Salming was taking in 1st and 2nd All-Star year after year in a time when the European players were hated. As demonstrated here, Salming was an amazing and underrated talent.
What's with all the negative comments on Lapointe? He was a fantastic defenseman and clutch playoff performer, and I say that as a Leaf fan. Salming was great too though.
Absolute classic. I loved these showdowns and this era in the NHL in particular. I even had a Lapointe Montreal "away" jersey just like the one Guy is wearing, complete with his number on the back and on my upper sleeves. THIS from a kid in Buffalo.
So appropriate to have this in my feed when we just had Börje honoured by the Leafs and then losing him to that terrible disease. I was a huge fan of the Habs at this time but also really liked seeing Salming play and be a great player and a trailblazer for all European players who followed him.
To anyone saying that todays hockey players are more skilled or talented, first of all take a look at the equipment these players had to wear. Look at the skates that Salming wore and compare them to the hyper light and super comfortable skates of today. Also, when it came to the goalies, their pads were both smaller and weighed a ton compared to the ones of today and they also didn't have the skates of today that supports a convenient butterfly style of movement, the goalies back then didn't have much choice than to play stand-up style with that kind of primitive equipment, and they were also generally smaller than today. Add to that the fact that the hockey culture back then when it came to training and keeping yourself in shape physically was completely different than todays standards. With todays possibilities most of the players from older eras would be just as good today as they were back then.
I think that it evened out. The sticks and skates weren't as good, but they had more net to shoot at with the small goalie equipment. There were a few big goalies then. Ken Dryden and John Davidson were both well over six feet.
Where is the theme music? It seems to me these Showdown segments had some funky / odd theme music at the start of them. I also recall they only did this for two years: Showdown 78 & Showdown 79.
I actually like the white helmet/blue jersey combo Salming is wearing, it goes well with the stripe on the sleeves. The reverse, blue helmet with whit jersey and blue sleeve would be cool too
I thought that I remembered Salming winning this. Lapoint came close on the breakaways though. Always liked watching showdown in the intermissions on HNIC. 😀
Some would later call Borje Slaming "Bore-ya Solid" but considering he was playing during the Harold Ballard era, team morale affected everyone's performance.
Does anyone remember when Showdown was on NBC Network in between periods of their televised Hockey games in 1974? But it was a far different format than what you're seeing on this video. And Each Attacker got paid extra money for each goal scored, or the Goaltender got paid for each save made.
Even though I hate the Habs, I still think that Guy Lapointe did an excellent job in this Showdown considering that he was clearly mismatched by Toronto's Finest(At the time) in Borje Salming.
Lapointe was not mismatched"... @ all... i sense bias on the part of the commentator, who made such a comment".... lapointe was awesome just like salmimg was!... i give the edge thou to lapointe, when it comes to shooting thou".... ...
Watching these old shows, would the stars of yesterday be such prolific scorers with the bigger goalies, bigger equipment and current butterfly style? IMO, probably not.
"Butterfly" goslies of the 1970s era through the 1990s were few and far between for a good reason - they got smoked. 'Butterfly' is used today because of the ridiculous size of the equipment, as a result goaltender is a dime a dozen position. Name a goalie who goes far in the playoffs year after year. There used to be lots of them. Brodeur, Hasek, Belfour, Smith, Roy, Dryden, Cheevers, etc.
Would todays stars be so great being held hooked slashed speared elbowed ....viciously targeted with cheap intent- to-injure shots that were regular tactics in an opponents arsenal up to the 2000's. Todays stars have it orders of magnitude easier with neutered defence they easily skate around or draw a penalty with a light tap of a stick. They have no clue how tough it used to be. Along with heavy slow equipment and poor ice, very few could achieve as they do today
Salming was just plain super! Guy Lapointe was past his prime at the time of this Showdown. I only wonder how Salming would have fared against Guy LaFleur, Steve Shutt, Serge Savard or Larry Robinson.
D BA Who are they? You were asking for Different Goaltenders from either Toronto or Montreal. At the time(1978), Mike Palmateer was Toronto’s Regular Goalie. They put Philadelphia Flyers Goaltender Wayne Stephenson on net as a Neutral. Now, imagine if they were to have Rogie Vachon on net instead from the Los Angeles Kings.
