  • THIS IS A SUPPLEMENTAL VIDEO TO MY HBS 700/730 VIDEO. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE ACTUAL REPLACEMENT OR PARTS USED, PLEASE WATCH THAT VIDEO ALSO.
    This is my long overdue video on the HBS-750. It's a little more complicated to open up but, very simple to make repairs. I apologize in advance for my over use of the word "um".
    In this video I will cover how to open the earpiece and where the components are located. Repairing these devices is reletively simple. You only require basic soldering skills and a little courage.
    For further info, see my channel for more videos on the hbs series headphones.

    Okay, so I just repaired my right side earbud. The wire was cracked inside the insulation at the flex point where it exits the housing. I was able to use the same earbud by simply cutting back about 2 inches of the wire. the wires are multi-strand varnished wire so you have to prep a very short bit of the wire before soldering back to the circuit board.
    I just slide the grommet down the wire out of the way until I was ready to reassemble. I made sure there was a enough length stripped back on the jacket to make the new knot against the grommet and still be able to reach to solder pads. I used a drop of superglue in the knot because it kept trying to come untied. then you strip and tin the wires you can verify the earbud still works by measuring about 15 Ohms (not zero and not infinite). Once you verify the impedance, you can solder in place being sure to avoid shorting them with a solder bridge. Tuck the wires in, align the wires going around the loop and snap the housing back together and test. Once tested, you can replace the screw and plug.

    Hi, my friend, peace be unto you. You don't realize how helpful you have been. I really appreciate this fix and the LG 750 vid.
    I'm coming back a few months later to drop a comment as I realized that while your videos have come up amongst family and friend regarding this specific repair, I've never actually thanked you.
    I have helped pretty much everybody I know with fixing this type of head phones. My buddies at the gym are pleased. My sister wears a hijab and loves these headphone, but keep having to replace them. I fixed all of her 3 broken sets.
    She's been able to give the other 2 away to friends and family.
    We all got together and collected some money for charity and we gave it under your name. I hope that You are able to see the rewards of your good work in this life and the here after.
    Thank you for doing what you do.

    Thanks for posting this video, I use some hbs-750's when I'm working (lawn maintenance) and with the help of your video I was able to open them up so I could replace the stock buds with some Plugfone buds that block outside sound much better....Should allow me to keep the volume a little lower when working than before.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 8 lety

      +Dawson Mobley I was considering that myself. I need earplugs at my job so I was considering using sound blocking buds.

    • @dawsonmobley
      @dawsonmobley Před 8 lety +1

      +kez3000
      I'll report back how they do, I swapped them in today and they are working but the real test will come Monday when I use them with my equipment running, I'm very familiar with how loud everything is to me with the old buds so if there is much difference I will notice it.
      I can say the plugfones(executive model) sound better than I expected so no decrease in sound quality at least. I did reinforce where the wire exits the buds with shrink tube and rubberized CA as they had no strain relief at all and with the foam tips you have to pull on the wire to get them out of your ears...the wire itself will break now before the internal connections see any stress.

    • @dawsonmobley
      @dawsonmobley Před 8 lety

      The plugfones work great for me with the foam insert, they seem to block about as much sound as a pair of standard foam earplugs and they sound pretty good, not heavy on the bass but I prefer that in this application since I normally have the volume louder than I do on my "non-work" ear buds.
      The silicone inserts let too much high frequency sound through, plus they are a little too tight in my ear canal for comfort, so for me at least the foam inserts are the best option.

    I shouldn't really criticize your video. What I learned from it, was that this sort of soldering job, simply goes beyond what I can do. And this realization came at an inconvenient time. Actually, my HBS-750 headset still works 100%. It would just be good, if there was some way to repair it later down the road.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 7 lety

      yes, it is Milliamp-hour but I usually shorten it to Milliamps in conversations because those who understand will know what I'm referring to and those who don't won't care. I list the battery capacity as mAh for those who copy to search. The size is in millimeters (h,w,l)

      @MoeRubenzahl Před 7 lety

      It's possible your battery may have been damaged. The battery should never be below 3 volts and it shouldn't appear puffy or bulged. It's also possible that a connecting wire to the battery may have come loose. Those would be the first things I would check.

    kez3000 I'm not quite sure what the problem was but I took of the rubber piece (the one that goes in your ear) I cleaned everything and it seems to have a small circular cover on top idk maybe to prevent debris and what not from getting in..I took that off check the volume and it's working perfect again..put it back together repositioned it and it's all working..my guess was the cover was sorta jammed up in there..thanks..

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 3 lety

      If you search "501240 3.7v lithium battery", you should come up with some results. Just for reference, its a 3.7 volt lithium polymer battery. The stock battery is 195mAh capacity (basically how much power the battery can store). I usually replace with higher capacity for some extended run time like 220mAh. Model #'s are tricky because they are usually the dimensions of the battery. For example... The battery I used for the video was 501240 or 051240 (the first two numbers can be reversed with some sellers). This model number stands for 05mm tall-12mm wide-40mm long. That's important so you'll know if it fits in the space inside the earpiece.

