- York rock outfit Shed Seven were a massive part of the Britpop movement of the '90s, and are still going strong today. Join me to chat with frontman and vocalist Rick Witter about the origins of the band, their mega-hit Chasing Rainbows, meeting the Stone Roses at Rockfield Studios and occasional run-ins with Oasis.

Going for Gold is one of my all time favourite songs and Shed 7 are such an underrated gem of the British rock n roll scene of the 1990's. Another great interview James.
Most underrated band of the 90s. Plus Rick holds a special place in my heart after he dedicated Chasing Rainbows at a show in Liverpool to my mate that had died of cancer not long before XXX
Rick Witter pissed in the coin slot of the Juke box in the Student Union in Cardiff. He got chucked out by the bouncers and he shouted “don’t you know who I am.”

never understood why shed seven never made it bigger rick is such a fantastic frontman and the instrumentation is always fantastic hope they come back to glasgow soon!
Please continue interviewing these legends who don't have as many interviews as more popular musicians.
Your getting some great guests on nowadays James. I went to watch Shed seven a few years ago in Lincoln and ended up back stage meeting Rick and spent ages talking with the drummer. Really nice guys. I to are a massive fan and was probably one of the best days of my life.
Great stuff. Some of my favourite gigs have been Shed 7 ones over the years. Had my 7 year old son on my shoulders at Camping Calling this year and he sang Chasing Rainbows word for word!

I was lucky enough to support Shed Seven with an old band Rick Witter was a gent and I probably overstayed my welcome in pestering him talking about a Maximum High and how I grew up on it.
Thanks James and Rik I really enjoyed this. I too am a lifelong fan. Can't wait to hear some new music from them. Possibly catch a gig too.

So glad you got to interview Rick, James. Been to several Shed 7 gigs over the years and even had the honour of supporting them in 2003. Sound guys and I think they’re bigger now than they were in the 90’s and that’s going some!

Great interview, Rick seems like a really cool guy. Change Giver was a game changer for me, massively underrated album and the sound of a band on the edge of something great. Love Shed Seven!
A class band an an underrated front man, another class interview mate, Would be absolutely over the moon if u got John Power from Cast on here, a real great bloke and a brilliant songwriter who’s knows what’s it’s all about

Shed Seven are a bloody brilliant band and Rick seems like a genuinely nice guy. A Shed Seven/Cast gig would be bloody amazing, saw them both in the 90s... Cast and Weezer in 95 in the Garage in Glasgow... think I saw Shed Seven and Happy Mondays in '99 at Glasgow SECC...

Great channel for us ex indie kids who are now indie dad's. Brit pop was a great time, Britain was really a good place to be and we were allowed to be proud of our working class culture. Unfortunately those days will never happen again as Britain has changed so much and will never go back to how it was

Saw Shed7 in Leeds Town and Country Club in 1996 after the The Stone Roses gig and they were great. I still remember 'Going for gold' as the last song even now.

brilliant band, very under rated and didnt quite have the success they deserved, seen them at the Barras in Glasgow and they done This Charming Man along with Chasing Rainbows as encore, fucking amazing!

Another good interview James! I was already into The Stone Roses etc and I remember seeing them play Dolphin on tv and thinking they looked cool and sounded great.
Magic Streets, She Left Me On Friday, Going For Gold; this was one alternative in the mid 90s that I enjoyed as Guitar music and Vocals. Fabulous Shed7 and to be paired with CAST next year, WOW. Wish it was the 90s all over. Good Luck S7!

I remember a comment from Rick in Select magazine around 94/95.."Oasis are like Mr Kipling and we are just simple bakers". Love his self-effacing attitude to it all. First saw Shed Seven at the Octogan in Sheffield in 96, Mansun supporting. Brilliant band, still keeping on. We used to cover Dirty Soul as a set opener in our band for years. Timeless music and brilliant set of lads.

Brilliant interview. I watched Shed Seven at a gig at Time Sqaure Newcastle 6 years ago. Ocean Colour Scene, The Bluetones and John Power from Cast were also on that night, a fantastic gig that night. I remember thinking that Rick had hardly aged in 20 years when I was at the gig

Shed Seven are still one of my favourite bands. Maximum High is in my top 10 albums of all time and they're still, genuinely, bloody ace live.

