he is so damn good...
thanks so much
When CLA is upset he gives away his tricks;otherwise he can talk for hours and tell nothing lol gotta love guy
This approach is pretty interesting cuz it gives you cleaner and more natural sounding results, putting reverb on the direct snare mic usually affects the bleed too (even when gated), which gives you a mushier sound, whenever I want some direct sounding reverb I put it on a sample 100% wet, not replacing, not even reinforcing the direct signal, it's just for reverb, then I hipass and lowpass the processed signal, and blend it to taste.
This sounds pristine as long as you have the right sample that matches your snare, make sure to tune it to the exact same pitch too and sounds even better.
Andy Wallace is very well known for this technique too.

I really look up to CLA, I think I have seen every possible mix video from him and learned so much from them
Less than twenty five seconds in and he’s already condescending
Sounds about right. The Chris we all love and came here to see be Chris
He basically hates pluging yet he promotes and creates them...........
@@playmode3976 He likes money more than he hates plug-ins.
Hahaha
I learn a lot from this video although I’m not a rock guy. I don’t have room mics but I put a little reverb in overhead and the result is pretty good.
Love that Daughtry album and love CLA! Thank you for making this
im all about dat cathedral reverb
so lucky someone didn't have to teach you...You already knew it all!
in what way are tom mics and snare bottom mics not "direct signals"?
weedywet The room mics are not inches from the drum head. In other words, not from the close mics.
yes, agreed. But he ALSO says tom mics and under snare mic; presumably those ARE "inches from the drum head". I didn't question the room mics.
weedywet I thought he said not to put reverb on those. It takes skill to bring out the snare and Tom strike frequencies, I think reverb would change the way You set the compressors to sound with snare and Tom's
No, he says very clearly at :30 - :45 seconds that he puts reverb on the snare bottom and the toms.... good to hear it "takes skill". I shall bear that in mind in future.
weedywet I didn't mean to sound Pretentious. Maybe the way he brings out the strike is with reverb. At the end of the day regardless of how you do it if it sounds good in the mix it is good.
THANK YOU !!!!!! Been rackiń my head on how to get/add reverb to my drum tracks.. AND make it sit/sound right. I use a Tascam dp 24. ...Mic’s... etc..
no pc... long story short.. never thought of adding reverb to just the room mic... hope you don’t mind, but I’m stealing your technique ... lol. Again.. THANK YOU
That's actually something I've not thought of before. The room & oh mics already have a bit of reverb in them.
-Though, this technique seems cleaner as you're just adding more depth and space to what's already supposed to have it.
also the room mics don't catch that much of the dynamics, and record with a natural predelay depending on their distance from the drumset.
this was important to mention. but it depends.
I just did that! definitely wanted an 80ies reverb sound, and pink floyd in pompeji tom-toms hahaha.. :)
has kick & snare bus, and all that gate-rev on that one. :p
worked great.
The snark on him is incredible
You can tell he HATES giving away even close examples of what he actually does in his mixes.
I don't know. I don't think he's worried about anyone taking his mixing gigs.
Makes no sends: His signature plugins do allow verb on direct signals. Love these by the way.
"I had sends before you had sends" Totally reminded me of Trump XD.
Some of you say “ I wanna put a reverb on a direct snare drum” well.... enjoy yourself.
Ive often wondered about what he means in this video about NOT putting verb on close mics. From other videos ive seen im pretty sure what he does most often is blends the recorded snare with a sample, then sends the sample to a verb. Not the recorded snare. You can hear this on Survival by Muse. You hear the snare verb increase in certain sections and at the same time you hear an obviously a brighter snare layered in. And it sounds like that brighter snare is whats hitting the verb.
1:10. He says it here. He puts it on the samples 👍🏻👍🏻
When I read people leave negative comments on drum sets stating "too much reverb" what do they mean? That it echoes or something? I'm not really familiar with reverb being a negative thing on a drum set....
It can sound unnatural and overwhelming if there is too much reverb, which is emulating the sound of being in a room. Reverb is similar to echoes, but instead of repeat...peat....peat..... it just makes the sound sort of carry on without specific repeats. "Reverberation"
Go Chris!
Light bulb... when adding reverb to the room mics you don't need to add a predelay parameter. Because they're already delayed by the time it takes to hit the mics.
" never put reverb on the direct drum mics except for the toms and bottom snare" -cla

infinite delay and reverb on sub bass is deffo adviseable. lolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
I bet that this drumtrack is made with Steven Slate Drums.
I can’t disagree. I recognize especially the kick.
Soy yo o CLA cada vez se parece mas al chavo?
My Samplitude Pro X3 Eq116 cant be found in Pro Tools. That's My Sound...
Until he wanted to sell his new reverb plugin and started slathering whole kits in four separate reverbs...

Good God the gate....
Can i call an SPX 90 My sound?. Yes. SPX 90's are also my sound.
Spanish please
I suggest that this is a whole lot of nothing.
The drums in the mix sounded flat and ice picky. CLA mixes out of the box which should help with this but something is happening that time smears the sound in an unpleasant way. Perhaps he's using in the box plugs with out of the box effects and the pro-tools delay compensation isn't set right or can't deal with his setup. Whatever it is, I wouldn't pay for that mix. It sounds flat.
Victor, would you please give an example of mix(es) that is/are not flat in your vision? Just want to know the difference. Thank you.
@@sergeipatrakov It's not my personal "vision". The mix sounds flat. Period.
@@victorbarnes6898 "Would you please give an example of mix you like."
