  • www.ted.com Science writer Richard Preston talks about some of the most enormous living beings on the planet, the giant trees of the US Pacific Northwest. Growing from a tiny seed, they support vast ecosystems -- and are still, largely, a mystery.

If you want to read about how Richard and his wife-soon-to-be enjoyed their time up in the canopy, read his book: The Wild Trees. Amazing.

It does happen. Let say we accelerate the process quite heavily. Most big mammals are in dangered species because of us: whales, elephants, buffaloes, etc. Like here, there was a meal called "la tourtiere". It still exist, but they replaced the meat. Because of extensive hunting the passenger pigeon disappeared. It was the official meal of my nation. We lost an animal and a part of our identity and heritage. Me sad :(

I like how they used a Tolkien word to name this type of tree... But I think they could have used a better term like "Nimloth" instead of "Ilúvatar"

I guess they cared more about making those trees into money than preserving their dendochronologic data for future generations.
We are lucky there are still some of them standing.

Hmmm Mammothburger, Raptor chicken wings, T-Rex Steak... Except vegetarians would be pissed by all this new meat!
I guess tofu will always stay tofu... no matter what.

I usually get so annoyed when watching these vids because everyone tries to b a comedian and sometimes the mics are so close to there mouth and so sensitive you can hear there dry moist tongue sticking to the roof of the mouth and them peeling it away then you here there dry loud sticky swallow. Don't listen with headphones on it drives my OCD so crazy a can't stop focusing on it to the point I have to change it or I turn down volume so much and put on closed caption.