    I have the HBS 740 and I can't seem to find a tutorial for anything about it. Mine just won't seem to hold the charge and stops at 30% and quickly dies. Is there something I can do to fix it?

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 8 lety

      I really don't know much about the 740. From searching Google, it seems to be a generic clone of the LG hbs700. My video on the 700 might help. Most of these units run on a single cell 3.7 volt lithium polymer battery. Usually around 195 to 260 mAh capacity (which ever will fit).

      That's usually the battery. If so, it can be fixed. I would open it up and check the battery wires first to see if they're still connected (sometimes they break off). Then (if the wires are ok) I would change out the battery. You can watch the procedure in my other video for the hbs 700/730. Hope this helps.

I have fully recharged, disconnected it and reconnected it from my Galaxy s3 but no luck! :( Any suggestions?

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 9 lety

      I was actually just asked a similar question the other day. I have another video for the HBS 700 and 730 (LG Tone HBS700 / 730 repair, mod and upgrade: czcams.com/video/UhFEuRD0vAA/video.html). You should watch it because it will show you how to open it up and get to the components.
      I would first check the hole for the mic and look for debris that may be blocking it. It's located just above the left side earbud cup.
      Next I would open it up and check that the mic wires are still connected to the circuit board.
      If the wires are still securely attached, the mic can be replaced. It's almost the same procedure as replacing the earbuds, just 2 wires to solder onto the board.
      I am planning on making my next video about the battery and mic since I have received so many questions about them.
      Let me know if this helps.

    kez3000 I have the LG HBS 700. Over time the insulation wears out near the housing and the wires are exposed. I've noticed the rubber boot that the ear bud wire is in the 730, 750, etc. I would like to add that to mine. I think it would release the stress on the wires a little bit. Where would a person get those or what would you suggest to fix this issue? Thanks in advance.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 9 lety

      I don't believe the rubber boot is available for sale. Even if it was, it wouldn't fit the HBS700 inside the housing like the HBS750 does and would not provide the protection you're looking for. There is an alternative that I tried a few years ago in an attempt to make my earpiece waterproof, I taped up the charger door and dipped my HBS700 in a product called PlastiDip. It's a liquid rubber that cures into a soft rubber coating. It can be easily peeled off too. You could use this product to add a rubber coating to the wire and create your own boot for the wire.
      Another option would be to make the hole in the housing for the wire a little bigger and add heat shrink to the wire. This would give the wire an added layer of protection. Of course this method would require you to remove the earbud from the earpiece first to slide the shrink wrap on.
      Let me know how it works out for you.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm not sure what exactly would cause that issue but it's likely a component level repair on the control board. Which means if you're intent on fixing it, you're best option is to buy a set on Ebay with broken earbuds for cheap and swap the circuit boards (or swap the earbuds from your old set).

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 9 lety

      Hi Miguel, you don't need to use the same model earbuds as me. The beauty of this mod is that you can use whatever ones you like. They work best if they fit into the cups but other than that, have fun picking style and color.
      As to the wires, one is positive and one is negative so yes, it matters where you place them to have the best performance. The negative will be the same color on both earbuds (usually gold or silver). The positive is usually a different color for left and right earbuds like red left /blue right or something like that. You'll see the same color scheme for most eabuds including the ones you find inside the lg tone. There is usually a (-) symbol on the pcb where the negative attaches. I go into more detail on this in my hbs700 video.

      I see, that is confusing that they didn't use a common color for negative. There is a simple way you can find out if you still have the headphone jack part of the earbuds and a multimeter. If you add some solder to the wires (to burn off the coating) and use the diode setting you can find the 2 negatives because they will be wired together inside the jack. I can explain further if you need more instruction. The positive wires should not be shorted to each other at any point so, you won't see them react when you check them against other wires with the multimeter.
      If all else fails, I would wildly guess that gold and green are negative.

      Once you add solder to the ends of the wires, you don't have to solder them to the pcb right away. I will usually touch the new wires to the contacts on the pcb with the earpiece streaming music to make sure the earbud works before committing to a permanent connection.

      +Michael Sadler well, there are a few possibilities. Opening it up will give you a better idea of what's wrong. If you sweat on them, the internals might get wet and corroded. They are not sealed very well against moisture. My guess is its the battery tho. The battery is sometimes not connected very well and over time can disconnect. I've seen it happen a few times. If you open it up as shown, you can check that there are no disconnected wires.