I saw them couple of years back and Cast were the support band and it was an amazing gig so definately will be a blast top song from cast Sandstorm and from Shed Seven Chasing Waves

I had a signed cd by these guys, they recorded a album near where I was working at the time in Lincolnshire. Got to see them at the corn exchange in king’s Lynn, great night.
i have seen these guys 5 times and they rock absolutely amazing live and were the most underrated band of the era.
Rick was my idol in the Britpop era, followed the Sheds everywhere, loved your previous content James and you're making me like you even more fella
Great band. They always play a few shows around Christmas time and me and the wife go every year. Looking forward to Millennium Square gig next year in Leeds
You've gained a subscriber and a fan James. I always found the Sheds to be more original than Oasis who seemed to be interested in mass appeal over art. Excellent interview with unique questions and you're clearly a fanatic .
Seems like a really cool guy. People never seem to have heard of them I find. I’d imagine the 20 million streams of Chasing Rainbows on Spotify has been largely down to being featured on all the 90’s & Britpop playlists that play on random
I'm a bit embarrassed to say I didn't know Shed Seven before this year, but I've become a massive fan now, and this video was a wonderful deep dive into their biggest hits. Lovely group of guys and great songwriters 👍🏻
New album out in Jan . We went to see them only 4 days ago . On form as usual. We’ve been following them since the early 90s . Fantastic band .
amazing interview! I was hoping you'd ask about 'Devil in your shoes' , there could be a good back story there . I love shed seven, I think they were highly underrated.
I played Devil In Your Shoes to my band mate and he said ‘you can tell they like Stone Roses’

I remember when Shed Seven released their debut album Change Giver in 1994, on of the first gigs they played in the UK was at St Cuthberts High School gym in Rochdale - Greater Manchester, which was my high school. I was lucky enough to bag a few tickets for me & my mates, which where pretty cheap for such an amazing gig.
Rick seems like a nice and down to earth guy. I must be one of those people who either haven't heard anything by them or, if I have, I'm oblivious to it. I shall check them out.

I saw Shed 7 about 4 years ago in Bournemouth ( O2 Boscombe used to be The Academy ) when they had a brass section wearing Led Zeppelin t shirts . The place was totally packed and for a Tuesday or Wednesday night was a massive party. They were on fire - even Sooty from Sooty & Sweep was near the front riding high .Bloody professional, slick but with everyone there at the same time. Fantastic stuff . .

Shed Seven was one of my favourite band's, definitely in my top 5 brit pop indie band's.
I’d love to see the new chasing rainbows photo, what a great idea to recreate it.
I am part of that group of people who grew up listening to music from the Madchester and Britpop movement, but who had never heard Shed Seven until 1 month ago, and it is incredible that tremendous hits have never sounded so strong here in South America. Hopefully in 2024 they will consider a little world tour.

Tbh I never really listened to Shed Seven, but I figured It'd be a worthwhile watch all the same. He seems like a stand up guy. Also, I have to say it's heartening to see how bright your face is when you do these intweviews, I admire how into it you are with your videos.

One of the first bands I put on my Spotify playlist. I’ve always loved these guys. I wonder why he does not like Spotify? He seems like someone who would still use vinyl or cassettes but I’m too lazy for all that carry on.
Lived in York and Manchester both great places and Shed Seven are very talented band

What a nice bloke, that could have been twice as long. I’ve only written two fan letters in my life. One was to Cosgrove Hall for Duckula and Dangermouse and the other was to Alan Leach. I didn’t send either letter.

Years ago we blagged our way backstage at a small Shed Seven gig in Truro. Chatted with the band and even polished off some food and drink when they were whisked off by security to their hotel and me and my mates were the only guys left. Mental night. 😂
York isn’t shit and Shed 7 are very underrated.
I'd never heard of Shed 7 until about a year ago when they came by on a britpop playlist. I was blown away. I don't love every song on Going for Gold, but I love many of them!
I'm a bit stumped by how they weren't as big as Blur or Oasis. Oasis probably got by on attitude, but I reckon Shed 7 are as good as Blur who always struck me as a bit too middle class.
That's an Aussie speaking, so I don't know much about how things played out over there. How I wish I'd been in London in the 90s!
I don't recall any press about them down here at the time. I had records from Ride, Blur, Oasis, Spacemen 3, The Charlatans, Kula Shaker, The Stone Roses, but never a word nor saw a disc from these guys.