@@Jiltedin2007 well stephenson wasnt for maybe a year or two a No 1 goalie hence my mcrae and Larocque comment...rem Bernie Parent well he was injured during this and they chose Stephenson his flyer replacement for some reason
D BA 1979, Bernie Parent suffered An Eye Injury that permanently put him Out of Hockey. This Showdown was in 1978. Was he also injured during that time? The reason why I brought up Rogie Vachon because he was An Ex-Hab who got traded to Los Angeles because he couldn’t deal with the fact that the Canadiens made Ken Dryden their #1 Goaltender when they got him in 1971.
O.K. Leafs Fan, you had your laugh. But this was clearly a mismatch! How do you think Borje Salming would have fared against Guy LaFleur or Larry Robinson?
It was defensemen vs. defensemen competition. So, LaFleur wouldn't have been in against Salming. Robinson could have been it though. That was the finals, so not sure who was beat in previous rounds.
Maybe I'm old school but I wish the goalies wouldn't cover the whole goal by just standing there. Smaller pads and work for it but who am I, NHL wants the goalies to shine I guess. It would impress me more if they succeeded with normal sized gear and show their real goalie skills.
I don't think that they could go back to that old equipment with the much harder shots today (due to carbon fibre sticks). But they could have narrower pads without risking injury to the goalies. Plus the catching glove is way too big now.
Fan det är nu jag ångrar att jag inte kollat på Sport Vilken Fantastisk person Börje Salming måste ha vart.. Försöker titta ifatt alla klipp på honom Han måste vart ett Unikum förstår jag som inte fattar sport alls
No problem kid. If you never watch sport you will have an awesome time now when you are catching up what our Börje Salming did on the ice. But he was great guy outside the rink too. I guess all of our swedish guys that have played in NHL have tried to be Börje on the ice. NHL have had a lot of great swedes through the years, some of them also was captains for the teams (something that Börje regret that he sad no thanks when they asked him to be captain in Maple Leafs). So we got so many great players because of Börje, he opened the door to NHL for Swedes and other European players. He was a warrior to the end. RIP Börje, we will never forget all great memories that you made.
It’s amazing how the game has changed. I remember watching these guys back in the day. This looks like beer league level. Can you imagine these guys up against a guy like McDavid. They would think he’s Superman.
Not true. He was quite agile but also stalky and physical, so he could play both a skilled or physical game. He was able to skate the puck out of danger or make the perfect pass to exit the defensive zone. His outstanding point shot and offensive numbers were but a bonus. He's in the Hockey Hall of Fame and for good reason.
He's a Canadian hockey icon. I learned a lot watching Howie Meeker's Hockey School as a kid. And he replaced Bob Goldham as colour commentator on HNIC, who was as dull as Howie was animated.
Put it between the pipes when it counted. As a defenceman, he could move it out of his end and start an attack better and more frequently than anyone else in the league of his era, including Orr and Robinson, which is why Leaf fans love him so much. Even if they weren't winning, Salming was a joy to watch.
As a kid, I loved watching Peter Puck and Show-Down. ;-)
Now that’s what I call a happy childhood memory. 🙂
Salming was taking in 1st and 2nd All-Star year after year in a time when the European players were hated. As demonstrated here, Salming was an amazing and underrated talent.

Borje took shot from way back, where dumbbell was 4 ft closer...Borje is KING !
LOL. typical response from a miserable Leaf fan.
"dumbbell"? Is that necessary? He was a great player.
Salming...Was a trailblazing and courageous Giant in his time...RIP #21
Salming and Sittler are my all time favorites
loved show down and Peter Puck 👍❤️..nowadays sadly only people talking about hockey in intermissions
This beats the boring 2nd intermissions today.

@@Grimenoughtomaketherobotcry That's true for durability. But not for shooting hard. That's why not one NHL player uses a wooden stick.
I would love to see Bobby Orr in this competition. That would be something.

Those Leaf jerseys were the best !
I loved Showdown, this brought me right back! Growing up in the 70’s was awesome! 🏒🇨🇦

I've checked it's about $28k today so doubt that.
You know the average salary in nhl is 3M /yr? That is 8,2k / day inclusive the days they don’t work. Don’t think they bother about 28k tbh.

Börje Salmings garage.

Nice one. Salming rules.
I'm betting on Borje

Just look how far they are when target shooting 🎯.
I love hearing Howie's voice again... sigh
