Shillingbury Tales was a British television sitcom comedy-drama series made by ATV for ITV and broadcast 1980-81. Audio taken from the 7" single released in May 1981.
Memories....memories...memories ...when ever i hear this, it reminds me of when ATV lost their itv franchise to broadcast, long summers of the very early 1980s, end of tiswas and the gap between childhood and growing up... still makes me feel very nostalgic hearing this....
ATV did not lose its licence; they were asked by the IBA (on conditions of actually keeping their franchise) that they were to have the midlands split into two geographical areas covering east and west, with the Elstree studios being sold along with half of its shares being placed on the open market and control taken away from its parent company ITC and renaming itself Central Independent Television. The Elstree studios were later bought by the BBC where EastEnders was filmed. Did you also know that Aldbury was also used for Midsomer Murders?
@@christopherwilliams2093 I thought ATV Network Ltd created a shell company called ATV Midlands Ltd, and that's the comany that bid for and won the new dual region East and West Midlands franchise, but ATV Midlands Ltd had to rename itself Central Independent Television (but it used the on-screen name Central). Effectively then, ATV Network Ltd lost the franchise and ATV Midlands Ltd aka Central Independent Television won the franchise.
@@jane1975 Ok then, if ATV & Central were basically the same company, how come they lost the rights to the pre 1982 material, because any ATV clips until a few years ago, when various sales & mergers brought ATV / ITC material back under the same ITV Studios banner as Central, when shown post 1982, the on screen credit was ITC Entertainment, then Polygram, even for the old VT stuff as well, never ATV?
@@Westy1971 "In 1982, ATV was restructured and rebranded as Central Independent Television, under which name it continued to provide the service for the Midlands." ATV and Central are one and the same company only rebranded, and the rights to broadcast the archives of ATV are no longer able to be shown because they belong to another company including logo. czcams.com/video/oNbbUSNmNGQ/video.html - great documentary series on ITV [ Midlands episode ].

I remember this programme on Sunday evenings on ITV when I was a kid. When the series ended, I looked for Shillingbury on a map, and couldn't find it. Was Shillingbury a real place, or just a made-up name for the series?
Shillingbury was a fictional place. The series was actually filmed in a small village called Aldbury, near Tring in Hertfordshire. There is a very small Facebook Group for fans of the series.
brings backs so many memories albury and ashridge monument we visited from watford. It was one of the only places in Hertfordshire that was in the central region because of the Chiltern escarpment. Central covered it from Birmingham until the south edition in 1989 from Abingdon but was still crap.

@@TumbleTower No, it was just a rebrand as apposed to losing its licence to broadcast.

Adored this show when I was a kid. Even visited Aldbury this August where it was filmed.
great idea mate I was thinking about that going to the place where it was filmed
Actually the programme was presented for the ITV network by ATV but actually it was produced for ITC by the Inner Circle production company.

I also think that The Shillingbury Tales was ITV's answer to the BBC's To The Manor Born in many respects
Aldbury was also featured in The Dirty Dozen
