I never saw Bagpuss as a child. I first saw it at the age of 21 - an adult watching a children's show, with no nostalgia from my own childhood. I still thought it was awesome! Just goes to show that, well, Bagpuss is awesome!
i'm a 44 year old cynical atheistic liberal financial journalist... but i can't watch bagpuss without crying....it has that effect on me...more than anything else...postgate was a genius.
I believe it was called the Sumer Canon... "Sumer is Icumin in..." It actually was the earliest discovered written piece of music that included the word "fart," or "uerteþ" in middle English.
Just fabulous. Great fun but educational at the same time. What a pity that children in the 21st century are only subjected to violent, aggressive and (usually) American rubbish. Bring this, and all the other classic 1970s children’s programmes back and let’s return to civility and pleasantness again.
The mice are singing to the tune of an old English medieval round called 'Sumer is icumen in.' It dates back to around 1250. You can hear the song here czcams.com/video/B2Tk1JseYkU/video.html&ab_channel=ChiaraFoti

Never watched many of Oliver Postgate's stuff while I was a child. I'm only 27, so I was Thundercats and He-man. I remember bits of the clangers. He devoted his entire life to the happiness of children. He was a great writer and a paitient and humble film-maker. He had such talent and a great wit. I've only just begun watching his films. But I already miss him.
II am rewatching all of them to cheer me up. As an adult, I see a different side of the Stories. Inclusion, cooperation, etc..... I saw a documentary about Oliver he made so many wonderful Children's Progrannes, another favourate of mine was Ivor the Engine, I attribute my dragon fascination to that lol.

Damn, you're 38 now
I've just heard it for the first time in my life and this tune gives me the shivers. Lovely.
The tune is the from the very ancient English song "Sumer is Icumen In". (trans "Summer is a-comin' in")
squeaky tears all round - memories of not wanting to go to playgroup for the afternoon come flooding back

I used to love this. Takes me back to the mid 70s.
To the tune of "Summer Is a Coming In" one of the oldest songs of the English language.
Even older than 'Greensleeves' I believe

Roommate pointed out that the tune is similar to the Middle English folk song ‘Sumer is Icumen In’.

It was a ship in a bottle.
Just here to say that the cleaning song uses the same tune as Summer is icumen in, the song that's used at the end of The Wicker Man.

Who's watching in 2024? Cos I am! 🐀🐀❤️
most kids tv didn't - even in the 90s. Its only like 1999 when kids TV started to get crappy. E.G pingu, fireman sam, postman pat etc/
Someone should make a phat remix of this tune.
I swear I watched 90s shows more than 2000s
Makes me want to do the washing up.
