For me, soap is for when my hands are physically dirty, as is something like food, dirt, etc. sanitizer is for when my is not really dirty but definitely has some nasty bacteria on it. Counting dollar bills is an excellent example.

you actually have a very good point like when I'm at the doctor's office I always see the doctors appliance hand sanitizer BUT still I do see them washing their hands in the sink they do both it's a good way to eliminate some of the stuff and then just rinse your hands down the drain
I have to correct you on that! Soap has a major disadvantage over alcoholic desinfection. Soap, also just water without soap, removes the natural fatty layer on your skin, which realy dries out the skin. This makes it possible for germs to get in. For hygiene desinfection is the ONLY proper way. Alcohol does not dry out skin as much, because as you said, it smears around. For medicinal jobs you need to prefer desinfection over soap. Only wash your hands, if ther is VISIBLE or smellable dirt. And use a cream/lotion afterwards to make the skin fatty again, which acts as a barrier againgst germs.
I get your point but personally I haven't had any issues with dry hands.
I know a couple of people having dry hands - during winter months. Have been using only soap and for whole my life, several times a day and works perfectly.

There are exceptions, C. diff is a spore forming bacteria so they are resistant to alcohol-based hand sanitizer (but not hand washing)

I use hand soap when provided (such as when I'm not at home, and in a public restroom) my other alternative is the hand sanitizer; which I carry a small bottle of in my purse. Sometimes you have to make do with what you got !!!

I only use hand sanitizer when I have no way to get to soap and water, and I still consider my hands to be dirty for things like eating etc. until I do get to a sink.

Use Bar Soap to do a better Job of Cleaning your hands. Most of us do Not spend enough time washing our hands or even all parts of our hands. 2 to 3 minutes if I remember right and bar soap Usually causes people to wash longer according to studies verses liquid.
.....Bar soap is also cheaper and will last longer if put back into a dry area to well dry. Used to be able to find soap dish with a strainer built in but unable to so far. Anyone finding one please let me know.
Hand sanitizer tends to work better for a lot of people because a lot of people do not wash their hands correctly

Soap and water is always great, but it's not going to be everywhere and thus, isn't super convenient. Hand sanitizer is 100x better than just water or nothing at all.
