  • William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was an American impressionist artist and is the subject of this 25-minute documentary film produced in 1987 by the National Gallery of Art. The film highlights Chase's years at Shinnecock, on Long Island, New York, where in 1891 the artist established the first important outdoor summer school of art in America. Images of Chase's paintings along with archival photographs--including shots of the artist's studios--are interwoven with footage of the hills and beaches at Shinnecock and of Chase's house and studio as they are today.
