Still my favorite game of all time. The last palace was so intimidating. The unique music really helped give it that epic last stand feeling.
Yeah. Agree totally.
This castle is a fucking nightmare
Yep. Great way to finish off a really hard game
I wonder if they ever considered having Thunderbird as the last boss in the game, then decided "nah, we gotta do better than that".
And that’s how Z2 became an underrated masterpiece
@@pacogonzalez952casually replying to a 15 year old comment is crazy
My older brother beat this game at age 7 in 1990. Legendary gamer.
Ahhhhh replaying 0:00 - 0:04 over, and over, and over, and over.....memories.
That sound effect when the barrier is lifted? I loved that “accomplishment, you have arrived” feeling! The music is lit as F on the golden palace!
@@Panthorius Yup, exactly! Engraved in my mind.
Just getting to the damn palace was hard enough. This game didn’t pull any punches for sure.
Yeah it's a really cool sound effect. On the money. But I tried so many times to get through the barrier when not lifted. Died every time! Lol.
Back 2005 I played this. At 4am. It felt great.
Kids nowadays wouldn't be able to figure any of this out, but a lot of us did it when we were like 6 years old. Gaming's greatest generation. Imagine a 6 year old beating this game, that's a lot of us.
Low health and practically no magic. You are a Fearless Beast!
Great palace indeed
my favourite part of this dungeon was losing all my lives on the lizard wall/fish bridge before i even arrived
beat this a ton of times...still love it to this day. great palace music is stuck in my head forever. i beat shadow link legitimately once...that was enough for me.
I could never even get TO the boss on this level. Good GOD was this game hard.
It took me a while, but I eventually did it :)
@@mathewhorodner2000 Same for me
It’s not only hard but just not intuitive, it’s linear but also the game doesn’t really tell you much, honestly I think if they were to remake this game now, they would definitely give you some idea as to where to go. I played this game for like 30 minutes and had no idea what I was doing or where to go.
@@JustJamesNotJerry it’s a big Palace Jim. What’s you expect?
@@bradhedgehog12 no I’m just talking about the game in general, of course the final palace will be hard.
That awful moment when you must break the blocks with the blue knights...
Even the valley of death without fairy was easier
I could never beat Thunderbird.
Found out later in life that using Reflect made it easier.
I remember watching my dad hack the game by going back and forth between screens and killing enough blobs and flying heads to fill his magic and life.
And as an adult, I do the same thing to this day. Amen Father.
Heck, I did the exact same thing when I played this game back in the day. Especially in the last dungeon!
Attacking the Great Palace with only 7 Attack and 7 Magic... Bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off.
0:00 me arriving and clocking in at 4am for my 11 hour shift haha
I remembered having a hard time going through this confusing maze of a palace, never reaching the boss room.
Heard the palace music elsewhere and it just didnt sound right without the elevator sounds and a sword clashing against random walls so I looked for a play through and wasnt disappointed , thanks !
Oh, I am happy to see i didn't disappoint.
So many memories of my childhood...
Back in the old school age of gaming, when the end credit names of each employee had more pixels and definition than the actual game itself.
Aerix, I am totally calling on EXTREME luck in this video. This is seriously one of the best side scrolling games I've played. Everything blended so well from the level up system to the small quests for spells and such.
15 years...
well, it's understandable, congrats on a spectacular playthrough of this temple
Holy toledo!!! That was freakin AWESOME. I have never seen the Golden Palace (as my brothers and I called it) beaten! We tried our whole childhoods!!!!! Even WITH game genie, we all crapped out on the last one. AMAZING. Good job!
@KungVanargand thank you so much for the praise! this is practically one of the best zelda 2 vids that seem to really appeal to everyone.
My entire life I thought you had to use Spell and Thunder on the flying bird guy at the end. I guess it’s just Thunder. Feel like my world has been rocked.
That palace run was great
explore more? watching this makes me want to play it again. :P glad i showed you something you didn't know.
After castle 5,castles became so confusing and big that without guide i would never past them.Thank you for showing me a way.
The palace that looks like it was made out of pez candies.
Man. I can never forget this. It was hard as heck. But I did it
complete all the palaces. set the stone is the last room of each palace.
"to break the seal, crystals must must be placed in statues in six well guarded palaces"
i mean haven't you seen the intro to the game?
Nice run ratix!
Well, I wouldn't call breaking bricks "exploring."
And it seems like I had found that magic jar before, but I must have forgotten about it somehow.
The Atlas which I thought was of great importance allowed me to dream about beating this game. Study the Atlas my son.
Got this game in 1988. Finally beat it in 2018. I don’t think there was a year in that time span where I didn’t play as far as I could.
hahahahaha. Ouch!
Brilliant.
I think I forgot or never did that statue-elevator-chopping trick until you get the bottle.
I was impressed by everything in this video except the Dark Link Battle, did you have to use the left corner trick
The last magic bottle is in the dead end of the hidden village. Use lightning magic. You missed it.
