After I watch these speed runs, I always hop online and try it out for myself. My opponents are never on board with my strategy and I end up losing drastically
just play more games, and make sure you watch the habits speedrun
I feel your pain bro. It's fun though!!
im improving by taking my times on moves
It's because Erik is playing 3 minute and plays pretty accurate in like a second. These 1300 rated opponents in 3 minutes are like 1000 rated 5 minute players and like 800 10 min players
@@TheCrimson7272 nope buddy they are 1300 in rapid i am 1200 but i am only 900 in biltz
12:46 Eric: "If the he doesn't care about his Rook, neither do I..." reporting the abuse to CZcams
17:38 - two Italian dwarfs in a headlock
I've been following this hippo journey and have learned a lot about playing positionally. Since you started this series I've gone from 600 to 950 rating. Thanks Eric you fucking giga chad.
Tried the hippo at 1700 and got absolutely railed lol
What is your tactical game because if you play it to defensivly or too agresivly you will loose.
Love this series Eric, please also do some more relaxing rapid vids too! Keep being an awesome brah
Love the hippo, run it all the time now after watching this series and I’ve seen really nice improvement!
@@Ali-038 interesting 🤔
Predator 2 was way underrated. I think I'll re-watch it this weekend. Cheers!
I love the hippo and wait for every new episode. Thanks so much!
this opening got me to 1400 thanks Eric
I like those speedruns because it's so much fun roasting all those poor low level players and I can guess and understand many of the moves in the context of the same opening.
I went from 800 elo to 1000 elo using only hippo lol, thanks for the videos.
Same actually but I'm stuck there now
I went from 1700 to 1750 useing this opening with black
@@IamnotfromUSA I went from 1950 to 1300 using this opening
@@h.h.h.9307 I am 1800 now useing hippo
@@IamnotfromUSA I hate players like you
I love playing the hippo and the hedgehog. I don't use them much against higher rated players but it is super fun playing people 1600 and below
I recognize that song:
Evgeny Bardyuzha - Sooner or Later
12:30 "yes, I'm eating very well this game". hahahahaha. nice.
Let's go Eric!! I've been experimenting this opening in rapid 15|10 and my spatial awareness has improved although I've lost more than I've won and I'm at around 1400. For anyone trying this, I would say try it out and try to not dwell on some of the common mistakes that occur with this opening. Some of the reoccurring mistakes for me are castling dilemma/delays, hanging d pawn, pushing too early, Queen position (since you find yourself cramped in the back ranks).
in a lot of my games woth the hippo, i have to decide on what pawn push to make, C4 or F4 to start expanding on one side or the other
Still struggling with the pawn pushes
@@KenLongTortoiseI think I came to this decision too but trying not to go by a memory kind of thing
this series is a lot of fun :) hope youll go for something similar after this ones done
A bit of industrial in the background music nice 👍
Great speed run series, I loved it from episode no 1. Thanks, Eric, for great content, thanks to all chessbrahs buddies!!
Little plea if I may.... Could you try playing hippo in loner time control for example 5/5... Somehow opening goes great, I have initiative, but at critical point my opponents finds critical great moves. I don't know if the engine was powered on for that move, but it is interesting to say at least. May be when there is more time for opponent to think they find remedy for hippo, or I'm just bad at chess :(
You make so many obvious moves that I don't see till you do them.
I know right?
I'm not good in openings, I don't know theoretical lanes and my early game was bad. I started play Hippo with this speedrun and now i have concept for beginning of every game. My rank on lichess launched from 1200 to 1400+. Thank you for these series, keep going!
26:14 "make their presence felt"?
"Uhhhuh, make your opponent feel it"
Yeah, good enough
"if my opponent doesn't care about this rook then i don't care about it either. i'm not going to take it" ahahaha
These speedruns help so much as a 900 rated player.. To understand the thought process of a Grand Master is so precious...Thanks Eric!
Played the hippo a bunch at around 2000 elo. Took a few tries then its solid, way way way better than it looks.
1:20 japan is also great for doctor quality 🤣. Need to see 10 doctors in the States to get a proper diagnosis
eh. depends on if you do ur due diligence before hand and make sure your visiting a quality doctor.
@@backfuckinhurts so you agree the doctors suck. A country with good doctors, you just go
Interesting line in the Owen defense (1. e4 b6) that can win you the bishop pair and otherwise transpose into typical hippo positions:
1. e4 b6 2. d4 Bb7 3. Bd3, a popular move-order avoiding Nc3 and the potential Bf8-b4 pin and maintaining flexibility with the white c-pawn.
