Why hasn't Apollo made a "words are hard" t shirt lol
because words are hard
For all future video's: It is "Prinkipes" in classical Latin. In general the Latin grapheme ⟨c⟩ is the Latin phone [k], which is always pronounced hard as k in sky, never soft as in cellar, cello, or social. ⟨k⟩ is a letter coming from Greek, but seldom written as such and generally replaced by c. Triarii for example would be pronounced with 3 times the same i-sound of ea in easy. Not Triari-eye.
Awesome info. Had no idea that k was a "greek" letter.
However no one is really 100% sure about this? And the language has been used / changed over 1000+ years. In the beginning no one even wrote down much spelling rules. So it doesn't really matter how you pronounce it because I can be correct ? Does this makes sense?
@@rubenheymans1988 yeah, I think it makes sense. I think most of the "correct" pronunciation of dead languages derives from the pronunciation of the child languages. For instance: "CH" in Italian always has a "K" sound. It's not irrational to argue that a "C" in Latin would sound like a "CH" in Italian, since Italian basically derived fully from Latin.
@@rubenheymans1988 Of course 100% sure no one will ever be, but there is a lot of evidence that suggests it was actually spoken as I summed up, amongst probably the elite, since there were many dialects as well. After extensive research a consensus has been reached among historians and classici that this is the most likely way it was/is pronouced and so is also taught to students when reading and speaking classical Latin. So there is a general rulebook, since many things are derivable (Isolated communities and dialects for example give good indication, like on Sicily they speak Italian with pronounciation much closer to classical Latin). Check out the Netflix series Barbarians. The classical Latin there is excellent.
@@tigervv6437 well yeah the 1000 + dialects too, my point is however you want to pronounce Latin isn't it always correct possibly? Or is that just ignorant thinking, im not into languages

Good job playing with the romans; the easy way to know if you use well Rome faction, is when the numbers of kills you make is bigger than a hundred kills, no matter how cheap or expensive are the roman units you used, because they have one of the best armys in game.
Beautiful battle! Really found myself learning new tactics with this content, its made rome 2 even more enjoyable. Good stuff man

I am so glad you explained your chooses during this battle as a new player to Rome 2 and having very little experience with Total War games in general thank so much Apollo
Awesome to see Epirus doing work. I think its rare to see somebody use them so well.
This has been one of the better videos you have out out Apollo. This was more informative and entertaining by far!
That was a clean battle. Good stuff Apollo.. love ya
Best game for siege battles gotta say, and Apollo playing rome as he said in stream he did pretty good too.
This was very entertaining, great commentary!
I noticed a few things about the defenders that might have contributed to Apollo doing so well: Carthage is a new player (he was mostly using fire ammo), Seleucid played passive against Arverni (which led to him being crushed), Sparta didnt help his allies until about 1/3 of the way through the battle, and Macedon got double teamed.
I think Sparta was trying to avoid getting doubled early because the Selucid passivity allowed two faction to hot multiple Spartan forces.
I remember seeing this battle live, was really great.
”the p boys“ 🤣🤣🤣🤣
The hastati that routed at 10:00 were ordered by their officer to run along the walls as punishment haha, 13:20 and theyre still running along it
My firat total war game i got today i was inspired to get it because of you. Thank you its awesome. It may not be rome 2 but i the first rome but its still fun!
I do like how, this, is how the Romans actually did things.
Hastati run in, get stuck in with Gusto, do damage, absorb the ammo, all that stuff.
Then the Principes smash in and carry the day against the tired and already battered enemies
Apollo: Words are hard
Also Apollo: doing commentary
Good vid man
Well u can take one siege engine and go straight for the centre or capture point instead of fighting head on and it got some advantage doing so like they can have flank opportunity, cavalry infiltration and bringing enemy attention
Apollo doesn't state he's the greatest, but his followers do. He gives credit to his teammates. Plus a lot of videos of TW, show players losing with Rome. This was a cool video of basic use with the faction, and how to keep the initiative in tactics
Apollo will you make this a series?
i would like that
So happy he added a higher definition for his videos
Ngl this battle was pretty cool, it was pretty fair because u have barbarians and rome which is great at attacking and the defenders are also good factions like sparta etc
Goodjob apollo i love all of your videos
I really enjoyed this siege for some reason. Couldn't take my eyes off it the whole time!