    • @michaelsadler3025
      @michaelsadler3025 Před 8 lety

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 8 lety

      +Michael Sadler opening it up is just a starting point. It gives you a chance to visually inspect the earpiece. Even if you don't know what all the circuits and wires do, it's not hard to spot something that looks burnt, discolored, disconnected or broken. The batteries aren't very expensive at all. On average about $5. The catch is that they are rarely on ebay or for sale in the US. I buy mine from over seas on Aliexpress.com and they take almost a month to arrive. It's worth the wait and nice that you can put a higher capacity battery in and get more run time. I highly recommend you watch my other video on the hbs 700/730. It shows a full tear down, earbud replacement and battery replacement. The model is different but the principal is the same.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 10 lety +1

      Yes, you can open the ear bud and replace the speaker but it's very tricky and I wouldn't recommend it. If you look at the side of the ear bud, you will see a seam. The ear bud case is glued together in two parts. If you squeeze it just right and pry it apart with a utility knife, it comes apart.
      I've tried it multiple times and have only been successful once. The problem is that the ear bud case usually gets completely ruined in the process of trying to open it. Also, extracting a speaker from another ear bud usually ruins the speaker because they are extremely delicate.
      The easier way to go, is to buy a broken earpiece on ebay for around $12 and extract a working ear bud from it.
      If you do attempt the speaker transplant, please keep me posted. I wish you luck and steady hands.

      Same thing happened to me. I used to always use the left side more than the other, then that side started to get way lower in volume. Started using the right side and the same thing happened.
      I found that the tiny piece of mesh covering the driver (you can see it when you take of the rubber from the earbud, looks like black paper) caused my earbuds to gradually get worse and worse.
      Try removing it and hearing the difference. It's like night and day for mine.
      Mine must have gotten permeated with earwax and stopped transmitting sound as well. It's a super-fine mesh so it's very understandable.
      I'm still looking for a permanent solution but I scraped one of the meshes pretty well and it seemed to have gotten better but not great. Have to have SOMETHING covering that driver.

If not, you can take the button measurements (usually in millimeters) and find a replacement online. I would look on ebay. Hi Jessica, sorry for the very late reply. For some reason, I didn't get a notification of your comment.
      I hope this helps.

    I have a few questions....
    What exactly causes the earbuds to stop working? Because all that happened to me was that I fell alseep wearing them ONCE and worked fine until like 6 hours later they randomly stop working in the middle of a song and now I can't get them to work properly again..

      Forgot to ask the second question * facepalms *
      And also is there a way to fix the wire from the outside so I don't risk destroying my headphones?

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 8 lety

      +xenomorph101AJ
      1: there are multiple causes for the earbud to quit. The most common is the wire breaking inside the rubber coating. The speakers inside the earbud are also very delicate and can quit over time. Sometimes a build up of ear wax seeps into the earbud and kills the speaker too.
      2: I'm sure if you are determined, you could fix it outside the casing but, i wouldn't recommend it. Chances are the repair won't be as durable and won't last. I say if you're going to do it, do it right. Shortcut repairs lead to sort lived repairs. It's really not that hard but if you're not comfortable, don't attempt it.
      Hope this helps

      +kez3000 also, did the entire unit stop working or just an earbud? If it's the whole unit, is probably not a speaker or wire problem.

      +BigChi61 I hate to refer to any set procedure as "required"in the world of DIY. If you choose to, you could just repair the wire. I would recommend you replace the whole earbud for a few reasons. It's easier, it's a more reliable repair and you get the opportunity to install better earbuds. I show you the entire replacement in my video for the hbs 700/730 and how to use regular store bought buds.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 7 lety

      +nate7621 you can't buy them specifically for any of the lg tone series. You need to buy regular plug in earbuds and cut the wires to length. I show this in my hbs 700/730 video.

    • @nate7621
      @nate7621 Před 7 lety

      Ah so what about the whole magnetic part of it or is that in the video

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 7 lety

      +nate7621 yes, you can pull the magnets out of the old earbuds or you can buy small rare earth magnets and glue them on. I use earbuds with a flat back and i glue on flat round magnets. You just need to stick the magnet in the earpiece cup first to know what side to glue to the earbud. Otherwise they might repel instead of attract.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 9 lety

      First, I would check the +/-wires that connect the mic to the board for a loose connection.
      If that fails, I would replace the mic. You can pull a mic from a cheap set of earbuds that have a mic along the wire.
      Please keep me posted with your results and let me know if I can help further.

    My charging piece inside my headphones started moving, I opened them up and I guess they got unsoldered some how, and it is just shacking around inside my headphones? If I soldered the charging piece back on will that make it work again or is it something a little more complicated.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 8 lety

      You have to look at it under magnification. Soldering it back on should fix it but you have to make sure not to bridge any pins that weren't already bridged. Since its only used for power and not data, it's not too complicated.

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 9 lety

      In my experience the hbs750 wasn't designed to be as loud as the earlier models. Unfortunately, if there is a way to increase the audio output, I haven't discovered it yet. I personally went back to using an hbs700. The audio is much louder and there's a lot more room to fit a larger battery.

    One of the earbuds is making a buzzing sound Is it fixable or is it permanently broken?

    • @kez3000
      @kez3000  Před 7 lety

      +OYSABANDIT !!!!!! Fixable or not? That kind of depends on what is causing it to make the buzzing sound. You need to determine if it's the earbud going bad or a problem in the circuit board. The method I like to use to check the earbud functionality is to buy a very cheap set of plain earbuds, cut them to expose the wires, add solder to the wires, touch the wires to the speaker +/- contacts on the circuit board while the earpiece is streaming music and listen for sound. If I hear the music with the test earbud, I'll know it's an earbud problem.