3. … e6 4. c4 Nc6 attacking the d-pawn. On Ne2, Nf3 or Be3, black plays Nb4 winning the bishop pair because saving the bishop would hang the e-pawn. Assuming white responds with a logical developing move, white will stand slightly better due a lead in space and development. Black will have won the bishop pair which may help a hippo player’s fianchettoed bishops on the long diagonal.
White can force black out of a hippo setup in two ways, both of which give black near-equality.
White plays 5. d5 Bb4+ and black is able gain equality actively. Or, on move 5 white moves the d3 bishop anywhere, protecting d4 at the cost of time.
Can’t think of a better way to spend my Friday night 😍
35:40 enjoying the music a bit much brah
would love to see Magnus play with or against the hippo
Eric....i am so tempted to try this opening out for life....looks rock solid but am so much happier sipping my coffee...wait6ing for the rains to come (yup that time of the year in India) and keep watching your hippo brutality.......u r a gm so it looks easy a su have a deeper understanding of the game,,,...we may not survive this but i will try...when i have watched all the episodes...please continue with this speed run forever.....try it out against the titans...aman...eric...gotham chess...lets see how it fares.....
How high can you go? Also I wish my opponents made as many blunders.
Until a month ago, I would play Hippo every black game, my library had a book on it, and it was my only black opening for several months. But I felt like I wasn't good enough to play it as a 1200. I thought it was fun to play this odd opening, make a super solid defense, and chuckle when it seemed like opponent could not progress. But my games usually only consisted of me trying to make a pawn storm into their king, and they almost never opened in the middle where you are getting all these free bishop captures. I started playing e4-e5 openings now, and hope by learning more basic strategies from those openings, I will be able to play more unique openings like the Hippo and the English better.
hippo is withstanding
Since the first video on the Hippo, I have started to use it in my games with some success, not nearly as good as a GM but it does work. I notice though that I am not seeing a lot of people hanging their bishops, knights or Rooks that much. I have noticed most people have difficulty breaking the wall though. Just to clarify I am a patzer that makes blunders every game.
21:55
Black has one of my favorite positions. It looks so pretty.
6:45 I love when thd hippo zcreams woooo😐
9:20 whatt??? No understand ???
12:40 stooooop😭
22:10 plz play more aggresive games u finsh fast
22:25 eyyyo🙄
27:15 u missed checkmate are u kidding me ?
44:15 thats on point
U even caculate checkmate to gain only 6 points u are getting 2 heart for that 🙄❤❤
Kaytranada boiler room is fire 🔥
I was screaming at the screen e5 do it! Didn't happen for a couple moves so was like wait maybe I'm missing something
Is the soundtrack in the video the same as what Eric is listening to?
I learnt London from aman now I am learning hippo and England thanks guys.
First game was definitely a rage DC haha
@1.48 wouldn't pushing the pawn to e5 opening up an attack on the queen just win a piece?
Where do you find these 1300s? Maybe I gotta use a Canadian VPN or something. I get paired with super 1300-1400s, or maybe they're sandbaggers and then fight to get back to 1370 and repeat
Song at 36:00?
This is great, but personally, I’ve been having a lot of trouble sleeping lately and could use some assistance relaxing.
Hungry hippo time
33:45 wtf out of nowhere he starts doing push-ups
you dont?
11:30 ?s Why after b6xc5 you do not Ba6 to pin the knight to take on the next move as a rook is going to be captured with a move or with a capture and a5 recapture loses a rook! Why wait? You are very strong but missed opportunities are prevalent in chess I guess.
1:32 isn't pawn E5 better?
This is sad! These 1300s have no idea!
Did mans just reference neopets
Waiting for 1400-1500
The Hippo is my water dwelling cousin. He's a cool guy.
12:39 missed D3
22:24 You're only playing chess right 🤨🤨
nice, my elo level
2 italian dwarfs in a headlock lol wut
At last!
It's cool that first opponent had his own system, but that system did look absolutely terrible.
It never helped me they sacrifice and checkmate everytime
Bro arent you serious even i spot the tactic at 1:30
❤👍👍👏👏👏👏
I got a 59% win rate so far with the hippo ppl don’t know to play against it 😂
I like this opening but keep losing with it
GM playing against 1200 ratings opponents?
Xd
He makes it look so easy. I keep losing to 600 elos.
Please help LOL.
11th
1:42 E5 was no good?
It’s probably quicker to put the position into an analysis board than wait for a response
@@Gabe-zm9vh But also, kinda lonely that way, wouldn't you say. I don't watch this guy play not to tip him. I enjoy doing it like this. I can barely stay through a game before I claim a miss in a position. I only talk to people here that end up talking to me.
@@Gabe-zm9vh See, these chess player misunderstand that a mistake is a move not taken in this game.
