantity, not the quality, of the arguments to be impressive. (I can read Latin, and did read St Justin Martyr's writings in their original language, but am not fast enough to want to tackle so long a tome.) Aquinas addressed a great many straw man arguments for positions which seem so silly I doubt anyone has ever really supported them, plus a few good arguments in favor of doctrines that seem far more reasonable than his own. He attacks the weak arguments thoroughly, but whenever he presents an opposing view that might have some merit he dismisses it with an appeal to authority. That authority was usually Aristotle but often Pseudo-Dionysus (which Aquinas did not recognize as a fake) and sometimes bible verses taken wildly out of context.
Reading Aquinas greatly reduced by respect for Sacred Tradition. His conception of God as "pure act" seems like one of the greatest follies in the history of philosophy and theology. He borrows way too much from the physics and metaphysics of a pagan who was wrong about most things.
I don't think Aquinas was as wrong as often as John Calvin was, but at least Calvin was far more eloquent and could keep the reader's attention while expressing his terrible arguments.

If I give you a gift, and you give me something in return, then it is no longer a gift, and the Apostle Paul says that you will get what you have earned in Romans 4:4, ( and that is death - Romans 6:23). "And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness," Romans 4:5. OK - Enough with the Evangelization - in an ideal world but this is not one - the only ones I ever hear talk about evangelization are Catholics - no one else is interested. The very foundation of Protestantism was the notion of a personal 1:1 relationship with God without the institution of the Church - how is that going to work with Catholicism? One of the Pope Pius's said the wisest words I ever read on Evangelism - he said if the Faith is true then it has always been true and always will be true. Those who chose to rip the Church asunder must want to come back to the fullness of the faith. But not even Jesus went chasing people. My Orthodox and Protestant friends are happy with their churches and have no desire to merge. In the age of diversity maybe we should embrace diversity and let people find their own faith that works for them and stop this.
