Lancia Stratos HF Rally Gr. 4 Ferrari V6 Sound: Dual vs Single 6 in 1 Exhaust Comparison!

- The Lancia Stratos HF has always been one of my favorite rally cars ever made and I'm always so happy to see how many drivers still use this 45 years old splendor in historic rallies and events.
And a good place to see a few of them is San Marino RallyLegend.
What surprised me during the 2019 edition was to hear how the Ferrari Dino 2.4-litre V6 engine sounds like with a 6 in 1 header and a modern exhaust compared to the typical double exit layout. And as it happens for our beloved 991 RSR GTE, the V6 gets a so higher pitch with the single exit s that it didn't even sounds like to be powered by the Dino engine. But it is!
What do you think guys? I'm truly amazed by that high pitched noise but I remain faithful to the good, classic roar ;)

While not as sharp and raspy. Or loud for that matter, I'd say the original nsx v6 sounds pretty good- especially in vtec with the right set up

Absolutely the best
V6 is my least favorite motor, always lemon a car if it has a v6, and sound is the number 1 reason. This is the only v6 i have ever heard that actually sounds good! It isn't fluttery!
Single exhaust all the way, love that high pitched tone. Makes it sound appropriately exotic.
Can't go wrong with the growly low pitch of the dual exhausts, that's how a Dino V6 should sound like!

I prefer the dual exhaust. Sure the single exhaust sounds cleaner and more F1-like, but I just love the roughness of the sound in dual exhaust!

Me as well, I wonder if there is a way to replicate that sound on different six cylinder engine layouts. I'd like to find a way to make my 200ci in line 6 Falcon sound deep and throaty like that.

@@fadedjate7230 I think there is, but on some engines it takes some heavy modifications to do that I think. I'm not fully sure but I think that the firing orders and stuff like that also affect the sound, not just exhaust. For example the VQ35 engine found in 350z for example never sounds like that no matter what you do with the exhaust. But then for example the 6-cylinder engines made by BMW and also the V6 in Mustangs sound pretty much exactly like the sound we are looking for.
This is why my current dream car is a E30 BMW 325 with the M20 engine. I wouldn't mind swapping it for S50 or S54 but Finnish laws probably don't allow it lol.

Dual exhaust is slightly better. It has depper sound compared to single one. But single exhaust still sounds amazing

They might be slower than the 037 and the Delta, but they sound so much better! WRC three years in a row! The Stratos changed rallying forever...a new paradigm in the rallying sport.

The single sounds like a Ferrari engine should, the dual isn't bad though. The 60° V sounds WAAY better than any 90° V6 either way.

2:20 ive just thought how it sounds like it's revving twice as high but then if you think that single pipe will have twice the number of exhaust pulses going through it.

Do Stratos has the same engine as Fiat/Ferrari Dino? They both sound amazing, I guess I would choose dual exhaust sound as it sounds like an Old School V6, single sounds very nice as well but lower pitch reminds be bit of a F1 car. Great content
I must say, rallying isn't really my kind of motorsport, but I'm going to make an exception when there's Lancias. The owner of the no. 8 car must've thought "I know my car's a priceless rally car. I know, lets do some fast driving, some sideways action, and some jumps in it, that'll be lovely"

La stratos "giusta" ha 2 uscite..ma la numero 8 fa paura..sembra una moto..
il 6 in 1 fu disegnato da Ambrogi della University Motors, che preparò un sacco di stratos anche per Lancia corse. costruito da OMP su disegno, la differenza non stava ovviamente solo nel rumore ma nella erogazione della coppia che era più progressiva e meno strappata. apprezzato da tanti, ma per pochi ;-)
Is the engine in the #8 Stratos a genuine Dino V6? I know it has a different exhaust system, but it seems to rev much higher and quicker than the other Stratos cars. I doubt the exhaust system would account for such a difference? Either way, they all sound stunning!
Yup, the header lengths determine the sound. All equal length headers brings out the higher overtones (3:1).
They make two different sounds because of the different piping?

A good dual exhaust may give you more than 30 horsepower, compared to the 15 of a single pipe exhaust system. Dual exhaust delivers gasses out of the engine faster, which will improve the overall combustion. I.e., getting more “used” air (exhaust) out at a time.

Those with single exhaust has not an all original engine, it is much more powerful than the original Stratos

6 longtubes into a merge collector downstream is my guess. I mean it's possible with V8's, several 8 into 1 LS's on CZcams.

Non so se il motore rende di più o di meno, non ho elementi di giudizio in tal senso, ma il suono lacerante del 6 in 1 almeno per me è mille volte meglio del suono cupo e profondo del 6 in 2.

The one with single pipe has higher compression than usual group 4 specs. I am pretty sure that is revving higher. The pipes can re-form a sound but no so much as the creator of the sound :the timing between the internal pistons explosions.
There the sound is created and then is travelling through air to the exhaust sound.
Higher compression =higher revs =higher pitch sound.
