Johnny loved Richard. If you see where Richard came on Carson after his injury, you can see how much Johnny loved him and how much the crowd loved him too.
I was told that these old Tonight Show tapes never made it. That they weren’t transferred from the old style film, but I guess they managed to save a few clips! Excellent! Richard Pryor wearing a suit, how cool!
Hi Joe. Lots of these come from rich folks who could afford home video recording equipment in the mid to late '60's.
@@keithhyttinen8275 This is from a B&W film kinoscope so most likely filmed for Armed Forces overseas
@@keithhyttinen8275 that makes sense, thank you very much!
@@joshburdick2464 thank you!
@@keithhyttinen8275 There was no video in the 60s, not for home. There was 8 and 16mm film for home. These postings are kinescopes - films shot from a camera pointing to the video monitor as the show played in real time. Quite a few kinescopes of old TV exist. 📺
Love it how Richard makes johnny laugh so hard every time he on johnny show ❤❤❤
I've never seen Johnny Carson belly laugh so hard. It was amazing to see Richard Prior doing a routine at such a young age. Much respect to both legends.
"He's a relatively new commedian". Wow! This is history in the making.
Love seeing Johnny laugh that hard
fake laugh , tho
You can see his true love for good comedy.
I love you Richard and I love you Johnny. I was so lucky to be alive when you were here. Miss you both very much.
To the end of Rich's life you could ALWAYS tell how much love and respect Johnny had for him. The shows after Rich's "accident" are REALLY touching television.
He seems to be a changed man after that. I think that was about the same time he quit drugs.
I love that episode and have watched it several times. You are correct.
It’s a shame that that late night shows now are not even worth to watch. Thank CZcams for this epic clip!
Or at the least, thank the person who uploads these videos. 😁
I've never seen johnny uncontrollably laugh.
Thanks for posting.
Absolutely love these early clips...more please!
This is absolute comedic brilliance
I didn’t remember seeing Richard as a young man. What a treat to see him. He is certainly missed.
Richard Pryor was and will always be hilarious.
Unbelievable how early the love and genuine laughter between Mr. Carson and Mr. Pryor! Their comedic go-between is legendary 🙌 👏 ❤
One of my favorite comedians of all time. Loved Richard Pryor. So glad to see this early episode.
Funny when he’s clean, funny when he’s dirty. He was destined to be great.
There's just a "handful" of guests that were able to make Johnny crack up like that, but the way Richard carried on, wit his straight face and not knowing what the hell hi was going to say, was such special talent.
Yeah, there were just a select few. Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Jonathan Winters, Martin short, Buddy Hackett, and a few others.
@Joe Biggs and we can't forget Robin Williams, whom I guess would be up there with Jonathan Winters.
@@robertocucalon4676 Righto! He used to call Jonathan Winters Papa Bear. 😁
@@joebiggs4387 rodney dangerfield
@@DistantLights Yes! How could I forget Rodney?! 😆
WOW! Richard Pryor pushing the envelope back in this era of early Johnny Carson Tonight show! Still at in black and white! What a funny man was Richard Pryor! Rest in peace, sir! You left a great legacy of fabulous funny jokes and movies and stand up comedy!
To the folks at Carson- thank you for doing this. I trust that the process of digitizing the tapes of these kinescopes have been both a thrill and a pill- but, more so a thrill. Anything from pre-1972 is always welcome- a window to the past.
I miss Richard Pryor , he would bury the foolish crap going on today it would be epic !!!!!
LOVE HIM!!! ❤❤❤❤
So wise of NBC to destroy nearly all of the 1962 to 1972 Tonight Show tapes. They reused them to record some crappy sitcoms that no one remembers.
ABC did the same thing with the daytime soaps. You can find very rare episode or scenes before 1978.
Sarcasm, I presume.😂
Im sure back then you would have known the future and saved them.
You would have been wiser than all the major networks
@@scotwirth6228 nope they were hauled out to a land fill site and bulldozed
The same thing happened to a lot of Classic Football games during the sixties Early seventies I guess they were on a Tight budget
That's as hard as I've seen Johnny laugh. Awesome!
I had no idea they knew each other THAT long! Thanks.
Richard should have been nominated best supporting actor, as "PIANO MAN," in Lady Sings The Blues, with Diana Ross!! GENIUS!!!!😅😅😅
Delightful performance, by the late great legend of comedy Richard Pryor... I miss comedians like Mr. Pryor.
