I live in carmel. During rush hour on a couple of the high traffic roundabouts, legs do get backed up. And guess what? Different legs take their turn going through, and while you may come to a stop for 10 seconds, it's easily 4 times less time spent at the "intersection" than you would at a stoplight. Now whenever I drive outside of carmel and sit at lights forever I feel like I'm in the stone age.
@@Matijab. I live a street over in Indy but right south of the Carmel border. I always go to shop in Carmel bc it's quicker to get around than dealing with all the stop lights in Indy.
Right!? I guess it's the whole "afraid of change" thing. 99% of people that live here went from hating them to getting annoyed when driving in a city without them. They save sooo much time, prevent accidents, etc
If you use your eyes, it's incredibly simple. and because they reduce speed to below 30mph for ALL cars, there has yet to be a fatality resulting from an accident in a roundabout. Can you say that about stoplights? If you honestly find it dangerous to have to "avoid big obstacles in the road" (it's called driving your car), then I honestly have no idea how you got a drivers license.
I live in New Orleans where we have a lot of divided streets intersecting each other with traffic lights and the motorists have evolved what I call a New Orleans Left: you're on a divided street and come to another divided street with a traffic light, turn left onto the far lane of the cross street and immediately STOP, and sit there until the cross street's light turns green even if there's a gap in the oncoming traffic of the street you were on before. This causes backups into the intersection and sometimes I find myself staying in the right lane and making a u-turn a block beyond and making a left just to avoid the mess. We have exactly two old-fashioned traffic circles in this city and they work like a charm. A roundabout would definitely solve the New Orleans Left problem and where it won't a Michigan Left will. I'll definitely take a roundabout over a traffic light anytime!
I don't even live anywhere near Carmel (I'm from the Greater Philadelphia Area), and I feel as though I am living in the stone age here. All intersections in my area are four-way w/ either stop signs or traffic signals and God, do they take forever. I like roundabouts because they're a lot safer and quicker. But, if I'm to say that on a space like CZcams, mostly every American with a license will call me an idiot and suggest that I shouldn't have my driver's license. Foolish!
It's been over 6 years and not a single person has even responded to your comment, not to mind called you an idiot and suggested that you shouldn't have a driver's license. Your opinion of Americans seems to have been wildly off.
Carmel jokes: To calculate distance in Carmel, don't forget to multiply by pi/2. Want to know what it's like to live in a bowl of Cheerios? Live in Carmel.
Roundabouts are by far simpler. People just need to know how to drive in them...and it's not hard. You just yield to anyone in the circle and then you can go. It saves gas and money for both the town/city and you. Also, you can go places so much faster instead of hitting every light red. Roundabouts are the future and need to be more widely implemented.
Roundabouts may have a number of advantages, but they do require considerably more space than regular cross-street intersections. I presume Carmel doesn't have a substantial existing urban area, and does have a lot of open space to accommodate traffic circles. Heavily urbanized landscapes do not have this space; thus they cannot have roundabouts inserted into them later on.
I thought the same, but it depends how many lanes they want the circle to be. I have one close to where I live and it didn't take more space at all, but it is a 1 lane circle that used to be a traffic light intersection. It's also that island in the middle that if build too big, then you need more space. But in general, wherever I drove and they replaced regular lights with round abouts, they didn't use more land.
This is how I explain roundabouts in our area. Carmel has the most and has got both the design and lanes down. Westfield has the design but has massive lanes. Then there is Zionsville... They have roundabouts with little stub center pieces. As well as instead of yield signs they have stop signs.
I live in Carmel. I like roundabouts, but Mayor Brainard has gone crazy. They are EVERYWHERE. They appear in remote areas where I almost never see any traffic, fixing "problems" that didn't exist. Roads are shut down for months causing major headaches. And the city is $1.5 billion in debt (yes, billion with a 'b'). Kickbacks?
1:30 And the city saves money too!!! ... The Last thing carmel needs is to save money, if anything they should give some back. If Richie Rich bought a home in Indiana,, it'd be in Carmel....
I live in alabama I tell every1 about the roundabouts back in indiana lol there is like 2 here and people are idiots like don't know how to use them! I never saw a wreck at a roundabout either I used to live 96th and keystone
you realize that every single city that implemented roundabouts, their collision numbers, especially fatal collisions, plummeted right? you sound like a really bad driver
Therenis one roundabout in my city. In the center. But no one knows how to properly use a roundabout, and so while there isnt accidents, most avoid it because they are scared of idiot drivers on it or its too much traffic.
@Ilovesheep When there is a lot of traffic the roundabouts are a nightmare. In Mexico it's a dangerous free for all with people ignoring all courtesy and traffic laws to make their way around. It's so dangerous I won't drive there and even as a passenger I close my eyes and pray. The most dangerous places are the roundabouts. You are absolutely right that it's stupid.
@samsticka nah, cars do stop if they cant go in imediatly and tha only accident ive seen was a truck to big to go around so it literally tried to drive over one hah
Carmel, IN is a great place to live, work and raise a family. The prices for our homes are very good. Check out these 750 Carmel Indiana homes for sale currently in the Indianapolis, Multiple Listing Service: mswoods.com/Carmel-homes-for-sale-city.htm
Would help if they didn't plant stuff in the middle and take away the view of other motorists. Not many people yield properly in them. You will see more accidents soon if your city keeps growing. Every city I have been in the folks use it for an excuse to speed up. Tough on us truckers because it causes weight distributions of loads to shift especially if we have to ride the edge.
1:32 Each roundabouts is lavishly hardscape and landscaped with amazing array of flowers(for every season), bushes, trees, stones walls, and huge planters, not to mention they each have drip system, irrigation, and light. Every season they are decorated and periodically someone is there to cleanup dead plants, add mulch or plant some more. HOW MUCH DOES that COST ? No one can stop to see much of these roundsabout and yet we are all paying for it. WHY SPEND so MUCH on these roundabouts?

