Nobody wants to be second choice. Derek was a good guy and he wasn't trying to string Meredith along and just have his cake and eat it to like most men. She may not have suffered or she and Finn could have suffered in the end like Derek and Addison did where ultimately their relationship broke down because they just weren't meant to be in the for the rest of their lives. And Finn deserves someone who is ALL IN especially given that' he has already lost that kind of love.
