- The Electro-Voice "Variable-D" Series is one of the most popular dynamic microphone series ever made. These microphones have a reduced proximity effect that allow for easy mixing on sources that could use a pre-EQ-d microphone. In this video we compare three vintage Electro-Voice models that use the "Variable-D" principle. We're listening to a 1970's 664A which sell for around $100, a 1970's RE-10 which sell for around $200, and a 1970's RE-15 which sell for around $500.

Prefer the RE-10 based on how the mids sound in these captures. I have a 60's 664 and your example seems to be a bit honkier than mine. GREAT MICS, all of them. Greatly appreciate your content
Nice comparison. I have the 664 and to my ears I wouldn’t spend the extra money on the 10 or 15, although all three sound really good.
I love EV's and wish I had bought 3-4 more RE-11's when I bought mine in the late 2000's. Used to be everywhere for $50-75. That particular Variable-D mic has an amazing midrange and a perfect roll-off for vocals. RE-15 is very cool, has something slightly smoother sounding than the other two. Thanks for the demo!
I think all of them sounded really good. But for 100$ I was really impressed with the 664!
RE-10 on acoustic... RE-20 drums... the 664 cool on both, but more as an effect mic... thanks for the great vid!
Nice! I've been looking at these mics a lot this week, actually, and have really been overlooking the 664a. I'm surprised at how well it holds up here. The RE10 is my favorite considering cost. The clarity of it is definitely better than the 664, but not sure if the difference between the 10 and the 15 is worth the price difference. I would love to hear a comparison with the RE10 and a modern SM57 sometime. Love your LG-3 by the way!
I have five of the 664 mics. I use it with my old bands PA. It been years since I used them but they’re ready to go
I really liked the RE-10 the best.
I used re-15 mics for years on many sources, but they developed grounding/microphonic type issues. They are stunning when working properly though.
Hey man! Just found your channel a few days ago. It is great, quality content, and very very useful! I am very interested in what year and model exactly is your Gibson acoustic. Thanks, Abel
Thanks for the kind words! It’s a 1957 Gibson LG-3!!
Love your vids. Curious, what pre you using with these old dynamics and ribbons? They can be fussy in my experience.
Most of the time an AEA RPQ2!
664 sounded so good on the acoustic!
Big jump between the 664a and RE10. Smaller difference between the re10 and re15 but it's there.
Listening further I like the RE15 better for the drums and I like the RE10 better on the acoustic guitar. I generally seem to find those mics for about the same price, but the 664 is a good cheap alternative for sure.
the difference between the 664 and the re-10 is a lot more noticeable than the difference between the re-10 and the re-15. i think the jump from the 664 to the re-10 is definitely worth it, and the 15 gives you a little extra sauce and dynamics if you wanna shill out the extra cash for it
664a more natural in acoustic guitar. thanks!
What about re-18?
The RE-18 also has the same style of capsule! Maybe I’ll get one in sometime and make a comparison.
RE-15.
