How to clean curtains without taking them down. In this video tutorial I teach you how to clean curtains at home while hanging. Curtain cleaning can be done using simple items that you should already have in your kitchen, or that can easily be store bought. This method will not only teach you how to clean curtains while hanging, but it also can be used for cleaning pelmets. For pelmet cleaning take extra care not to tug on the fabric. Curtain washing is not a very difficult task though it is time consuming. If your curtains are heavily soiled or have problematic staining it may be more advisable to have a good curtain cleaning company do the work for you - our curtain cleaning brand is www.cleanmycurtains.ie
Curtain cleaning has a few benefits. It not only removes dust and dirt from your curtains which is unsightly so this video will teach you how to clean curtains with vacuum cleaner. Cleaning your curtains also eliminates dust mites and their faeces as they are vacuumed out thus removing allergens from your home. This reduces the chance of asthma attack and respiratory issues and can provide welcome relief for asthma and allergen sufferers. This tutorial will teach you how to wash curtains at home including how to wash blackout curtains.
TO CLEAN CURTAINS YOU WILL NEED:
- HEPA filtered vacuum and curtain cleaning attachments
- Bucket
- Mitt, towel, or microfibre cloth
- Dish Soap
- Rubbing alcohol (only if necessary)
METHOD:
1). Thoroughly vacuum the curtains as described in the video using your preferred vacuum tools.
2). Mix 1 teaspoon of dish soap and 50 ML of rubbing alcohol in 5 litres of water
3). Using your cleaning cloth or mitt to wipe the curtains down until you have removed dirt and the water has changed colour, you may need to make a fresh bucket of cleaning solution as you remove the dirt from your curtains

Just bought curtains and this was useful and helpful to know! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you, I am so happy to have found your video.
Excellence in action right here in this video. I am doing this very thing after washing my ceilings and walls. This is a keeper for sure to save on dry cleaning bills for drapery that is not machine washable. Thank you for this…now off to watch your dry cleaning option video as well.
Thank you!

Wow super good thank you worries about cleaning my silk curtains I took them down woops dusted the off outside. They have three layers ahhh wish me luck thanks for helping
You are so welcome!
Very appreciative of this esp as my son is asthmatic. Will try it now!
Brilliant, I'm so happy to help :) I've actually done a video on allergen reduction in the home which you may find useful; czcams.com/video/bgmlgDwo-ZY/video.html
@@CleaningHowTo ok many thanks. I will check it out! 🙏
Another tip that really helps asthmatics, is to wash all bedding at 60 degrees, as cooler will not kill mites, (even thought cooler is 'greener'), also drape the duvet back over the end of the bed during the day, as mites hate light and will retreat to the foot end. Also hoover the mattress every time you change the bedding (if you don't already?). We do all these and it really makes a difference
You are amazing! Thank you for sharing this!!!
You’re very welcome, thank you for your kind words! Did you try it out?
@@CleaningHowTo Yes, I did! It was quick and easy! Took me around 30 - 45 mins to do each 3 x 3 meter curtain set. Thank god we only have two!
@@ico2177 love this :)
I kinda figured a damp dry cloth/glove with vacuum will work. Thanks
Thanks for stopping by :)
Thanks!
Happy to help :)
Thank you!! Because I have high curtains just like that and I did not want to take them down.
What was in that very last spray bottle you used at the very end of the video (the one with the blue label around it)?
Btw awesome video
good to know i always wonder
Thank you :)
Where do you get those mittens? 😊
Was this a synthetic polyester fabric, or real silk? What type of rubbing alchohol percentage was this? Was the water tap water or filtered water?
+Alicia Cannon synthetic fabric, 70% ipa, and tap water.
What rubbing alcohol do you use for the curtains.
I also have sewn in black out lining on large cotton IKEA fabric. How would you clean those. The Re is a brown water stain from a flood on the lining too. Any tips?
What is the lining made of? Any rubbing alcohol is fine it wont make any difference. Vinegar may work on the water stain- but it may be permanent; watch my other cleaning tutorials you'll pick up various tips.
do you have list of cleaning materials that you used here?
Watch the updated version of this video - full list and more techniques :)

Can this method be used on very light shavon window curtains?
I don’t see why not. What material are they? Watch my revised curtain cleaning video - there’s more information there too.
Is it only the front side of the curtains that gets vacuumed? Does any cleaning happening to the back side of the curtain?
If you want to clean the back go ahead, I usually just vacuum them.
Thank you. I have curtains in an old camper that I can't take down.
I’ve a newer tutorial on this give it a watch :)
I'm trying to get dust off my curtains because it bothers my allergies. Is this whole method good?

Can you recommend a vacuum?
Sure, what type of vacuum do you need?
Can you do this with black coloured black out curtains?
Yes you can :)
Which hoover are u using
It’s a Sebo bs360
@@CleaningHowTo does that out perform mainstream brands for this specific task? What was your reasoning to go for this make and model other than being HEPA.
What if there's is a water stains how do you remove it
Try misting vinegar (white) in the cleaning cloth.
No plastic gloves before putting on the mitt and such? 😮 Can't this result in eczema or some other skin condition later on? Very practical video by the way!
I’m using what’s called a colloid cleaner and it’s very gentle.
Warm or cold water?
Warm is better - hot as you can tolerate it.
That looks like a ton of workssss. Can't i just use upholstery cleaner like karcher puzzi 10/1 😩
Wet extracting curtains can damage them - loads of reasons why but if you’re asking the question, then stick to the method in the video so you don’t damage them!
Bro my Dad literally called me lazy when I got dirt on my curtain after vacuuming and it got stuck in the vaccum as he is literally sitting on the counch playing on his phone so when I explained what happened he told me,”clean it, figure it out lazy” and he also said He hates the negativity in our house when he is sending me to my room for no reason just cause he does not like me and then calls me names like lazy
How to spend 16 hours cleaning curtains…
You ok, Jason? Need a hug?
Can barely hear him.
Watch my newer curtain cleaning tutorial :)
And along with that he says in a mocking tone oh you’re such a BA and a thug, but all you do is cry your a p word. He says this negativity as he says he hates negativity and wonders why I cry all the time because I’m 12 and a boy I can’t cry when I get bullied by a full grown adult which doesn’t that make him immature if he makes fun of kids that he wonders why are feeling like this and he literally is worse than my 1 year old brother and his clearly not fit to take care of any of them
vacuum once in two weeks and take hem down and wash them in every 6 months or so. save yourself a life.
Why on earth would you vacuum curtains every two weeks? They shouldn’t need to be washed every six months either; unless you smoke constantly with the windows closed 😁
@@CleaningHowTo even better. then do it less frequently. I understand this wet glove does a better job but it's a LOT of work! Why? Unless curtains are really expensive and will be damaged if washed often...
@@virtual7insanity the main reason is size, the secondary reason is cotton lining shrinks under moisture so putting non synthetic curtains in the washing machine, or bath, or any other form of flood cleaning will shrink and damage them.
This not the practical way to clean unmountable curtains👎
+Sanjay Gupta ok so, what is the practical way? I own a curtain cleaning business and we’ve cleaned thousands of pairs like this.