*****
It has been forever ago sense I played it.
My mistake.
The design of this place reminds me a lot of the World 8 Fortress level from Super Mario Bros. 3
what a god awful level... thanks nintendo for ruining my hopes and dreams of completing this game as a child... Thankfully I gave it another shot and did finish it.
That jump Magic is sorely missed imagine having it in the later the games
Ahh the memories
Oh the magical flying beam from the sword when you attacked with full health, where did that go, it was very nice XD
I beat this when I was 6, and as an adult I asked myself how the hell did I do it. I'm doing a play through currently on the switch nes, and added a no save states rule. the 3rd palace blue iron knuckle is what separates the boys from the men lmao
Me and my younger brother he was 4/5 and I was 7/8 we beat it back in the summer of '88. Then we had a huge competition who could run through it the fastest.
@@paulharris5451 Amazing
Rebonack was a snap for me, but I beat this game when I was around ten or eleven though. Currently having replayed it though, I found it much easier to get each item before defeating the bosses and placing the crystals, so eventually I could get the magic key, so I could go back to each palace and not have to worry about those stupid doors. I could also score up on all the experience points before heading back to each palace, so I would not have to worry about all those high experience points. As I just found out, you do not need all at level 8 to get through the Great Palace, but since some spells are needed to defeat the final bosses, having all those experiences is not that bad of an idea.
impressive man!
Excellent run. Seeing how little HP/MP you had arriving at the palace, I was sure you were going to do it in several lives.
I'm at Barba in palace 6 right now. Any tips on beating him before he fireblasts me into the lava?
I hope you beat it by now 😃
when i saw the curtains at 4:00 i thought im at the boss already!?
Question: why does thunderbird drop a key if there is no door to unlock?
It's been over 12 years, I think it's about time you get an answer.
I don't think the reason is confirmed, but after reading a forum, I think the reason why Thunderbird drops a key is to save programming time and space (time and space.. lol)
Those Bird Knights are bad ass!! I want one!!
Yeah they really are. The blue ones are bad assy and frightening.
Excellent run. Zelda II is a very hard game, makes Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan seem like a piece of cake.
@Ronso158 actually all the chickens are a cakewalk instead of running i now fight them.
The giant blob is so funny. 😃
I can see both the appeal (besides it being part of the franchise) as well as why it wasn't popular.
this video was made using dosbox and nesticle a very long time ago. dosbox recorded the video at the nes resolution or whatever the default resultion for nesticle. its so clear because thats how dosbox records.
X
did you know you can abuse the random encounters to skip those tough spots?
Lol @ lowering the bed curtains at the end... you just know he's tapping that :P
This is a good video! As a Zelda fan, I believe this is the best Zelda game out there.
A Link To The Past is the best in my book, but this game is right up there.
I agree. I was astounded at how much hate this game gets. It’s very challenging and HARD, but not unfairly hard. I beat it a few times waaayyy back in the early 90s on the original NES, and just beat it again yesterday, for the first time in decades, on the NES classic console.
@@duffyjohnson77 It amazes me too! It is sad to me that so people are under the impression that this game has always been universally hated, despite it being received rather well when it was released! It's probably from all the people out there that need the games to hold their hands, that people don't like the NES titles. I think their a blast! Neither of them would be anywhere close to the bottom of my list, if I were to rank all of the Zelda games.
@dahbombman gotta do something while going down the elevators
At 4:34 there was another invisible wall to the left leading to a red potion room like the first one you came across earlier.
hey there nice vid!! its helped me alot and now im able to get to Thunderbird but still havent been able to beat it. almost there tho!
Rip Stevens of you have left over magic after casting thunder, jump, and shield cast reflect. that should somewhat have the fire that thunderbird shoots be blocked by your shield
ratix98 Thanks for the tip! i didnt know that reflect helps against fireballs. i raised my magic to level 8 and am bout to give it another try tonight!
ratix98 just beat it bro! Dark link killed me with my last life and i thought i had to beat thunderbird again but thankfully just went to dark link. thanks again for all the help cant believe it! i thought id never.
ratix98 Yeah man it was the missing thing! After so many year , i finally finish this game. thanlx!!!
I was always very nervous to enter the final castle in Zelda 2. Even though I quickly became more or less a master of beating the game, which some deem difficult to my surprice. Tried many times to force the energy barrier here without setting all the stones - never worked lol
Ironically i found the road to the Great Palace harder than the actual palace. Sure the bird knuckles were scary as fuck but it's all about Dark Link, even the thunderbird ain't shit if you use the jump spell, Dark Link's really tough...unless you use the crouch technique like a dumb baby.
i used to duke it out with dark link for a long time. it would be more spectacular in the end if i wasn't so pressed for time my limit is only 10 minutes.
Thank you I can get through every other palace but this one kills me every time.
I use to jump attack him all the time to beat him but that was a very awesome trick!
