      @7:50-
It's ironic that Cuy (pronounced Qwee in the Peruvian tounge of its origin) may sound like a made-up breed, but it is one of the genetically closest breeds to their wild cousins.
Cuy pigs is the name for the original domestic guinea pigs in their native Peru. Cuy pigs were kept in the house, in herds in their cuy pit, a room sized area sunk into the floor of a central room with the hearth. A family's cuy pig herd represented their relative wealth as they supplied a ready and cheerful food source for whole communities.
If you are interested in guinea pig history, there are several excellent documentaries on YT. It seems guinea pigs were one of the first "fad pets" in Europe, brought back on Portuguese ships from South America and could once be had for "a guinea", which was something only the wealthy could afford to fritter away for an exotic pet. It is primarily these European imports that are the more immediate ancestors of our beloved pets.
This is a wonderful channel, as well as the LA Ginea Pig Rescue channel. I have learned so much.💙

My friend runs a sanctuary here in the uk for piggies with the lethal gene and also for dental piggies. The vet she and I use has developed some unique and brilliant techniques in guinea pig dentistry among other things. The lethal gene piggies are often blind and deaf, white with red eyes and are prone to health issues and dental problems.I THINK they are a product of dalmation and roan crosses but Im not certain. Its 2 breeds that are not compatable though obviously. Many people consider lethals non viable but if they could see the zest for life and happy popcorns and zoomies these piggies do they would see that lethals deserve a chance. They are very happy little piggies.I love your videos Scot. They are so inspirational for providing people with the knowledge to give their piggies the best possible life!

Some more guinea pig breeds mostly found in (western) Europe but worth the google search!: Swiss or CH Teddy (very fluffy!), Californian (like the Himalayan but without the red eyes and mostly dark patches on cream), Lunkyara (crazy untamable curly hair), Minipli (strong curls), Merino (like the Texel but with a crest) and the ridgeback!
Also you can tell the US teddy and the rex apart by mostly the build as Rex guinea pigs are often bigger and have wavy or curly belly hair!

    Such cute guinea pigs!
I will say though, that breed can play a role in temperament and personality, not always, as yes, all guinea pigs are individuals, but often breeds can be stereotypical. For example, there is such a thing called "Abby-tude" with Abyssinians or abby mixes. HOWEVER, the "breed" of a guinea pig playing a role in attitude isn't something to fear, deny, or run from, it's part of what makes the breeds fascinating and fun! :)
Some people might associate "abby-tude" of meaning a guinea pig with attitude and bites, but that's where the misunderstanding is. Abby-tude doesn't necessarily mean a guinea pig that bites, it means a guinea pig that is full of character, silly, and fun, but yes abbys also tend to nibble more, but nibbles aren't bites, it's part of the curious nature of abbys. The curious nature of a guinea pig is what sometimes makes a guinea pig a little more silly or fun, so when possible, its better to enjoy an attitude as a goof-ball piggy. I think it's great to embrace guinea pig breeds, and I think it's great to embrace piggies with attitude! :)
Also remember, many guinea pigs, regardless of breed, will bite when they have to go to the bathroom, or they are insisting you give them food and treats while you hold them.
As a side note: From my own experience, all of my silkie/sheltie breeds have always been the most laid-back types once in my lap. Abyssinians tend to be adventurers and ornery, I even notice these traits in the Scott's abby's. Teddies sometimes have Teddy-tude, while teddy mixes tend to be casual or have sweet-natured temperaments. Smooth haired guinea pigs tend to be more skittish, but they also have the widest not-so-stereotypical temperaments, smooth haired guinea pigs is where the concept of each guinea pig has it's own individual personality is more true. What I mean is, smooth haired piggies don't have as much of a standard expected temperament compered to something like an Abyssinian. I see a pattern in temperaments and attitudes with many abbysinains, many isn't all though, it's just a noticeable pattern. With smooth haired guinea pigs, I don't see as much of a temperament or attitude pattern, except maybe more skittish and/or take longer to tame. However, that doesn't mean to be discouraged from smooth haired piggies, it means to love them more and eventually a smooth haired will be the best well-rounded piggy.
Enjoy the breeds, compare and observe them, there are sometimes breed traits, but there are always individual personalities. :)

Fun fact, guinea pigs are called cuy because that is the sound they make. I studied in Ecuador for 8 months. I heard about the restaurants that sold cooked guinea pig, never went to one because it wasn’t something I felt right in doing (I never heard my family talk about it either), but a few of the guys in my class had been walking with a friend and had passed a restaurant that specialized in cuy. He said it wasn’t a business he would consider go to, but wouldn’t judge the tradition since he knew what it was like to have his traditional Japanese food called weird or gross. Down there they hold the guinea pigs pretty high up there when it comes to important animals. It might not make much sense comparing guinea pigs in Ecuador as similar to cows in India, but the ties to Cuy is an indigenous religious one even though the country now days is Catholic (mainly). When we visited a museum in Quito there were references to Cuy everywhere.

Fun fact! Guinea Pigs actually don't carry the gene for true albinism, which is a complete lack of pigment in all parts of the body. Light refracting in pigment less hairs is perceived as white in an animal that has true albinism, whereas with piggies they actually have white pigmentation in their hairs and and varying degrees of pigment in their eyes allowing more or less red tissue to be seen through the eye causing a wide range of pink to red or even subtly purple hues!

Love the video. I found out that my daughter's 2 girls one is an am. short hair and she has a mix of color of white brown & black. The other girl is a cuy/mix and is all white with black eyes. We also in the other piggy home have a male agouti. They can see each other but the cages have a gap between. 💗💗💗and we will have no babies here!!!

I think it’s amazing the differences. We also have a few newer breeds in North America the Swiss and lunkarya. Then you have bounce/alpaca/ merino.
I know the few texels I had were just the sweetest.
    I mostly have silkies.

One of my cavies named Churrito is an American short hair abbsynian mix( I think). He has short hair yet the rosettes. He is supper cute. I love him so much. He has dark pink eyes and he is all white. He might be albino. His pal is gummy bear who is an abbsynian. Gummy bear has always been the sweeter of the two. I’ve had Churrito for two months and he has finally allowed for me to cuddle.
