You know she wants to scream
"easy for you!" He's an excellent teacher and she's very lucky.
Every note he plays is so dark and full, what an amazing sound
and all the notes on C-trumpet......great sound !
Also, he is not showing off, he is showing her *A* correct way to play it. Which is SUPER helpful. Music is an aural art. It is exceptionally helpful to have an audio "Crutch" to go of off. And to have that crutch be of a true master is priceless.
I’d use “model” rather than “crutch,” but I agree with you. We need to have a quality sound in our memory.
What an fantastic teacher. In watching these few minutes I've gained knowledge on how to be both a more effective teacher, player, and student. Hardenberger truly is brilliant.
I love Hakan's musical approach to solving problems. That's the way to do it.
when he set his trumpet on the stand it gave me shivers.
woah, i loved at the end when she combined everything he just told her, it all clicked! gave me chills
I love how at this end its all just clicks for her and she nails it.
While Mr. H is fantastic, let's add some respect for the accompanist, dear God! What a monster! Just jumps right in!
He's really on point - this is a piece for trumpet and piano, not trumpet with piano accompaniment: there's a difference. Reminds me of the story I heard James Galway tell about his audition for the principal flute position in the Berlin Phil in 1969. On the day of the audition he took his solo pieces (with their piano accompaniments) for a quick run through with the audition pianist whom he was meeting for the first time. Galway said the pianist rifled through the piano parts, looked at Galway and said in complete seriousness " what do you think this is, a piano audition? Can you not play something easier?"
I love the part where they're working on sound, she fraks and Hakan says "doesn't matter". Great lesson
Wow , I couldn't believe when I saw this ! My friend Liz Fitzpatrick who I played in Pennine Brass with . She kept that one quiet !
I love masterclasses. It is so humbling. She is an excellent trumpeter, but next to him, she has so much to learn.
the listening before concept is surely something every beginner must be taught ... no pre sound concept no note
Making every single note count 🎺🎵🎺👍🎵Stay on top of the note!👏👏👏
Incredible video. Really shows how attention to detail can make a big difference.
Having a very good ear for intonation is essential on any instrument if you are going to get even to a good amateur standard.
Some are born with this ability. For the rest it is a case of ear training.
Whilst the girl on the clip is very competent and can certainly play the notes, Hakan is teaching her the most important thing: MUSICALITY.
The acid test when playing a piece (or even a study) should always be "does this sound enjoyable or not?" It isn't an olympic sport, it's art.
So much yes.
wow.. he's a true master... even though I play saxophone, his sound.. and musicality really affected my playing/sound on the sax. Thanks for posting this!
Really brilliant teaching!
I come back to watch this every few years. I don’t play or even particularly like trumpet. But this is so enjoyable somehow 🤷♀️
It's always interesting how when you hear great brass players, every damned note, whatever the dynamic, has a beginning, a middle and an end.
wow what deep and singing sound he has on that trumpet!!!
My favorite pat of this video is when she misses the G and he says it doesn't matter. Awesome.
The video lags behind the audio
It's so fascinating to watch!
DIE FRAU SETZT DIE MUNDSTÜCK VIEL ZU HOCH, DA KANN KEIN GUTER TON KOMMEN. SIE DRÜCKT ZUVIEL DIE UNTERE LIPPE ! GRUSS LIEBER HAKAN !
Great stuff!! Great teaching !!

Great work!
Still one of my favorite musicians.
wow...Master Hakan in Action, exelent video...thanks
Gentelmen, I am sure Hakan is an outstanding performer, Of course there are many turmpet idioms and always one who stands out the most.
In jazz to name a few , Winston Marsalis , If you like screamers Maynard Ferguson and the best of two worlds Doc Severinsen, so you see is a matter of respect and admiration for those who perform the trumpet to their most of their habilities. They are all great in their way of playing so enjoy it .
so great, Hakan makes his C-trumpet sound much more soft and mellow than Elizabeths Bb trumpet.....fantastic !
amazing i would give anything to study with a master like this
I love the insights at 0:35.
Bohuslav Martinu: Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano (Student: Elizabeth Fitzpatrick)
Hakan's advice really made a great improvement in her sound. Great experience!!
I agree about Hakan's advice. He has the tone and technique right. She, on the other hand, does not really grasp what he is saying. But more importantly, she is either not listening or incapable of hearing the difference between her approach and Hakan's artistry. If you listen to the episode closely, you will discover that she did NOT actually improve. Hakan gave it his best shot, but she needs a LOT of work. She continually "cracks" her notes and has a sharp, inconsistent sound -- too choppy and brash. It is grating and tiresome to listen to. In contrast, I could listen to Hakan ALL DAY LONG. He is a great performer.
I would love and hate to have him as my teacher at the same time...
he uses expression to make the music musical!
we have to remember that in the presence of what we perceive as a superior player we all tense up!
