- A TV theme song that became a big hit. From a two season running sitcom 'Angie' came this wonderful pop gem 'Different Worlds' by Maureen McGovern. There is something magical about this recording: whether it is the building octaves, the percussive and disco driven production or the powerful vocal s of its performer, despite its two minute fifteen seconds duration, every note of it is enjoyable. I fell in love with it on first listen and ran out to buy the 7" single and it has been a treasured gem ever since.
'Different Worlds' spent two weeks atop the Adult Contemporary Chart in September of 1979. The single peaked at #18 on the Billboard chart. After achieving a run of successful movie theme songs in the 1970's, Maureen focused on stage work but continued to record albums of traditional pop and musical genre works.
For me, Maureen McGovern will always be the voice from Blockbuster 70's movie songs: 'Poseidon Adventure' (Morning After), 'Towering Inferno' (We May Never Love Like This Again) and 'Superman (Can you read my mind). A trilogy of sublime vocal performances from an exemplary singer. - Jak na to + styl
In my own prejudice opinion, if you weren't a teen during the late 70's, you missed out!🥳
I was...born in 66.
Me too! 👍🏼
Yes, it was great
As a bass player who still longs for the grooves of the 70's, I simply cannot get enough of this particular song. Everything, about this production, is magical.
I GET SICK OF IDIOTS WHO HATE DISCO.....THIS IS SUPERB...DB
this bassline is everything:-)
I dig the key changes... simply wonderful music production, a great song from my post-college days. :)
I totally agree!! Love this song!!
Charles Fox is the man!
Perfectly crafted pop song from the late 70’s and one of the best TV themes of all time
fully agree, Thomas. :)
Played this in an 80s wedding band. Still love hearing it. Excellent song.
Haven't heard that since probably 1979 - wow, what a gem!!! Brings you right back to those times!
Number 1 on A/C and Number 18 on the Billboard Top 40 - definitely a hit ! Most definitely my favourite Maureen McGovern song!
Number 1 on Adult Contemporary..Love this.
I love it also!!! It is so refreshing to hear and enjoy wonderful music such as this!!!
Rest In Peace Doris Roberts and
Debra Lee Scott...She lost a fiancee in the 9/11 attacks...So sad.
Why would anyone give this song a thumb down?
Hi Frank, i have people giving my clips a thumbs down within seconds of posting even before they've got through the duration of it! . If i had Meryl Streep singing the phone book they would give it a thumbs down or the best singers on the planet. People be nasty!
"We give to each other our different worlds"
A dazzling song thats very heart wrenching for someone to hear after youth is gone away.
Tis song makes me feel sad because love hurts very much.
This a top ten favorite of mine, as you just might imagine. The sentiment is of sunny, warm, happy days, even years later.
What a beautiful voice.
Entered Billboard July 7, 1979 ..reached #18
YEAH! Those were the years! I remember tuning in to this on the radio in my VW Beetle back in the day. The 70's rock, no doubt about it. I also counted five key changes toward the end, VERY cool! Thank you for this nice post! :)
+74bshs Sorry for my slow reply. Thank you for your words. Cheers. :)

Let the time flow
Let the love grow
Let the rain shower
Let the rose flower
Love it seeks, and Love it finds, Love it conquers, Love it binds
We come to each other from different worlds
Drawn to each other by the love inside of us
We give to each other our different worlds
Long as we can do it, life is gonna breeze right through it
Let the time flow
Let the love grow
Let the rain shower
Let the rose flower
Love it seeks, and Love it finds, Love it conquers, Love it binds
We reach for each other from different worlds
With love for each other that will stand the test of time
We're up to the challenge of different worlds
With this love inside us, there is nothing can divide us
Let the time flow
Let the love grow
Let the rain shower
Let the rose flower
Love it seeks, and Love it finds
Love it conquers, Love it binds
Love it seeks, and Love it finds--
(Love it seeks, and Love it finds, Love it conquers), Love it binds--
Love it seeks, and Love it finds, Love it conquers, Love it binds--

Maureen McGovern should've been the first band member of the group "Foreigner".
A cute song.