I am but a humble subscriber knight and have been loyal to you for years my lord and it is my honest opinion that you should be more popular than you are keep up the great content!
What a coincidence that you play rome 2 total because I just finished installing it
I was waiting for a siege battle where Apollo controlls the attacking force. My prayers have been heard!
I really liked how you commanded your hastati centuries.
Looking at the thumbnail, all I could think of was that moment in the siege of carthage cinematic trailer:
Take those walls!
AHHH-
MATN studied classics and says prinkipes. Honestly, everyone knows who you're talking about. I wouldn't worry about it to much. Great video!
It was great
I totally enjoyed it
Crushing victory. With a huge reserve remaining too. That's how you attack!
New to the channel and total war. Love your videos keep it up. To answer your question about how to pronounce "Principes", the Romans pronounced the letter "C" as the letter "K" is pronounced in modern English.
Yes a new vid!
I like how actually play them as if your are a general on the battle field
I'm not sure if you mentioned this, but simply standing your Hastati near an enemy unit will have them firing their pila without the need to micro-manage charge orders.
Fakes right, goes left and charge straight into the wall. Job well done cav 😆
Btw you don’t have to charge to make infantry throw their projectiles, just put them near your enemies, turn on fire at will, they will automatically throw.
Few ideas that popped into my head while watching this video!
Be good if you could merge units mid battle.
Would make for some interesting gameplay if you could betray and turn on allies mid battle! Especially in campaign.
I also want to be able to sling in dead bodies and stuff into a settlement to make the enemies sick, like you sling dead cows in Stronghold, haha!
Uhhhh......no
@@novaalkronthe1st910 Any particular reason?
@@sirofsirs390 turning on the allies would not be a good idea... it would be utter chaos... everyone turning on everyone and it wouldn’t even be a battle... the merging units is an idea though although it would have to be the same units and the dead bodies would work in theory, but it’s just wrong (I know they did that in history but that’s just not a good tactic for a active attack.. because it would hurt your own men) those are my reasons... I hope they help
@@novaalkronthe1st910 Such turnings in battles are historically accurate and battle is chaos, my friend
another great video
its actually weird because even when I first began playing, I always loved being the Selucid Dynasty or Macedonia! I honestly don't like being rome! Selucids have an intensely varied force. My favourite is the Horse Cataphracts. Anyways great video Good job Apollo!
I'd have to disagree. Yes Rome doesn't have the best cavalry unit in the game but it has two very good spear units, Triarii and Auxiliaries, some of the best archers, and that classic medium to heavy infantry that stack bodies like cord wood.
While I do see the appeal of Macedonia and the other Greeks, Rome is where it's at to me
@@Darqshadow fair enough as long as you are enjoying your time with them.
should do a how to defeat kush as rome vid. great siege btw!
When you have watched so many Apollo videos “Words are hard” slips into your common vocabulary...
On the principes question. Both pronunciations can work. The hark k-like sound is probably closer to classical Latin used in the period. The soft c would be vulgar Latin (mediaeval). Classicists will also pronounce Cicero like "Kikero," or Tacitus "Takitus" for the same reason.
The "P boys" skksks the best definition kskksks
31:46 that lone soldier is a baddazz
one thing he could do is manage the units in pairs, while one is fighting the other is resting, throwing tired troops against fresh ones takes a toll
Hi, nice video!
Auxilia did all the work :) I'm kidding. Great siege!!!
charge the thorax swords with switched off formation attack, put on shield wall after engaging and they will beat the legionaries easily
Life of a soldier
Life of a soldier! YES!
more videos with Rome please!:)
32:32 “Pluto, back to formation!”
You could just move the hastatis back into the siege towers and move to the opening that's right beside it...
Hey Apollo! How do you turn off fog of war when watching replays?
Finally a good Roman player
very nice attack!!!!
