    A legendary performance of Firth Of Fifth from Genesis in their prime!
    Genesis In Concert 1974 Selling England tour 2DVD collector's item set. Firth Of Fifth was recorded live at Montreal Quebec, Canada April 20th, 1974 Some missing sequences were edited in from other venues to create the song in it's entirety.
    Similar to what we did with the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and with 2014 being the 40th anniversary of Selling England By The Pound we've patched all the missing parts of the remastered version of the Montreal 1974 footage with scenes from short amateur & pro-shot video clips of shows filmed in other parts of the world to make the very first entire Selling England by the Pound concert with all songs in full. Again I think you'll enjoy the results.

    For those wondering why Genesis stopped playing the piano intro live:
    Taking a grand piano on tour only for that fragment was too costly. Banks used an RMI Electra-Piano 368 electric piano but this instrument had 2 important limitations. First of all its keyboard was not sensitive to velocity or pressure, when you pressed a key it was like an On/Off switch, so he could not apply any dynamics to the playing.
    Secondly it had only 68 keys which is 20 keys less than a standard 88-keys grand piano, so the intro could not be played entirely as it had been recorded in studio, some of the notes had to be transposed. They tried it however in the first gigs of the 1974 tour but Tony was not happy with the sound. On top of it once he forgot about the transposing and ran out of keys while playing, to the surprise of the rest of the members of the band. Phil Collins saved the situation giving the intro to the multi-intrumental section of the song. After this they decided to drop the intro.
    By the time newer instruments solved the limitations of the RMI (such as the Yamaha CP-70 which Tony used from then on), Genesis was already changing style and repertoire.
    Actually this is one of the many curiosities you will find in my book "The Musical Instruments of Progressive Rock"

      Same goes for The Floyd. Everybody talks about Roger's lyrics and David's vocals and guitar playing, and again, not without reason. But... Richard's keyboards...

Banks begged him to stay many times, but PG became the star of the group with his antics,so he went the way his ego guided him...that is what I gather from documentary about Genesis, btw, after the Beatles ( which are in a league of their own), in my taste of music comes: Genesis, Pink Floyd, Who, Alan Parsons,and the Eagles...Shalom, and be well

      The electric piano he had for touring was a bit rubbish, seems like he could have found one that sounded better. But it was 1974, maybe there weren’t any that sounded more like real pianos then.

    • @adolforodolfo6929
      @adolforodolfo6929 Před 2 lety +1

      @@MDK2_Radio Absolutely right. In 1974 the only way you could have something that sounded like a real piano on stage was to have a real piano. Some bands did it; ELP, and Jethro Tull certainly did, but it's a big thing to transport and horribly complicated to mike up - and Genesis didn't have anything like the kind of money that ELP and Tull had. I think Tony does a pretty good job here with an electric piano that doesn't have any dynamics at all. It's the reason that Tony stopped playing the piano intro live - he felt that he couldn't do it justice with the instruments/technology available at the time. Roger King does play it live because (a) he has the equipment to do that and (b) he has all of Tony Banks chops - more probably.

Take every album in where he’s a front man from “ From Genesis to revelation “ up to “the lamb lies down on Broadway 🎭 and realize what I mean . That’s the reason Phil Collins could not replace him after his departure from the band on May 1975 . No offense, but his good ( Phil ) only in drumming.