Great song.
Top of the charts in 1979? Ohhh...so that's why it speaks to me... I was BORN in 79! lol
She was singing to and about me! LMAO.. ;)
I was that new love for mhy parents! He he he
Cute. Very cute! :)
I was born in 1979 too, but in Brazil, here only 'The morning after' became known because of the film.
I was born in 76 I absolutely love this song! 70’s music is some feel good music.
RIP Doris Roberts...
+Mark Malcomb Indeed, Mark. 'Angie' was my introduction to the force of nature that was Doris Roberts.
RIP Debralee Scott
On this day in 1979 {September 4th} Maureen McGovern performed "Different Worlds" on the nationally syndicated weekday-afternoon television program, 'The Mike Douglas Show'...
At the time "Different Worlds" was in it's first of two weeks at #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, and three weeks later it would peak at #18 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart...
It reached #1 on the Canadian RPM Adult Tracks chart...
Between 1973 and 1981 the Youngstown, Ohio native had eleven records on the Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, three made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, the above "Different Worlds"...
Besides "Different Worlds", her two other Top 10 records were "The Morning After" {#6 in 1973} and "Can You Read My Mind" {#5 in 1978}...
Maureen Therese McGovern celebrated her 70th birthday two months ago on July 27th, 2019...
In middle of august this year, when I was listen 'The morning after', I thought about searching about her, if she was still active in present days, singing... And became glad she is and fell in love, impossible to run away from her and her songs! Now, my dream`s to see her in person, who knows one day...
00:11 this would have worked great as the opening to a commercial jingle in the late 70s, perhaps for Kodak film or maybe even for a perfume or wine.
Well, it was the opening theme song of the 79 ABC sitcom “Angie”. 😂
I vaguely remember the premise, she was a waitress at a diner and he was a doctor with a snobby mom and Doris Roberts to contend with as a blue collar in-law hence the "different worlds". My older sisters were fans of the show they remembered Donna Pescow from Saturday Night Fever (they liked her eyes). Then I believe she went on to star in a daytime soap as one of the first highly publicized lesbian characters and my sisters were like, "Wow!" I totally forgot about the show's catchy theme (I was too preoccupied with that "Star Wars" thing...)
Finished listening right now and loved, it`s already safe on my playlist!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
R.I.P.: Debra Lee Scott
Jiltedin2007 I didn't know she passed! She was funny.
Composer Charles Fox, with lyricist Norman Gimbel, wrote this theme for Angie-- as well as themes for Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Wonder Woman, Paper Chase & Love Boat (lyric by Paul Williams)-- all between 1974 and 1979.
I like this song, but good lord... Which part is the chorus? Is this a verse? Was that the bridge?
LOL! Good point. It really sounds like the TV theme song that it is. And parts could also work as a commercial jingle. But as a traditional pop song, it is, as you indicate, all over the place. ;)
I think that's what makes it exciting. All the key AND tempo changes. Certainly the writers Fox & Gimbel know how to do a more traditional song. They wrote "Killing Me Softly" for Roberta Flack and "Ready to Take A Chance Again" for Barry Manilow as well as Jim Croce's "I Got A Name".
I don't know why people say this song topped the charts. From my research, it peaked at number 18 on Billboard. I guess there are all kinds of charts out there. This seems like a decent hit, but not a chart topper.
It topped the Adult Contemporary Chart. September, 1979
It is a brilliant song.....on the note of it being a tv theme, it is just perfect! Sadly Angie did not last...I was far too little to really remember it in full, I have a fuzzy memory and I do remember it being on, and it was popular for a small bit of time......just a major shame that this show could not make it! Critics say the two leads married too soon.....then again it could have worked had the public gave it a chance and not to mention, I heard the show moved nights, when that is done, usually the network makes a poor choice, because that is second guessing and the show should have stayed in the slot where ABC had it in the first place
I couldn't agree more, Eric - this show was a charming show, with a very good cast; I liked seeing the clash of cultures on the show, and I thought of Angie and Brad as friends of mine.
From what I understand, the series is expected to be released on DVD sometime next year - and I want to obtain one for myself.