You don‘t have to charge to throw the javelins. Just Put the Unit infront of the the Enemy Lines and use fire at will
its so wholesome whenever romans and barbarians team up
If push troops to go around the flank is that like bugging? I think its a must when attacking in siege but allot of defenders complain about it. But then also they just hold the line with 1 hoplite unit and dont support
Yeahhhhh🔥
When Sparta is in you side:This is Sparta. But,if on enemy side: meh! Sparta.
I was at the stream the Hastati is easily the MVP
After WH3 disappointment this feels like cure.
@@callumander4141 I like fantasy titles yet feeling everything turning into MOBA is not fun.
yo apollo, love your vids man! i'd love to send you a rome 2 siege replay. How do i send it to you?
the pronunciation of principes varies based on how you pronounce your latin in general, the sound of C in latin has changed throughout the years-- if you go by classical latin then it's always a hard c (this even applies to ch which is always pronounced like the ch in chemistry in classical latin), but in ecclesiastical latin it's quite different! basically, your pronunciation of it as "prinkipes" is the correct way to say it in classical latin i think
Would love a Witcher 3 play-through, I’m sure everyone would agree considering season 2 of the tv show is out soon.
How do u make it so u can use Sparta with other factions like Rome or Egypt
You the best. Also a chad.
Would the club levy strategy work with hastati?
we need another life of a soldier, I used to love those vids back in the day
Thank you Apollo not everyone knows how to attack with rome
"THIS IS HOW YOU ATTACK WITH ROME" literally 1 minute later "I screwed up and cut off half of my Hastati." Me: OKEY DOKEY.
:D Precisely.
HI i have a question, when i have melee troops with Pila's, i dont do the attack and stop attacking thing, i either disable the melee only attacking button so its a fire at button (you can do this by sellecting the troops with at least 1 range unit and then clicking on the attack button to change between mellee and range attack), or i just form them up with fire at will on, which will make them stand still, aim and then fire. why do people attack then where you run at the enemies? does this give an accuracy bonus?
the bits between (this) is cause melee troops cant swap between range and melee, UNLESS you do what i said there.
i also noticed there were no double phalanxes, where you form up 2 units into eachother to double the attack and defense capabilities, i always do this with hoplites and pikes, the hoplites will absorb halve the range attacks and all of the mellee attacks, getting maybe 20 kills in a whole battle while the pikemen get hundreds of them. or is this just not done cause its kinda a dickmove? (note i never used any phalanx factions in online so i have never ruined any1's day with this :)
Great massive siege battle but i would have loved to have been in control of Sparta defending as without sounding too arrogant I would have created some serious kill zones where the outer walls had been knocked down creating huge breaches that need to be plugged and imo what better faction to use than Sparta to plug those gaps which would have caused a huge delay to entering the city and in some cases kept the tower defence either in dispute or on the side defence. How i would have done this - Square formations which would force entering troops to be funnelled towards my lines if pikes. Slingers with there range set further behind to pepper any nme troops who were actually on the walls from the siege engines etc. I know its easy after watching battle like this and hearsay say my defence would have worked much better and been successful but based on my experience with Sparta and examples of how to use square formations combined with pikes on my own channel i feel confident imo I would have produced some great defence footage that would have reminded myself and many others of a combination of the film 300 defending the hot gates and also the newly knighted men from the film kingdom of heaven where they defended the wall breach in the city of Jerusalem. Anyway I still loved this epic battle and maybe Pixel if you ever want me to put my money where my mouth is you could message me and perhaps give me an opportunity to be a lucky a player who could appear in one of your videos in the future. In the meantime thank you for great upload and footage. I look forward to watching some more of your latest videos soon.
Hey Apollo, con you bring back some Medieval Kindoms 1212 videos, please?
In classical latin the c is always pronounced with a k sound. So its prinkipes.
which game version is this for RTW 2? I can see many different version on steam..
Principe is pronounce with an S, the principal infantry. or should it be typical?
to me, you are the greatest Rome 2 player.
I know tis is gonna sound impatient but i wanna see another Greek campaign playthrough. Plz pixie make another soon🥳🥳
Tbh the very beginning when your fighting hoplites you don't need to charge into throw pila. You can set up infront of them and throw which is a lot faster than charging in multiple times over. Also bringing cav as rome isn't the play since there cav is bad and will lose to almost any other unit in the game. Infintry is the way
