      What I came to say. I heated up 180g of sugar and water, poured Into a rubber flask. About 7-8 gels, cost under a dollar. Worked great for a monster ride yesterday.

    I like my carbs in my water. Maltodextrine and fructose plus cittic acid and sodium chloride is the way I save a ton. I mixed 1:0.8 maltodextrine: fructose like SIS Beta Fuel.

      You should look into the new research and studies on maltodextrin (not glucose). Not as good as you may think. I use a combination of table sugar (sucrose = 50% fructose and 50% glucose) and dextrose (glucose). I buy the dextrose from bulk barn and it is really quite reasonable. 20% off on Sundays if you bring your own container.
      There is also research out that explains how the ratio of fructose to glucose changes as carb intake is increased and duration of exercise is extended.

    1kg of sugar dissolved in hot water made up to 1 litre. Leave in fridge then decant into your bottles for the amount you need that week. 40ml = 40g carbs, 100ml = 100g carbs, depending on the intensity of the session. Costs £1

    I tried this out, using the maple-vanilla example. It's not bad! Surprisingly satisfying. It's like a firm chunk of rice pudding, so it would transport well.
    Funny thing: I hate the idea of using plastic baggies, but think nothing of the packaging material that the pre-made products come in. I may figure something out with wax paper or something.

    I used to make flap jack, just oats, honey, peanut butter for a basic one then usually add chopped dates and pumkin seeds. Pack down into a baking tin and bake at 180 for about 12 minutes. Because these are slower release carbs, and higher fiber, they're great for longer rides. I now don't even bother with those and do all my rides fasted, even race fasted sometimes, you can't get much cheaper than that!

    nothing like trying to eat one while breathing slightly too hard. inhaling rice on a ride is not fun, but this and FeedZone Portables are perfect for Z2 rides where that's not an issue.

    Or just buy "brandless" bags of the right carbs, and mix them... or just eat cheap candy. Why make it hard if it's actually really easy?
    Btw, i've noticed that milka brownies don't upset my stomach somehow. Good for zone 2 rides. Also cheaper and tastefull, already packed seperately, right amount of kcals, easy to eat while breathing heavy.