For me the sad part of this I can remember staying with my grandparents the summer of 68 and they watched Johnny every night....but they only got one shot at this and would never see it again ... now I have watched this 60 times and I still laugh every time...Will never forget them laughing down stairs at Johnny as I was only 9 years old and I had to go to bed but I would lay there and listen to them laughing...If they had a chance to watch this they would do it over and over ...Richard you were the man.. when you can break Carson up like this you knew you had arrived!!! R.I.P.
VERY well said! I watched this specific show in my family basement where I was, um, taking a few months off from my college "career" (7 years to get my 4 year degree...hey, it was the '60s!!). I was 19 going on 35...just didn't know it at the time. Wholly agree, R.I.P. both of 'em!!
Just shows that Pryor could do everything. Even jokes geared exclusively for parents, like here.
Carlin was the same...
@@patgalvez4563 Pryor and Carlin often at the top of best stand ups of all time. And even they're quite different in material too. Both legends. :)
What a GEM!!!! Thank you! This is GOLD!
Carson in NYC was definitely the coolest period.
Had no idea Pryor was from Peoria. I was born & raised in Rockford 1.5 hrs away.
Pryor was a Genius actor. Loved the movies that teamed him with Gene Wilder.
Two of my very favorite men.
Thanx so much for sharing!
I remember that Rumplestiltskin routine: My name is Rumplestiltskin, and I'm a meanie.
I even googled it, and could not find it.
So glad to see early Richard and Johnny again. So glad to see Richard and Johnny again.
RIP, darling gentle men, and thanx so so very much, for the magic, and memories.
The child in the adult. Pryor was able to find them. Brilliant.
Nice post... really cool seeing Richard Pryor so young. A treat
I used to watch Johnny Carson almost every night !!! 😘
I miss Richard Pryor so much ❤
This was true comedy! The stand up was not so funny, but Richard being Richard, was hilarious. Miss them both.
You got it exactly right.
Carson and Ed McMahon rarely had a back and forth conversation when guests were on (during the 70’s and 80’s). I haven’t seen many 60’s shows, I wonder if they did that more back then?
He was brilliant allready then....Love it....Rest in peace Richard ❤
Funny his first time on show till last show johnny was the best he Loved Richard
Very good. Mr. Pryor is superb. Tough stand up but, he makes it funny. Must know both, the play and, those "memorable" school plays. Boy, he is good. And later, he is better. Mr. Carson was thrown off the chair, almost. Wonderful time. Thanks.
Witnessing greatness
It's an absolute shame they don't have all of the early shows. Including the first show. I watched a lot of them as a kid sneaking up after everyone was asleep. I'd look in the TV guide to see when the comedians were on so I wouldn't miss it. I can't tell you how funny some of this early stuff was.
Yes, Johnny seemed much more energetic, just different somehow. Obviously he was younger but also before he became very wealthy.
Got to love Johnny Carson.
It's obvious, someday this guy is going to be, a real Fireball !
🔥😳🔥
🔥
Richard Pryor can be funny in his standup without the cuss words
Sure he can but he's hilarious when he does
Imagine Richard Pryor being that young and married !! OMGOODNESS ! What a funny video with no profanity neither ! R.I.P. Johnny,Ed And The King of Comedy Richard.
The stand up was so so but the sit down was as good as anything
pryor and carson… just too damn golden!
What a great find and thanks for posting this.
I gotta get me some of that Fiesta Ozite carpet for my porch and patio!
Wow talk about an early appearance.
Man he really loved Richard.
Man, I want some fiesta Ozite outdoor carpet with festive colors!
It's got VECTRA FIBER!!!
I’ve seen Johnny laugh that hard before, but not that many times. I still am able to recite his early material.
One of my favs “when I was in jail I made n-- laugh all day. Keep “dey” mind off da booty. N-- would have f-- me, you would have read about in Jet. It would have been the picture of the month. ‘Uh mr Pryor, would ya let the dick go now. We just want to sew it back on the body’”.
RIP.
His character impersonations were second to none.
These two had such chemistry and a great friendship
I appreciate this CZcams channel because it has allowed me to see more of this show than I was allowed when it was originally airing.
I would Love to know if anyone still has that flooring they advertised.
This is the best one I've seen yet.
Keep the GREAT vids coming .. reach for the bottom of the pile and bring out some MOre Unseen Full interview Jems From JOHNNY~~! THANX
Ive never seen Richard Pryor nervous...and he's VERY nervous.