É fato....estudar com Um Mestre é outra coisa....quer dizer....sempre que desejamos aprender algo o correto é procurar quem realmente tem conhecimento........isso faz toda a diferença.........parabéns...a todos os bons professores de trompete do Brasil.
The expression "rabbit caught in a cars headlights" springs to mind.Great post though.
Javivila he makes everything sound so easy..i must agree with you
thank you! it's very interesting!
Fabulous!!!I bought this DVD and Hakan is amazing.
He really lives the music, it's a grandmaster!!!
I'll hope that he comes to Spain sonn XD
Yes, wonderful
That was amazing control from Haken's horn
An attitude of ownership incomparably improves tone and phrasing.
very good technique,,,
GRANDE HAKAN!!
best part 2:45 *frack* ... "doesn't matter". such a pleasant teacher
Muito bom!
Hakan is the greatest !!!
that was great
Que maestro!!!!!!!!
His tone seems warmer. Is the C trumpet naturally that way, or is the warmth caused by his great technique and especially the glorious decrecsendoes (sp?) and perfect pitch??
Bb trumpet usually has the fatter sound. But, as you see here, it all depends on the player.
Hardenberger‘s C trumpet sound is just fantastic, while I do not like the student‘s Bb trumpet sound at all. It is brittle, unfocused, and flat, as if she had alerady been playing a long session before and was fatigued.
i like it alot they both are so good where could you get sheet music for that?
i realy like....
Very Good and important for all brass players, what's this piece??? Great
Where find the komplete Song played from Hakan Hardenberger??? ;-)) I love it!!!
Genius
For all that want to know this song its in the video.
0:13 till 0:17
master!
Good
what piece is this?? i really like it.
Bohuslav Martinů - Sonatine for Trumpet and Piano. Sheet music to be bought from Alphones LeDuc
That because its a C trumpet and playing it 1 and 2 makes it more in tune (Usually)!
@pfjefes I think so, yes! That's why I fully agree with you!
Never mind, I already worked it out :)
he plays his Es 1st and 2nd valve cool
@bassbonemexie he means that she is projecting so well that the sound is going out and coming back instantly hard to explain but thats the easiest way to put it
anyone know what the piece they are playing is?
What does he says at 6.14? " the xxxx is going that way, and the air is going that way" - what is that xxxx?
brother needs to know. if could help please post it! thanks!
man what i would give to have that sound.
You think so? Allison Balson turned out just fine....
Cual es el nombre de la pieza?
These masterclasses should be a thing of the past. They benefit only the ego and bank account of the "master".
Does anyone know what the name of the piece they are playing?
HINT : If audio is not syncronous to video (I had the same problem while watching it on youtube in the browser) try to download this video (e.g. real downloader, which worked for me ) and play it with a better player (e.g. VLC player ) The downloaded mp4 file is fine with VLC player.
thanks, i got throat and thought too already.. :)
What is the name of the song they are playing?
Advice at 3:57 worth the price of admission.
If I told my dad my trumpet was a piece of plumbing by tomorrow he might just take a piece of a it and use it to fix our sink.
@cadarst i think he hits the button on his sleeve.
6:10 the tut is going that way and the air is going that way?
Seems to be working...
In music it seems sometimes words just aren´t quite accurate... or it's difficult to explain what you mean... much better to hear what he means... no?
now was it necessary to tell us that first bit. Well i guess im jealous. Because i cant do that. Its peretty impressive
00:37
@smellslikemusic where are you seeing her nervous?
I dont' see the least bit of nervousness in her.
Face is relaxed. She's attentive, not nervous.
I know that dude!
music sheet? :D thanks
Crapping myself just watching this!
buena
Not sure what you mean. I would assume he knows this piece by heart anyway.
4:32
There isn't only one way to teach.
3:45 about real listening
the thought
Alright so help me out here, when playing, you should be able to sound like your almost singing the piece? You play the beats but at the same time it sounds as if you singing it...
What's The Name Of The Music
Sonatine - B. Martinu
haha... one is using C trumpet one is using B flat, Hakan transpose at sight!!!
i'd hope he could do that. lol but he is probably also sight reading it.
my freshman year of wind ensemble in college required me to play on C trumpet. and I had no C trumpet, lol and i had to borrow my professors rotary C trumpet and learn all the pieces of my music transposing Bb to C on Carmina Burana! it was a nightmare but became fluid after one semester i was able to transpose sight reading. Its actually pretty easy compared to others lol
It's in C. Every good musician needs to know how to play in C.
starwarsjunkie7777
en jazz on s en fout !!!et il y a des bons trompettes!!trompette classique c est comme les militaires!!garde a vous!!!
starwarsjunkie7777 Yea, how to, but not reading directly. My teacher sits in one of Sweden's best symphony orchestra and he tried to transpose a quite hard piece directly and failed quite hard. He definitely can transpose easy pieces but not when it become more complex. Why would he btw?
I wonder what this guy would say about Ole Edvard Antonsen.......I think he would become the pupil.
