It states that a bowman should recite Arjuna’s ten names, following the names of Bhagwan Shiva and Shri Rama, before going to war. This indicates that Arjuna is regarded as the greatest archer after Lord Shiva and Shree Rama. While inspiring, his character isn’t very relatable to the mass audience today. On the other hand, complex, gray characters with rags-to-riches stories are what really capture audiences' attention. This is where Karna, fits in perfectly. Karna’s story is full of dramatic twists: abandoned at birth, raised by a charioteer, becoming on of the great warriors, unknowingly befriending the main villain, sacrificing his natural armor and earrings, and ultimately standing by his friend, even though he knew it was against Dharma, and sacrificing his life for his cause. Karna’s life is full of emotional turmoil, making for great TV drama. However, Karna in Vyasa’s version has flaws like status insecurity, jealousy, arrogance, and boastfulness. To make Karna more likable, these traits are often toned down and transferred to Arjuna instead. Arjuna’s accomplishments are also downplayed to level the playing field. To further soften Karna’s character, problematic events like Draupadi’s disrobing are often reinterpreted. Instead of being an instigator, Karna is shown as reluctantly participating or being helpless. His generosity is also exaggerated, like turning his deal with Indra into an act of pure charity. Even his promise to Kunti about not killing four of her sons, which Kunti never asked for, is added to make him seem even more noble. Karna’s killing of Abhimanyu is sometimes depicted as a mercy killing to relieve Abhimanyu’s suffering. These tweaks turn Karna into a tragic hero who, despite siding with evil, is relatable and sympathetic. This makes him more popular than Arjuna, who appears privileged and less relatable by comparison.