I don't think I ever knew about that magic jar in the block at the very end.
That would be very very useful.
Indeed
Man this palace is full of fire breathing and armored Chickens LOL! BUCKAW!
hey ratix98,you were really lucky with that blue hawk knight where you had to pass through the blocks by breaking em.
If that hawk knight had jumped on you instead, you would have taken quite a chunk of health.
i actually did all the palaces. although the downthrust to the dragon when he comes up works wonders.i think its about having luck though
WTF!?!?! You made that look extremely easy! I spent hours trying to get past thunderbird. I wonder why they made shadow link easier.
@ratix98 you beat the hardest dungeon in zelda 2 and quite possibly the hardest dungeon in the whole legend of zedla series in 10:00 mins, congrasts cause the foes in this place are harder than most bosses in the game, and the palace is one big maze,no one big labyrinth, those bird-like foes are just like iron knuckes except they jump, deal imperssive dmg and fire beams, it likely you'll die alot in this place and start thing nightmare over, make sure all stats are maxed, even when maxed it very hard
So I need the Squirtle Squad and a Raichu. Got it!
Left wall trick? COME ON I WANTED AN EPIC MATCH *Sniffle*
First time I realized the Chickens would follow me I freaked the hell out!
Yeah I get stressed seeing them even now.
@acuidad its hard to do things in 10 mins or less especially when its the final palace. twas a good run :)
@dannecah cast thunder when he comes on screen
@kimonji thats only if you got game over though right?
So... who wants to make this on Mario Maker? I don't have the game yet but damn am I planning to make this... hopefully.
I don't think this dungeon could fit in the size of a Mario Maker level
@ratix98 The game is hard if you don't know what you are doing.
I've beaten the game 1 or 2 times so i know what to do.
One problem in this game is knowing where to go,if you get lost in the great palace, you are screwed.
I wonder besides the first palace, if you didn't get the candle, would other palaces be dark (like the caves are) I haven't ever tried it.
Yes, its essential you have the candle i think even the trek through disvalley is dark and not fun
I don't even know where he's going.... it just looks like hes walking around aimlessly..
ha, who doesn't like the music for the last palace? in fact its very different and i was happy that the last palace was a different piece of music.
4:25 Is that a freaking Gaster Blaster?
I remember when I was a kid playing this game on the NES. I loved it, shame it gets such a bad rap now. But damn it was brutal, especially this last dungeon. I'd get through all of it many times only to get stopped cold by Shadow Link time and time again. I didn't know the trick to beating him. He's almost impossible unless you stand in the corner like that. But somehow, I got through basically everything else in the game without really any guides. I have no idea how I managed. I doubt most gamers today could get through it without looking up walkthroughs (including myself).
This game really does not deserve all the crap it gets. I still rank this game very high on my list of favorite NES games. And yeah, beating Dark Link the first time was a real accomplishment for sure.
when the gate opens, it sounds like the super uppercut by little mac dont it?
i think the FDS version did that to you. which is the japan release of the game. if you are from europe and you can continue from the palace then both the US and Europe release of the game allowed it.
I remember that I would wait with setting all the stones in all the 6 palaces and set them only when I was ready to go into the final castle - but I don't remember why!?! Collecting extra-lives or what? Please remind me!
Heh, Awesome!
never played this game cause I didn't have the NES... but this looks hard af
Lillyz It is VERY hard, but it is worth the effort!
The giant blue Blob
The best
I thought you needed ALL attack, magic and life at experience #8, to get entrance.
Nope! All 6 stones must be in place at all palaces to gain entrance
@@ratix98 I was mistaken for all these years then. That is good to know, thanks, but knowing that Thunderbird requires the spell thunder to beat it, and reflect is greatly recommended, you might need all the spells, and shield for Link's Shadow, though I guess you can beat it otherwise, but I would still pick up all the spells and items before entering the Great Palace.
Does that little old man in red near the end just before Dark Link appears have a name?
I don't think he has a name. He is only known as "sage"
Always wondered about him lol.
He's probably the Tom Bombadill of this story.
Those blue jumping knights were sure difficult! Still now 35 years later stressing me to see them chase Link!!! It was so damn stressing. The worst adversary in the whole game.
so you had to AVOID the bird knights? geez, that makes a lot more sense
Well, if you wait for them to leap you can stab them with up thrust to take them out. The us version doesn't give out good exp like the japan version does though. With practice though it will make things go more smoothly and you look like a bad ass doing it too
Try as i might i just can't beat the boss before dark link, every time i try i end up with 2 lifes and full magic but i still can't win
Yall talking about how save states are for babies. Y’all realize there’s a reason Nintendo never talks bout this game right?
This is the only game I’ve played and never beaten. 😂😂😂😢😢😢
I beat the shit out of this game so many times. But MEGA MAN is where I failed miserably.
i didn't know that. i mostly skip those birdknights because they give crap points.
