  • Physicist, Richard Smith, explores the physics of playing a wind instrument. Seen here using a custom made trumpet, with the air flow diverted, Richard shows that the vibration created by the lips can travel through a membrane. That vibration pulse is amplified as it travels on through the resonating chamber (piping) of the instrument.
Incidentally, by diverting the air away,, no moisture travels into the instrument. No spit valve needed!
When not playing with sound, Richard designs custom brass instruments for top musicians all over the world.