Far from nervous for sure. Just so ya know.
Amazing! That skit on the school play is a phenomenal performance, seems like he was a natural from the beginning - or did he spend hours in his room perfecting these things I wonder?
LOvEd it. Fav PRYOR johnny interview
Yet another illustration that you can be what you want to be in this country, despite your skin color. Love it!
Rest in Peace Richard!
Practice your craft and get over public speaking fears. George Santos has proven to me that you can have whatever life you want if you can speak in front of people. Period.
I was 7 years old when this was on, I'm sure my parents watched.
History! Ed n Johnny's interaction here is interesting. They must have run out of things to talk about in the 70s and onwards as they refined and fine-tuned their show.
July 29th 1968...my 14th Birthday. It was a Monday.
Wow, what are the chances!
Before Johnny always took Monday off
@@toddmccreary4579 he took more than that off as time went by 😂
@@toddmccreary4579 He only worked three days a week starting sometime in the 80s. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. I think they ran the best of Carson on one of those days and of course a guest host on the other.
0:30 First joke: Pryor said first time in show business was in 1946. Well, he was born December 1, 1940.
Miss you Johnny.
This was during Pryor's "try to be Bill Cosby" phase. He talked about it in his book, "Pryor Convictions." Once he decided to be himself (no pun intended) he became one of the greatest comedians the world has ever seen. But even in this clip, you can see some of the real Rich peeking through. At 11:15 he starts to do a generic old wino voice, but within a few seconds, it morphs into the voice of Mudbone.
... What was the pun?
@@FIXTREME "Himself" was the title of Cosby's biggest selling album.
Everything is everything!
The band was banging
Birth of a genius,2 gods
You break up Johnny like that…and you’re in! Great job Mr. Pryor. It was his honest approach that cracked up Johnny over and over. Superb television.
Love it!
Brilliant!
I believe this is only the 2nd time Richard was on the Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson. At around 13:10- 13:11 into this video, you'll notice Johnny is lovingly staring at Richard while Richard begins another story. At that moment, Johnny seems to be realizing that young Richard, - is a genius. These two men ended up being great friends for about 30 years thereafter until they passed. The dozens of times Richard was on the Carson show, Johnny went out of his way to remind people how great Richard was before he came out on stage. Of course Richard was brilliant on stage. But you could easily sit, watch and listen to these two gentleman for hours. Johnny "sets up the pins", and Richard "knocks them down". They were both midwest guys and had that great connection ( They both passed away the same year in 2005 ).
I was 3yrs old when this was aired.
Go Ed! It's amazing but I can still remember a poem I recited in third grade. it was Longfellow.
Funny what the mind retains.
This is why the "racism" talk is bogus. Mr. Pryor did it on his own. Brilliant. What a great moment. Thanks for sharing.
What a legend
This was Richard the clean version of his show. Lol. Still funny.
He slayed..
Thank you
I recently read Nikki Sixx's Heroin Diaries book and he mentioned that his mother dated Richard Pryor like back in the late 60's early 70's pretty wild, can you imagine that scenario 😅
Go Martin !!
If I could go back to July 29th 1968 I would do things differently.
LOL @ I was living with a woman
I replayed that part over and over thinking I didn't hear it correctly. But I did apparently, I just don't get how it's hysterically funny, or funny at all. I mean, Richard's just saying last time he was on, he wasn't married, and living with some girl. So what's funny about that?
Pryor and Carson both died 2005..
Yep January and December.
Pryor was 15 years younger than Carson. Carson was born in 1925, while Pryor was born in 1940.
Coincidence, or the CIA snuffing out class act world famous comedians? Hm, I think the latter.
Crazy that Richard died in 2005. Seems like I vividly remember some special that was on TV called _'I'm not dead yet';_ all about Richard Pryor still being alive, yet most ppl thought he was long gone due to his condition. Just doesn't seem that long ago, but apparently it was.
Legend
Can you post the Oct 1 1970 episode?
Cracked out, long unrelatable stories, I wish I was a comedian in the 60s
👍
Hilarious
Jesus Love 2 U and all!!! :) ♥
I’ve read through a lot of comments and All great! But my question - WHO was the female guest on this show? I was 7 at the time 😂
👍👍👍🙂
Where can I pick up that Ozite outdoor carpet? I'd really like that Ozite outdoor carpet.
