Charlie is actually a jazz piano major. he's been studying jazz since he was 10. Also went to Berklee. I'm not into his music but I'm a fan when he jams on the piano and is not doing his particular type of pop. Don't get me wrong, I love pop music, I just find his oversaturated, strictly made for sales. It's my opinion. He can do much better pop music like so many have, specially with his talent.

You can be trained and learn to break down and analyze music, even replicate it, but getting the same "feel" is pretty hard. Went to school with him, had brunch with him a few times. The dude's talented. People probably don't know he attended a famous jazz school on a full-ride, if not a presidential scholarship, on piano. He comes from money, so I'm sure that helps, but he's a great producer, mix engineer, and player... that's always been the case. Look at who did the work on Attention... it's him. Look at who else does work on their songs... it's a lot of people. He collaborates for sure, but he's always been a more-than-self-sufficient and autonomous enough of a producer/musician/player. Whether you like pop music or his style or image is another story.

I have followed Charlie since he appeared on Ellen years ago. I was drawn to him immediately because he had been bullied throughout his younger life and music became his life. Every song he ever covered was better than the original artist releasing it. His mom taught him piano early on and his talent earned him his scholarship, not "coming from money" as written above. He was born music and as a pianist myself have so much admiration for everything he ever touches. I love his jazz training and natural ability to surprise us with those chords in his current music.
