  • Ashok is sharing how he believes he can use artificial intelligence to scale personalized learning. He used AI to build Jill Watson, an AI teaching assistant and none of the students noticed.
Ashok K. Goel is a Professor of Computer Science and Cognitive Science in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. He is Director of the School's Ph.D. Program in Human-Centered Computing, Coordinator of the faculty consortium on Creativity, Learning & Cognition, and Co-Coordinator of the faculty consortium on Interactive Intelligence. He is Director of the School's Design & Intelligence Laboratory and a Co-Director of Georgia Tech's Center for Biologically Inspired Design.

Ashok conducts research into human-centered computing, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, with a focus on computational design, discovery, and creativity. The goals of his research are to understand human creativity in conceptual design of complex systems as well as scientific problem solving, to develop interactive tools for aiding people in such creative tasks, and to invent computational systems that are themselves creative.

It's awesome to have been part of Dr. Goel's class last semester where Jill was first deployed. I felt like I got to witness a historical event in computing first hand. Go OMSCS!

I was in one of the later semesters when we knew she was there but not which one. Was very fun -- and a really fantastic course in general.

It seems everyone has disconnects in thinking. An AI that can conclude what our disconnections in thinking are by asking questions and then helping us plug these gaps would be awesome. It would almost be an alternative to traditional quizzing.

We've been wondering if Jill had made an encore appearance this term. I have some suspicions...

Did this mean jill has passed the turing test?

I was wondering the same, but then I realized the setting was not as that of a run of the Turing test. There is not a human counterpart whose behaviour a judge - who is a aware there is a human and a machine pretending to be human - compares Jill's behaviour to. That is, no one knew it was an intelligent agent and thus "caught" her - no one knew it could happen.

This could work for college but not primary school. Those kids can’t read or write yet
