If you have a Windows desktop computer and you want to use a spare laptop as a second screen, you can do that and in this video I’ll show you how.

"Extend Display" was what I was looking for. Thank you.
I'm glad you found the video helpful.
I am sure millions of people like me must be trying to find the solution to laptop as a secondary monitor.
Thank you very much for this well-delivered tutorial, Sir.

Thanks for this! I work from home and my work laptop's screen kicked the bucket, but the rest of the machine still works. I used my Nintendo Switch HDMI cable to use my TV as a temporary display, but now that I have the HDMI to USB converter I can use my personal laptop as the screen for my work laptop

Have you observed the latency ?
@@dhruvakumar6964 yes it has quite a bit of lag but if the goal is just to manage then it works fine, you get used to the latency after a while
dude you are exteremely awesome i searched million videos and finally i found u

Hi, found your video while troubleshooting. for context, my monitor broke down, so I had to use my laptop as a primary monitor for my pc in the meantime. I had success using OBS but unfortunately, there's a significant amount of input lag when I do use the laptop as a monitor. got any tips or workarounds?
thank you, it helped!

Do you need a video capture card to translate to USB, or could you just go directly into the laptop via HDMI?
HDMI ports on laptops and desktops just send a signal out, they don't accept a signal in, so yes, you need the video capture card to turn the HDMI signal into a format the computer can accept as an input.
is there any update to this method?
I am trying to connect laptop as extra display to windows 11 but thru CABLE
What if it doesn't work? Trying to set it up for a friend, but it just won'T detect the second monitor and won't extend!
I had the same problem. Try plug the capture card into the laptop alone first, then connect the hdmi. I connected the hdmi to capture card and then into the usb, this didnt work.
is there any fix for the delay problem ?
thank you, Its works but I cant see my cursor on my laptop when I bring a window down to laptop. Why? have tried to in mouse settings but nothing seems to work.
Hello when setting this up would you always go through the same long process each time you turn on your laptop or computer or no? Ive been wanting a second monitor for cheap and i happen to have a laptop i rarely use
Each setup is different. Some laptops recognize the second monitor when started up and some don't. Try it out on your setup and hopefully you will get lucky with it.
nice video. can you also do this using a old chrome book touch screen and put onto windows so the chrome works as second monitor? Can I purchase a USBC to HDMI cable all in one?
I don't know if Chromebooks support external webcams. If they do, it may be possible if they have an app that will display the external webcam. You need the video capture device to convert the video signal on the HDMI cable to a webcam input signal. There may be ones that offer a USB-C instead of a USB-A. A simple adapter won't work because it won't convert the signal, it is meant for HDMI output.
does this have any lag or delay? I work in music production so I need the screen to be as fast as in my primary monitor
I expect it will have more lag than a monitor connected directly to the computer as it has to perform the extra step of converting the signal from HDMI to USB and display it on screen. For most people the lag isn't noticeable but for your purpose even a very slight delay may be more than you can accept. You'd have to test it on your own equipment to be sure.
Most of the cards online are full of false advertising. Even if they claim 4k, 60FPS, 99% are locked to 1080p 30FPS. There will be lag if you buy a lower end card. You'd be better off getting a second monitor. Because good ones like Elgato just cost as much as a budget IPS monitor (which is larger btw). If you have to use the laptop no matter what, just buy a decent card. Because I feel really sick switching from 120 to something like 30, it is beyon painful to look at.
if we connect One laptop to another using HDMI, can some other person identify whether we can connected to some external device, any popups populated like Your device connected etc...
so when you duplicate the content of the desktop computer to the laptop, can you control the screeen using the laptop? or you can just control the screen using the main source which is the desktop computer? please reply :( i really need it for my grade 3 class.
When you duplicate the desktop on the laptop, the laptop can't control the desktop screen. The laptop is just showing the desktop screen, the two computers are not interacting with each other any more than just displaying the screen image. Hope that helps. If you let me know more details of what you are trying to do for the class perhaps I can offer a solution that works for what you need.
now the real question is - what is the cheapest capture card on aliexpress that supports 1080p60hz realtime
I dont have that icon in camera
Hello. My pc does not detect my laptop. Hdmi port and cable are both ok. Did try with another monitor and it worked. But not with my laptop. Can someone help? I wanted to use my laptop as 2nd monitor for my pc
Are you able to use a hd60 capture card?
I believe that you can. You don't need that high end of a capture device but if you have one already then it should work.
Ok
Can i do this to use my windows laptop as a monitor for my mini mac?
I don't see why that wouldn't work. If the Mac mini has an HDMI port or you can add one via a hub, you should be able to take that output into a windows laptop and view it as shown in the video. Let us know if you try it and if it works.
May i ask, can this applicable for monitor is in windows 7, while laptop in windows 10?
I am not sure. I am not sure what webcam support Windows 7 has. If it does support webcams then this could work.
Does it work laptop to laptop? Instead of a desktop computer?
Yes it does. Here's my video on using a laptop as a second screen for another laptop: czcams.com/video/gxJJiR_jg_I/video.html
is there a way to do this with out using a camera app
You need some way to display the video that is coming in from the video capture device that the computer thinks is a webcam. I have a page on my website that will display a webcam if that helps. I demonstrate it in this video on using an iPad for a second screen: czcams.com/video/aTixrD4dfCA/video.html
OBS studio should work fine
Could it be worked as a triple monitor laptop?
I would think so. As long as you had two HDMI outputs from the primary computer each one can go to a separate laptop, giving you a total of three screens. You may need to use adapters to give you the extra HDMI outputs from the primary computer.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide through the app?It is very nice to have your reply.Thank tou so much
Each of the two additional laptops would run the Webcam Viewer app to display their own monitor. For each laptop the primary computer would have an HDMI cable running to a video capture card which makes each laptop its own monitor. The primary computer sees its own screen plus two external screens. Hope that helps.
@@ThinkOutsideTheSlide That's great!Thank you so much for your clearly instructions video and for your time for my request!!
does it still connect if i'm not connected to wifi?
Connecting the two devices is independent of wifi, so it will still work if you don't have wifi.
Soooo I did all the steps and I'm just getting a black screen. Anyone know what's wrong?
Can i use hdmi to hdmi
No. An HDMI port is only HDMI Out or HDMI In, they don't handle both directions. A computer only has an HDMI Out port.
Does it have lag??
Yes, it will have more lag than a regular wired monitor.
Do you reply
