  • Freshwater trout carry one of the most delicious, delicate and rich fillets you will find on any fish. In this video we will explore the quickest, as well as the cleanest, methods of obtaining the best fillets possible from them. Sporting that dense orange meat, brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout and even hybrids like tiger trout and splake are all fabulous eating. Although these fish appear much different than say, a walleye or a perch, there are many similarities in the way we fillet them. That being said, these fish definitely have a few characteristics that make them a little more difficult to fillet efficiently.

    Thank you for this video, probably the best one out there. Professional and competent. I've cleaned a lot of fish and I still learned a few things to make me better at it. Cheers!

    I don't get to fish much since moving to the city but as a chef, I do like to buy fresh fish at the market. We were trained to cut thru the head.
    So thanks for your terrific instructional video. Beautiful pin bone work, btw!

    Omg I thought I was the only guy on lake superior who used tweezers! I also use an 8in old-timer fillet knife and been loving the new freshwater Gerber fillet knife too.

    My partner and I just watched it! We had been trying too clean our fish way to fast for some reason. We'll definitely take our time for now on and also get some fish tweezers! Also, we like the fishy taste! But we make a lot of fish stew.

    Cook your trout whole and broil it with butter and herbs, When its done you can pull the entire bone section out at one time. You will have alot more fish to eat!

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  Před rokem

      I cook trout that way too. Especially smaller ones. Lots of people can’t stomach eating fish that is served whole though. That’s why it’s important to also know how to fillet them. Fillets from a larger fish also smoke much better than a whole fish.

    I was watching another video on cleaning and they said leave them little bones and because they won't hurt anything after you fry them or you bake it in the oven cuz they will turn soft just like eating a sardine

    • @calebwistad
      @calebwistad  Před rokem +4
