    Lincoln was almost too good a man and almost too smart for his time. We still have much to learn from him and his example.

      Absolutely right. When Everett finished, everyone was expecting Lincoln to give another long speech. Many chose to quickly step away for a drink, or to use the facilities. Also, thats when photographers took a minute to reset their equipment. By the time people returned, and the photographers cameras were ready, Lincoln was already finished. Just about every member of the press covering the event thought the speech fell flat.
      After Lincoln spoke, Everett said to him "I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes."

      Yes, the often-quoted criticism of the speech was from the Chicago Times, who dismissed the address as “silly, flat and dishwatery”.

    The Emancipation Proclamation had little effect in the US, but had an affect politically, causing European powers to back away from supporting the Confederacy as most of them had already ended slavery in their nations.

      I believe that this is a common oversimplification. While it is true that the Proclamation only went into effect in the areas that were in active rebellion on January 1, 1863, and thus freed no slave on that day, it was perhaps Lincoln's hope and intent that as the Union forces made advances in the coming months, more and more slaves would find freedom and thus help the Union cause. That in fact happened, particularly in 1864 when Sherman brought such large swaths of Southern land under Union control on his march to the sea that the Freedman became a bit of a logistical burden to the military forces.

    • @ceebee8042
      @ceebee8042 Před 6 měsíci

      Once again you ignore black history. Thousands of blacks left plantations to follow the Union soldiers crippling production of food and everything else in the South. It totally destroyed the foundation of the South by weakening it and causing its downfall in the end."No effect..." Nonsense.

    A presidental term no politican would ever aspire to after what we now know. Sitting president overseeing a CIVIL WAR between north and south.. its been said that the recent popularity of the telegraph had altered the habit of verbose letter writing . Never before could communication be so quick and conversely kept brief as possible. Im sure LINCON had seen his share of letters snd dispatches during his presidential bid and going forward. Then to compose an address of 268 words and be excused from the podium is something of a first for any presidential speech up until that time. And what a magnificent historic couple of paragraphs. Suddenly americans from all walks wanted a personal copy to own . And the brevity that made it a bestseller must have been a factor.

      I don’t drive an automobile. I drive a car. I don’t have a spouse, I have a wife. We don’t have a democracy, we have a Constitutional Republic! “Pure Democracy” is just that real specific thing they do in New England and Ancient Greece, and nothing else can be called democracy. Ever. Not even voting for the people who represent you.

    the Music was too loud. The words are as golden and Abraham's address. I'm am a hard rock confederate yet I knew that slavery had to come to an end. It's just that a little more empathy from the self righteous abolitionists would have helped the south with it's problem of slavery. NOt to mention the horror that a little more compassion could have prevented such devastation.