Roundabouts are one of my favorite things in Carmel! All around plus for the city! 👍
I live in Carmel and I love those things
i live in carmel and everyone jokes about how many roundabouts there are😂😂
Roundabouts are great. I hate sitting idle at stoplights and stop signs now. Only in the busiest areas does it make sense to have a stoplight.
For the people living in Carmel Indiana are lucky to have roundabouts, there's literally no roundabouts near me

live in Carmel, roundabouts are awesome! However, Anderson Cooper mispronounces the town name throughout. Very disappointing.
i live in ohio. i am thinking about moving to carmel. is it worth it
It's not Carmel like in Carmel in California - it's Carmel like in Our lady of mount carmel. As in the candy carmel.
Exactly…😊

We've got an over 100 year old "roundabout" in Indianapolis Indiana - it's called The Circle Monument". Roundabouts are NOT new.
The funny part after Carmel did it. It spread. Westfield got and other areas near Carmel. So yeah.

Fort Wayne is getting more and more nowadays as well. I'm excited.
Roundabouts kick ass!
@samsticka Intersections are an accident waiting to happen...
Ask him to have a talk with my city's mayor please! Chester, PA needs more roundabouts!!!

This is ridiculous. Most of this segment is explaining about what roundabouts are. As if it is some mystic object.
Do something to make people slow down as they approach these things

Why does this sound like the USA never heard of this and rip-off this from Europe saying it's their greatest invention 🙄
Here in Noblesville US 37 suck balls everyday. I don't think roundabouts are suitable but there needs to be something done.
@samsticka nah, cars do stop if they cant go in imediatly and tha only accident ive seen was a truck to big to go around so it literally tried to drive over one hah
They are not suitable for eveywhere in my hometown they put 2 in and they are one of the most dangerous intercetions in the county.
I can't but I can tell you they are on Moorland Rd at I-43 in New Berlin WI. One is 3 lanes very rare in the US check it out on google maps.

Wow, a city that takes pride in its surroundings? What an absolute outrage!
@04smallmj Yeah, well, I like to keep things easy and simple and a roundabout is not.
