- In this video we get a BMW X3 come in running poorly and blowing lots of smoke. The customer suspected a lack of fuel but we determined it was a fault on the air side. Take a look at how we diagnosed this with a logical process using knowledge and some scan data.

Hey, Thanks Rob. Got the same issue on my X5 E70 3.0d. You've helped immensely. Thank you so much for posting this video.👌
Great explanation through live data Rob. Thanks buddy.
Cheers Jeremy, much appreciated!
Blow the cobs (spider webs) out! Love it.
Reminds me of our Mexican neighbor lady who spoke somewhat broken English. Her way to describe being cold or having the willies was to say she had “bumps like a chicken”. The American English version is “having goosebumps”. Sometimes getting lost in translation is more fun than the original expression!!
Great job as always and thanks for sharing.
Hhaha love the odd terminology!
Great video! Thanks!
Spot on mate. Great Diag.
Legend, thanks Dan!
Well done Rob.
Cheers again Lambros!
Superb👍
When I saw the BMW, I was super excited, they're always a challenge to fix😉
Thanks for sharing Bro, Stay Safe👍
I hope it didn't disappoint then Salman, thank you again!
@@romanosautomotive Not at all😉
Absolutely awesome 👌 video
Awudu thank you again!
Good diag and repair mate! 😉😉👍👍
Thank you Max my man!!
I've been through similar vacuum issues with my E60 5 Series, no smoke but the DPF got destroyed. I replaced the EGR solenoid and the vacuum lines and then the replacement solenoid (OEM) died after less than 12 months.
Luckily it's an easy fix if you know what you're doing.
One problem I've found with the M57s on these is that the display doesn't let you know there is a DPF fault until it gets the 2nd level of exhaust backpressure, by which time running a manual regen can be almost impossible.
They really should have programmed the display to come up with an alert at the 1st backpressure, so you have time to take it to a shop and have it checked with a scan tool. The engine won't run a regen if the engine isn't up to temperature or the EGR isn't operating properly (There's no temperature gauge either, which is stupid).
It's made worse by the fact that the thermostats (both of them) in these break ALL THE TIME.
love the bmw diesel engines :D fixing a lot of them here. well done man. sometimes these solenoids make funny grunt noises
Haha is this your main vehicle to work on there Johann?
@@romanosautomotive yes man, 80% Diesel M47/57 , N47/57, B47/57 engines
Anyone close to Nottingham? need mine looking at too
Great job 👍
Cheers Shaun and thanks for watching!
I dunno Rob, shouldn't you always take customer advice 😂. Great diag and run through mate.
Haha I do my best to ignore them! Thanks Kirk!
needing glow plugs helped bite the bullet on manifold removal
I too was surprised by the vacuum numbers after the fix
Thanks Denis, makes it hard when we don't have to original specs to go against so there's always a surprise or two!
I felt rob by watching this video. Where are all verification checks (power, ground, Picoscope test, vacuum pump tester). 😂. Good video legend, diagnose based on symptoms and not codes.
Haha DJ you know me too well. I have all the scope stuff ready in the background ;)
@@romanosautomotive i know how you do.lol. keep up the good work my brother
Oh a real question this time….. I see a lot of vacuum controls on your Diesel engines. Wonder why they are designed that way instead of having electronic actuators? In the states even gasoline engine cars don’t hardly have vacuum controls. Seems to be an extra complication to add a vacuum pump.
Who knows what these manufacturers want and do these days! It's lucky dip if they get an electronic or a vacuum controller haha
Hello guys, so I've been having trouble with my e60 525d recently. I've noticed that when i accelarate above 3k rpm I always leave a black cloud of smoke. I have already checked and cleaned maf sensor, changed air filter. The diagnostic doesnt show any errors apart from 4530 which is something to do with underboost. Could that be the problem? or is it fuel injectors ext.? Any ideas are helpful
Hi, did you get yours fixed?
@@romanosautomotive hi, yes I had all 6 injector tested turns out 2 of them were coming too an end so I changed them and that did it for me
Awesome news, thanks for letting me know!
Hello sir, I have the same symptoms on my car, the car have rough idle, my injections nr 1 was bad. I changed it and everything injections on he car is good now. I checked it with Ista+. I have still rough idle, I have no other code coming up when I check with ista+ or other scanning tool, so I don’t know what can be.. Did you car get any code for that thing you changed so you know it could be that ?
I have e60 530d with m57 same engine as yours car. Thanks for any answer.
There was no code for that particular item. It is the diagnostic process that leads you there.
@@romanosautomotive thanks for answering. I see on my car the boost/MAP sensor is deleted. It no longer there, I don’t know why but I buy the car like that. Cloud it be that the problem ? I was thinking change the pcv/ccv maybe it will help.
What's new , BMW troubles every day .
haha not wrong!
just delete the EGR crap
